Relation and Function

The document discusses relations and functions. It defines a relation as a set of ordered pairs and identifies the domain and range. Relations can be represented through ordered pairs, tables, mappings, and graphs. Functions are a special type of relation where each element in the domain is paired with exactly one element in the range. The document provides examples of one-to-one, one-to-many, and many-to-one relations and functions. It asks the reader to identify the type of relation based on given ordered pairs.

ILLUSTRATING

RELATIONS AND
FUNCTION
Miss Jemymah P. Beltran
Objectives:

1. Illustrate a relation and a function; and

2. Verify if a given relation is a function or not given an equation; and

3. Determine if a given relation is a function given a graph, using

vertical line test.
RELATION
- is a set of ordered pairs.
{(1, 1), (2,3), (3, 5), (4, 7), (5, 9)}

- the set of all domain first coordinates is the domain (x), of the
relation. The set of all second coordinates is the range (y) of the
relation.

Domain (x): {1, 2, 3, 4, 5} Input

Range (y): {1, 3, 5, 7, 9} Output
REPRESENTATIONS OF RELATIONS
Aside from ordered pair, a RELATION can also be represented in
three(3) differrent ways:
Ex: {(1, 1), (2,3), (3, 5), (4, 7), (5, 9)}

with exactly one element from as second set, called the range.
