TORNADO
Tornadoes are known as one of the most damaging disasters. What is the definition of tornadoes?
A tornado is a very powerful column of winds which spirals around a center of low atmospheric
pressure. A tornado will look like a large black funnel which hangs down from a storm cloud.
The name "tornado" derives from the Latin "tonare". It means "to thunder." While the Spanish
developed the word into "tornear" which means "to turn or twist". This is why a tornado is
sometimes called twister or cyclone. The winds inside a twister can spin around at speeds up to
500 miles an hour, but it usually travels at roughly 300 miles an hour. This speed twisting makes
a tornado the most dangerous storm. The average tornado has a diameter of about 200 to 300
yards. The smaller tornadoes are known as satellite tornadoes. These small off spring, about 50
yards across, can be very fierce and do lots of damage.
The forming of a tornado can be very quick. Sometimes it can form in a minute or less. A
tornado can travel across the ground at high speeds, then it can suddenly vanish. Most tornadoes
last less than twenty minutes and travel less than 15 miles. However, the super storms sometimes
travel over 100 miles before they are exhausted.

It was a very hot day. Everybody was suffering from the heat. Everybody was very thirsty and it
was hard to find water. The river and the spring were dry. It was a very hot summer.
A tired lion was walking weakly. He walked everywhere to find water. “If I cannot find water
soon, I’m going to die,” the lion thought.
Not far from the lion, there was a goat. He was thirsty, too. As they walked, they came to a small
fountain. How happy they were! “Hey, stay away from my fountain!” snapped the lion. “Your
fountain? It’s mine!” the goat snapped back. “I got here first!” said the lion. “No! It was I who
got here first,” replied the goat. They began to fight over the fountain.
Finally, they got tired of fighting. So, they took a rest. When they looked up, they saw a flock of
vultures above them. “Hey, do you see the vultures?” asked the lion. “Yes, I think they are
waiting to see who is going to die. What do you think?” said the goat. “Let’s stop this fight.
We’d better make friends,” said the lion. “It’s much better to make friends than to make an
enemy,” replied the goat. Then, they drank from the same fountain.

Sung-Yow has a secret. He could paint a picture and make it come alive! This only happened
when the painting was finished. Sung-Yow loved to paint dragons. He left out their eyes because
he didn’t want them to come alive. In this way his secret stayed a secret.
The king heard that Sung-Yow was good at painting dragons. He asked Sung-Yow to paint four
dragons on a wall. In three days the painting was almost finished. The dragons looked like they
could jump off the wall. They didn’t jump because Sung-Yow had left out their eyes.
“If I dotted the eyes, the dragons would fly away,” said Sung-Yow.
Everyone laughed. No one believed him. Sung-Yow was not happy. This time he would NOT
leave out the eyes. He painted little black dots on two of the dragons.
Crash! Crack! the wall split open. Two dragons jumped off the wall. Sung-Yow went on to
become a very famous artist with a very famous secret.
In China when someone adds a finishing touch to a work, people might say “Draw Dragon Dot
Eyes”.

Long time ago, in the kingdom of king Aaron, Abu Nawas was invited to the king’s dinner. He
went to the palace in his best clothes. A servant welcomed him and showed Abu Nawas to his
seat. Then, all ministers came and sat on their chairs. The last person entering the room was the
king. He sat on his special big seat.
On each plate, there was delicious roast chicken. Its smell made people hungry. After praying,
the king invited all people to eat. Abu Nawas took his fork and knife. He wanted to cut his
chicken. Suddenly the king stopped him, ‘Wait Abu!’.‘Whatever you do to your chicken, I will
do that to you too,’ said the king.‘For example, if you cut the chicken’s wing, I will also cut your
arm.’ The king said.
Abu Nawas looked sad and disappointed. But it was not long. Soon his face looked very bright.
Suddenly, he pinched the chicken’s wing. The king was surprised. He didn’t think Abu would do
that. But he could not deny what he had said. So he pinched Abu arm.
Next, Abu patted the chicken’s back. The king also patted Abu’s back. All ministers wanted to
laugh, but they didn’t dare. They just looked down their plates. After some time, He patted Abu’s
shoulders.
‘All right Abu, you eat you chicken now!’ said the king while grinning.‘Thank you Your
Majesty,’ said Abu happily. ‘You are able to escape from my punishment,’ said King Aaron with
his mouth full of food.
At that time, the king looked amused. He felt satisfied with Abu. Some ministers smiled and
laughed a little. Abu didn’t really care about it. He enjoyed the roasted chicken very much.
There were more food and laughter during the rest of the party. All were very much happy….
I lifted my wet woolen gloves up to my damp eyelashes and wiped the delicate snowflakes from
my eyes. I could not feel my nose and my breath was like icicles forming in the air. I was cold. I
was fed up! I wanted to go home. Mum and dad had forced me and my 2 sisters - Jenny and
Mary to go for a Sunday afternoon walk in the park. I could see my footprints in the snowy path.
Like a trail of breadcrumbs in the forest showing me the way home.
I stopped and listened to the magic around me. I could hear the wind howling like a stray dog
hungry for a yummy bone. The branches of the trees that used to whisper and rustle had become
bare, brown bones and the grass was covered with a white sparkling blanket. Then I saw a filmy
web shimmer and glimmer beneath a pale sun. My breath was like silky soft smoke wafting up
into the freezing cold air.
Suddenly there was mum with a big cup of liquid heaven. She handed it to me with an enormous
smile on her face. Here you are Jo, this will keep you warm"
I slowly sipped the delicious liquid and felt it dripping and slipping down into my tummy like
lava flowing down a mountainside. My wet woolen gloves were no longer frozen but warm. My
breath had thawed and I was no longer fed up or cold. I was happy and contented.

