23 TOPIC-BASED MUSIC THEORY TESTS & 7 REVISION TESTS
HOW TO USE THESE TESTS
These thirty Grade One Music Theory Tests are designed to be useful for:
The book closely follows the ABRSM Grade One Music Theory Syllabus, although the rubric of the
questions may differ from the actual ABRSM exam.
Each test is contained on one photocopiable page. The answers to each test are conveniently located
on the next page.
Tests 1-23 should be completed in order – they cover each topic which is tested at Grade One, and
become progressively more difficult.
Revision tests 1-7 test a variety of topics and are based on real musical examples.
Care should be taken to write neatly and legibly. Answers should be written in pencil, and a ruler is
recommended for best results.
Please note that you are permitted to photocopy or print these tests/answers for your personal use
or to use with your own students. You are not permitted to sell, publish or otherwise publicly

TEST 6 ANSWERS ~ DOTTED NOTES AND TIES
1. Notes: Make sure the ties are curved the right way! The final Eb doesn’t need an accidental
because it’s still flattened by the first flat. (Did you notice it was bass clef?!)
2. Award 4 points for no mistakes. Lose 1 point if the G was “tied” to the G# or Gb. Lose 1 point if the
G was “tied” to the one in the next octave. Lose ½ a point for any tie written on the wrong side of
the notes.
4. a-true; b-false (it’s a staccato marking); c-false (it’s a slur, ties join notes of the same pitch); d-
false (see c); e-true (the accidental on the first D also affects the one it’s tied to)
