    Remember, we use the verb be + adjective to describe people. Can you remember the verb be in the Present
    Simple?

    Hair & Eye Colour


    In English, we use the verb have to describe a person’s features. Can you remember the verb have in the
    Present Simple?

    Adjectives go before nouns in English.


    I have brown hair
    and brown eyes.
    subject + have/has + adjective + noun

    She has brown hair.

    Remember, we don’t use articles with parts of the body in English.

    Grammatical Considerations

    Notice the word order:


    I have long,
    straight, black
    hair with a fringe. length + type + colour

    I have long straight black hair.

    Remember…
    • The word hair is uncountable.
    I have a long hair. X I have long hairs. X I have long hair. ü

    • The words fringe, beard, bob, and moustache are all singular countable nouns, so you need to use ‘a’.
    I have fringe. X I have a fringe. ü
    • The word bald is an adjective that describes the person, so we use the verb be and no article.
    I have bald. X I am bald. ü

    Exercise 2: Age Race / Ethnicity

    Match the vocabulary to the age ranges.

    Exercise 6: Writing & Speaking

    1. Write descriptions of three people you know. They can be friends, family or famous people. Include
    information about race, age, height, weight/body shape, hair and eye colour, hair length and type, etc.
    2. Work in small groups, and describe the three people you have chosen to your partners. Try not to look
    at your text.
    3. Take turns to describe the people in exercise 3 again, this time including information about race, age,
    hair and eye colour, hair length and type, etc.
