A SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of 60 minutes period, the student will be able to:
1. Define what is linear equation in two variables.
2. Relate linear equation in daily living in terms of problem solving.
3. Solve and graph linear equation using two variables.
II. SUBJECT MATTER
Topic: Solving linear equation in two variables
Materials: Pictures, PPP Presentation, Laptop and visual aid
Reference: Math Center 2009
III. PROCEDURE
Preliminaries ( prayer, greetings, checking of attendance and classroom
management and rules)
A. ACTIVITY
In 25 students in a class, count 1 to 5 and go to your group according to your
number.
Direction: Write YES if each equation below is a linear equation in two variables,
otherwise, NO. Write your answer on the space provided.
1. 3 x−11 y=7
2. 5 x 2+ 4 y=6
3. x−19 y =−9
1
4. +8 √ y=10
x
5. y−2 x−15=0
B. ANALYSIS
 For the number 1. 3 x−11 y=7 , is it a linear equation in two variables?
 How about the number 2. 5 x 2+ 4 y=6, is it a linear equation in two variables?
 How about the number 3. x−19 y =−9, is it a linear equation in two variables?
1
 How about number 4. +8 √ y=10, is it a linear equation in two variables?
x
 And lastly, number 5. y−2 x−15=0 , is a linear equation in two variables?
C. ABSTRACTION
A linear equation in two variables (x&y) has the standard form Ax+By=c where
A,B, and C are real numbers, and A and B are not equal to zero.
For example:
1. 2x+y=2
2. 4x+7y=8
3. X=5-y

Things to remember in identifying linear equation in two variables:

 It has two variables

 There is NO more than one variable in each term.
 The exponent of the variable in each term is 1 (or the degree of the equation is
1).
 There is NO variable in the denominator.
 There is NO variable inside radical sign.

 Generally, it is written in the form, Ax+By=C.

How to solve and graph linear equation in two variables?

Example1.

3x-2y=6

STEP1. Find set of ordered pairs.

x -2 0 2
y

If x=2, then

3x-2y=6 GIVEN

3(-2)-2y=6 SUBSTITUION
-6-(-2y)=6 SIMPLIFIED

-6+6-(-2y)=6+6 ADDITION PROPERTY OF EQUALITY

1 −1 MULTIPLICATION PROPERTY OF EQUALITY

(- ¿-2y=12( ¿
2 2
SIMPLIFIED
Y=-6

Thus the ordered pair is (-2,-6)

How about if x=0? Solve for the ordered pair?

Then, solve for the last ordered pair wherein X=2.

STEP 2: Plot the ordered pair in the Cartesian plane.

STEP 3: Connect the points.

Example2.

4x+y=-1

If y=0

4x+y=-1 GIVEN

4x+0=-1 SUBSTITUTION

4x=-1 SIMPLIFIED

1 1
( ¿ 4 x =−1( ) MULTIPLICATION PROPERTY OF EQUATION
4 4

−1 SIMPLIFIED
. x=

Thus, the ordered pair is ( , 0 ¿.

D. APPLICATION
Try to solve the given word problem related to linear equation.
1. Dessa had already walked 5kms. And continue walking 3kms per hour. Write the
equation that shows the relation between the distance and the time. After 10
hours, how far does Dessa walked?
Solution:
Let
x be the time (hours)
y be the distance (km)

y=3x+5
y=3(10) + 5
y=35 kms
E. EVALUATION
Construct a table values for x and y that satisfy the equation, and draw the graph
of the equation.
For x, use the following values:
1. -1
2. 0
3. 1
F. ASSIGNMENT
Graph each of the following equations. Use graphing paper.
1. 2x-y=4
2. 2x+y=1
3. 2y-x=6
4. X-3y=6
5. 2y-3y=4
