Translating and Working with Projects Chapter 3 When you create a new project, you will be presented with an untitled project that contains two windows. The upper window will contain the source text. The lower window initially contains a copy of the source text. As you translate your project, the text in the lower window will be replaced by the translated text.
Opening Projects
There are three quick ways to begin working with an L&H project: Create a new project file and type your text directly into L&H Power Translator Pro (or paste it from the Windows clipboard) Use L&H Power Translator Pro to open a word processor file (which creates a new unnamed project)
Open a Previously Saved MTP Project. Once you have created the new project, you can type the source text you wish to translate in the upper pane of the project window. Or, you can paste text directly from the Windows clipboard. A copy of the text will appear in the lower pane of the project window. The text in the bottom pane will be replaced by the target text when you have translated the file.

new project. You are NOT directly editing or changing your original word processor file. L&H Power Translator Pro retains the format from your original file. You may not see all of the formatting from the original file, but once you have completed and saved the translation, you will be able to open the translated file in your word processor and see the original formatting. To import a word processor file, follow these steps: 1. 2. Select Open from the File menu. The Open window will appear. To open your word processor file, you must first specify the file type in the List Files of Type box. Click on the down arrow on the right-hand side of the List Files of Type dropdown box to display the file formats supported by L&H Power Translator Pro. Select the appropriate file type in the list by clicking on it with your mouse. Once you have selected the file type, locate your file as you normally would and click on OK. Since L&H Power Translator Pro needs to know the source and target languages for this new project, the Select a Source/Target Language Pair dialog box will appear. Select the appropriate pair and click on Open. A copy of your word processor file will appear in an untitled project window.
3. 4.
Or, after selecting the correct Source/Target Language Pair, click on the Automatically translate document checkbox to create the new project and immediately begin translation. Remember, what you see on your screen is not your original document. What you see on your upper screen is a copy that uses to create the translation. What you will see on the lower half of the screen is the translation that you can save in a word processor file.
Note: If you change the original text in L&H Power Translator Pro, and you want it to replace the original in your word processor file, you will need to save the source text with the same name and extension as the original word processor file. See Saving a Project File for more information.
Text (TXT) If your word processor is not among those listed, you can save your files as *.RTF or *.TXT files, and then import them. You can also copy your text to the Windows clipboard and paste it directly into a blank L&H Power Translator Pro project. Refer to your word processor's manual for specific instructions on saving a file in a different format. 8 L&H Power Translator Pro
For example, when you translate from English to another language, English is the Source and the other language is the Target.
To select a Source/Target Language Pair, follow these steps: Click a Source/Target language pair from the Source/Target Language Pair list box. Click OK.
When translating, L&H Power Translator Pro attempts to select the most likely translation each time it encounters a word that can have multiple meanings. The selections may not always be the best for your document but can be changed by using the Alternate Translations feature. To translate your document, use one of two commands in the Translate menu: Document - Translates the entire document. Sentence - Translates a selected sentence.
Translating a Document
Once you have open text in front of you, you are ready to translate a document. To translate a document, select Document from the Translate menu or click on the Translate Document button on the toolbar.

You may want to save the project file if you have not finished translating all sentences and would like to exit the program. To save a project file: Pull down the File menu and click on Save to save a project using its current name/location.
Save As
The Save As command allows you to save the current project with a new name, resulting in two projects, or one new project if you have not saved before. Notice: The program will automatically assign the extension .MTP (Machine Translation Project) to your new file, even if you choose another extension. 3. Click on OK. The .MTP file will be saved with the new name you have provided.
Note: All projects saved from within L&H Power Translator Pro have a default file extension of .MTP. Do not try to save your document as a .DOC file from the Save or Save As options.
To change your print layout, follow these steps: 1. Click on Print Mode in the File menu. Notice: A sub-menu will appear listing three printing options: Source, Translation, or Line by Line. 2. Choose one of the print options, described below: Source - Prints the source (original) text, located in the top half of the screen. Translation - Prints target (translated) text, located in the bottom half of the screen. Line By Line - Prints each sentence with its translation, line-by-line. The translated sentence will be printed below its original counterpart.
Chapter 3 Translating and Working With Projects 4. Type the word (headword) you wish to add beside the yellow square icon .

