IET Wiring Regulations 18th Edition BS 7671:2018

1st January 2019 saw the IET Wiring Regulations 18th Edition
BS 7671:2018 coming into force.

The Regulation applies to installations designed after 31st

December 2018, and the enforcement date applies to
designing of both new installations and alterations and
additions to existing installations.

Surge Protection & Residual Current Devices
Section 443 and Regulation 411.3.3, 411.3.4

Regulation 411.3.4 requires RCD additional protection for all AC final circuits
supplying luminaires in domestic (household) premises.
Protection is available with RCBO and RCCB devices.
Section 443.4 requires protection against transient overvoltages in areas such as
co-located buildings, commercial or industrial activity, public services (hospitals, bus
stations) and cultural heritage.
That said, SPDs can be justified in virtually all residential applications because the
combined cost of equipment at risk will far outweigh the cost of additional protection.

Compliant solutions from the Easy9 range:

• RCBO devices provides protection of short-circuits,
cable from overloads and persons from electric shocks
by direct contact.
• RCCB devices provides tripping in case of leakage current only
• Surge Protection Device and kit protects against
transient overvoltage and lightning strikes.
Fire Resistant Supports
Regulation 521.10.202 (previously Regulation 521.11.201)

The 18th Edition brings a significant change to this regulation,

as wiring systems are required to be supported throughout an
installation, such that they will not be liable to premature collapse
in the event of a fire.
There are no applications excluded – trunking, conduit and
cabling fixed to surfaces of the building or attached to cable
support systems must all have fire-resisting supports in place.
Whilst not every fixing must be metal, the installer must ensure
that there is an adequate number in place.

Compliant solutions:
• Metallic twin & earth cable clips • Fire safety clips for use within trunking

• Stainless steel cable retention band • Stainless steel conduit saddles

& anchor to secure cables within • Masonry screws to secure metallic
compartment trunking, ladder & basket fixings to walls & surfaces

• P clips & saddles for use with soft

skin cables.
