Academic professionals, also known as academia, are individuals who work in the field of
education and research. They may hold positions such as professors, researchers, or instructors at
colleges, universities, or other institutions of higher learning. The academic profession differs
from other professions in a number of ways.
One key difference is the focus on research and scholarship. Academics are expected to not only
teach, but also engage in ongoing research and contribute to the development of new knowledge
in their field. This may involve conducting experiments, analyzing data, writing papers, and
presenting findings at conferences. In contrast, professionals in other fields may not have the
same emphasis on research and may focus more on practical skills and application of existing
knowledge.
Another difference is the structure of the work environment. Academia is typically organized
into departments or schools, with professors holding rank based on their experience and
achievements. There may also be a hierarchical structure in terms of rank and status, with full
professors at the top and junior faculty at the bottom. In contrast, other professions may have a
flatter organizational structure, with all employees having more equal status and opportunities
for advancement.
Academics also have a unique culture and way of life. Many academic professionals work on a
tenure track, which means they are evaluated for their teaching and research abilities and may be
granted lifetime employment after a certain number of years. This can provide a high level of job
security, but it also requires a significant time commitment and may involve a heavy workload.
In addition, academics may be expected to participate in committees, attend conferences, and
engage in other service activities as part of their job duties.
Overall, the academic profession is a rewarding and challenging field that requires a strong
dedication to research and education. It offers the opportunity to contribute to the advancement
of knowledge and make a lasting impact on the world, but it also comes with unique demands
and expectations.

4. Higher education institutions across the globe are increasingly pressed to find ways of
proving their worth not only in the academic preparation of students, but also in how their
preparations are linked to business and industry. Discuss the actions that need to be taken
by your university in addressing this issue.