2.
Note: Unknown words are automatically treated as nouns during the translation process. Unknown capitalized words are treated as proper nouns. Therefore, to achieve the best possible translations, it is imperative to add unknown words to the dictionaries.
For information on adding words to dictionaries, see Dictionary Editing.
Review your writing before translating. If you review your writing for spelling, punctuation and grammar, you will have better results when translating the text. It is a good idea to attach the original text to your translated text. This gives the recipient a reference for the tone and content of the original text. Use the main application for translation. While L&H Translation Utility gives you quick translations, typing or copy/pasting your original text into L&H Power Translator Pro allows for post-editing translations. Translating in the main application allows selection of more appropriate words after the translation.

Chapter 4 Improving Translation Quality 7. Write your documents in standard, formal English. In formal English, grammatical connections are clearly expressed: subjects agree with predicates, modifiers relate to what they modify. Unnecessary words are kept to a minimum. Clear, formal writing, which is easiest for the reader to understand, will result in the most comprehensible translations possible. Informal English is marked by loose grammatical style that is typical of a conversation. This may be perfectly appropriate for conversation. It is not beneficial for the translation process. If your text program includes a spell checker, use it prior to importing the document into L&H Power Translator Pro, which will not recognize words that are spelled incorrectly. Add the appropriate accents. Whenever possible, enter text with the correct diacritical marks. Some accent marks look very similar (i.e., and ); be sure to enter the proper one.
8.
9.
10. When entering text unfamiliar to you, be sure to type it as accurately as possible. Pay particular attention to spelling and punctuation.
NOTE FOR GERMAN: All German nouns are capitalized. Without proper capitalization, many German words will not be found in the dictionaries.
11. If you use a scanner and OCR software to capture text, we recommend that you use OCR software that recognizes accented characters such as , , and .
Note: If you translate text that does not contain accented or special characters but should, L&H Power Translator Pro will attempt to identify unknown words by adding accent variations. Although this will reduce the number of unknown words, it is less accurate than personally adding appropriate accents and special characters to the text to be translated.
Improving Translation Quality Chapter 4 character. If you continue to press Ctrl-Shift-A, you will cycle through all of the possible characters and eventually return to the base character. The base characters and the characters that can be created from them are shown in the Accent Cycle Table.
The first character is the base character. The characters that follow are those you create by pressing Ctrl-Shift-A after typing the base character.
Note: Num Lock must be on when typing ANSI decimal codes on the numeric keypad.

If you need to type an apostrophe or quotation marks and do not want the foreign character, press the ' (apostrophe) or " (quotation marks) and then press the space bar.
Chapter 4 Improving Translation Quality When translating automatically, the program will use the most common translation for each of the sub-nouns in the compound noun. Often, this will provide enough information for you to infer the translation for the entire compound noun. However, if automatic translation does not provide adequate information, you can obtain alternate translations by right-clicking on the each sub-noun in the compound noun, and selecting between alternate translations for each part of the compound noun, providing a more accurate translation. To illustrate, consider use of the German compound noun Steuerrecht (tax law) during an interactive German-English translation of the sentence Es gibt ein neues Steuerrecht (There is a new tax law). The German compound noun Steuerrecht contains two sub-nouns, Steuer (tax) and Recht (law). As the primary translation for Recht is right, an automatic translation would translate the compound noun as tax right. However, the Alternate Translation feature lets you select the more logical translation, law, for the German sub-noun Recht. After you retranslate the sentence, the correct translation will be used.
Improving Translation Quality Chapter 4 For example, the German noun Bademantel (bathrobe) becomes Bademntel in the plural. Assigning mantel as the inflection boundary ensures that the correct vowel will take the umlaut when the word is pluralized.
Note: If no prefix is found, the verb is treated as a regular verb, with the ge- prefix placed before the verb, with the following exceptions: 1. Verbs ending in -ieren 2. Verbs starting with: ver be ge ze e 3. All excepted verbs must have at least two syllables.
To change the default behavior, click on one of the radio buttons in the Past Participle Inflection portion of the Specify Inflections window. If the ge- prefix is being added to a verb that should not take it, click on the circle to the left of Suppress 'ge.' If the ge- prefix is not being added to a verb that needs it, click on the circle to the left of Force 'ge.'
