Structured Cat

This document defines key terms related to structured cabling and data communication. It explains ethernet specifications such as 10GBASE-T, 100BASE-TIEEE, 1000BASE-T IEEE, 1000BASE-LX IEEE, and 1000BASE-SX IEEE. It lists five cable installation guidelines and discusses what network planning entails, network connectivity determinants, the four fundamental network design goals of scalability, redundancy, resilience and security, and the stages of network capacity planning.

DEPARTMENT OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

UNIT CODE: DIT 2207 UNIT TITLE: STRUCURED CABLING AND DATA COMMUNICATION

NAME: LEWIS KYALO WAMBUA REG NO : DIT/2021/85375

a) Define the following terms as used in structured cabling

i. Structured cabling----complete system of cabling and hardware which provides a
comprehensive telecommunications infrastructure
ii. Network design ---the practice of planning and designing a communication
network
iii. Network documentation--=the practice of maintaining records about networks of
computers
iv. Backbone cabling---cabling that delivers interconnection between entrance
facilities, equipment rooms and telecommunication rooms
b) Briefly explain the following ethernet specifications

10GBASE-T IEEE 1---is a group of computer networking technologies for

transmitting Ethernet frames at a rate of 10 gigabits per second.

100BASE-TIEEE---is an enhanced form of Ethernet 10BASE-T and a network

standard used for fast data transfer rates up to 100 Mbps.

1000BASE-T IEEE--- 1000BASE-T (also known as IEEE 802.3ab) is a standard for Gigabit
Ethernet over copper wiring.
1000BASE-LX IEEE--- is a type of standard for implementing Gigabit Ethernet
networks.

1000BASE-SX IEEE----  an optical fiber Gigabit Ethernet standard for operation over
multi-mode fiber using a 770 to 860 nanometer, near infrared (NIR) light
wavelength.
c) List any five cable installation guidelines
 Cable should be pre-cut and hung suspended for 48 hours
 Cable should be installed with, not against, its natural set
 Strain relief on either end will reduce conductor breakage at the flex points
 If cables of varying diameters are being installed, utilize interior shelving or separators
 Ensure every cable has room to move freely during movement of the cable carrier
d) Explain what network planning entails
 Network planning is an iterative process, composed of topological design, network-
synthesis, and network-realization
 The main aim is to ensure that a new telecommunications network or service mees
the needs of the subscriber and operator.
e) Explain the network connectivity determinants
 Network centralizer
 Location
 Data transfer technology
 Network technology and terminal device
 Several operators provide a free speed test for their customers
f) Discuss the four fundamental network design goals
 Scalability: the ability of a network to grow and handle increased traffic
 Redundancy: having multiple paths for data to travel and backup systems in place in
case of failure
 Resilience: able to withstand failures and unexpected outages without coming to a
complete standstill
 Security: security is always a top concern when it comes to network
g) Discuss network capacity planning stages
 Measure current utilization and identify problems
 Customize capacity threshold metrics
 Estimate future capacity requirements
 Plan future network capacity needs
 SolarWinds network performance monitor
