Si Kabayan's father - in - law owned a large mango tree. It had been a good season and there was
a good crop of fruit on the tree. He had picked ed most of the fruit on the lower branches and
sold it in the market. .However , there was still a lot of fruit on the higher branches . It had to be
picked and taken to the market . There was a lot of work to do . Si Kabayan's father-in-law said to
him, "Kabayan, will you help me pick the fruit from my mango tree? It is nearly ripe and I must
get it to market."
“What will you give me if I help you? " asked Si Kabayan.
“Out of every ten mangoes you pick , you can have one for yourself . If you pick a lot of
mangoes, you will get a lot for yourself . You can sell them in the market and get some money for
yourself,” Si Kabayan agreed to help his father-in-law.
Together they went to the tree. They had some bamboo baskets to put the fruit in. When they
got there his father-in-law said, "Kabayan, you are younger than I am. You can climb more easily .
You can pick the fruit on those branches near the top of the tree . '
Si Kabayan worked quite hard . Very soon he had picked three baskets of fruit . There were not
very many left . He could see only one more branch with a lot of fruit on it . He climbed on to the
branch and began picking the fruit . As he was working he began to dream about the money he
was going to get .