Lightning is an electrical discharge that occurs in a thunderstorm. It can be seen in the form of a
bright streak (or bolt) from the sky. Lightning occurs when an electrical charge is built up within
a cloud, due to static electricity generated by supercooled water droplets colliding with ice
crystals near the freezing level. When a large enough charge is built up, a large discharge will
occur and can be seen as lightning.
The temperature of a lightning bolt can be five times hotter than the surface of the sun. Although
the lightning is extremely hot, the duration is short and 90% of striken victims survive. Contrary
to the popular idea that lightning does not strike twice in the same spot, some people have been
struck by lightning over three times, and skyscrapers like the Empire State Building have been
struck numerous times in the same storm. The loud bang that is heard is the super heated air
around the lightning bolt expanding at the speed of sound. Because sound travels slower than
light the flash is seen before the bang, although both occur at the same moment.

Tobacco is a member of the nightshade family. There are more than 70 species of tobacco. Two
cultivated species, common tobacco and wild tobacco, are annuals-they live only one growing
season. Common tobacco is 1 to 3 m tall and has a thick wooden stem with few side branches. A
plant typically produces 10 to 20 broad leaves that branch alternately from the central stalk. The
leaf size depends on the strain. The narrow, trumpet-shaped flowers are dark pink to off-white.
Wild tobacco is about 0.6 m tall and has a stem that is more slender and less woody than
common tobacco. The leaves have a short stalk that attaches to the stem. The flowers are pale
yellow with five separate lobes.
Tobacco grows in tropical and temperature regions. It thrives best in areas with a frost-free
growing season of 120 to 170 days, depending on the type of tobacco. Good-quality tobacco
requires fertile, well-drained, moist soil and warm temperatures. Most types of tobacco are
grown in full sun. Environmental factors influence the plant’s characteristics. Soil, for example,
can affect leaf size, texture and color. Sandy soils tend to produce a relatively large leaf that is
light in color and body, fine in texture, and burns with a weak aroma. Heavier soils, which
contain silt and clay, tend to produce a small, dark leaf with a heavy body and strong aroma
when burned.
Tobacco contains nicotine, an addictive drug. Tobacco smoke also contains more than 4000
chemical compounds, including at least 43 cancer-causing compounds. Forms of tobacco that are
smoked cigarettes, pipes and cigars cause lung cancer, emphysema and other respiratory
diseases. Smoking also contributes to coronary heart disease and in pregnant women who smoke,
low birth weight of newborns. Chewing tobacco and inhaling snuff causes cancer of the mouth,
nose and throat and can lead to nicotine addiction.

Once upon a time, SunanKalijaga planned to visit SunanMuria in Pati, Central Java. He asked his

As a child Habibie liked swimming, reading, singing, riding his father's racehorses, and building
model airplanes. In 1950, when Rudy was 13, his father suffered a heart attack and died. Suharto,
then a young military officer billeted across the street, was present at his father's deathbed and
became Habibie's protector and substitute father. Habibie later wrote of Suharto: "I regarded him
as an idol, who could serve as an example for all people … a young, taciturn brigade
commander, with great humane feelings, and a fierce fighting spirit." Suharto's autobiography
said Habibie "regards me as his own parent. He always asks for my guidance and takes down
notes on philosophy."
After graduating with a doctoral degree from the Aachen Institute in 1965, Habibie joined the
aircraft manufacturing firm Messerschmitt-Boelkow-Bluhm, rising to the rank of vice-president.
As a research scientist and aeronautical engineer, he helped design several planes, including the
DO-31, an innovative vertical takeoff and landing craft. He specialized in solutions for aircraft
cracking, gaining the nickname "Mr. Crack" as one of the first scientists to calculate the
dynamics of random crack propagation. He also became involved in international aircraft
marketing activities and NATO's defense and economic development.
