And we are here to present our topic entitled Project ServiCEability & ReSEAlience:
A Development of Multi-purpose Seawater Treatment Plant at Sto. Niño, Mabini,
Batangas
Faith:
Let's start with the basic description of our chosen community. Barangay Sto. Niño is
located in Mabini, Batangas. This community faces a significant challenge, which is
limited access to fresh water. There are two key factors contributing to this water
scarcity: population growth and the high elevation of the area. The community's
population growth, coupled with inefficient water use practices, has exacerbated the
problem, causing water scarcity to become a significant concern.
Our study indicates that the major contributing factor to water scarcity in Brgy. Sto. Niño
is the high elevation of the area. Due to its geographical location, the community
struggles to access a sufficient supply of fresh water. As the population grows, the
demand for water increases, further straining the already limited resources available.
To gain a deeper understanding of the water supply challenges faced by Brgy. Sto.
Niño, our group conducted comprehensive interviews within the community. The results
were consistent and undeniable—water supply emerged as a significant issue affecting
the daily lives and livelihoods of the residents.
STATEMENT OF NEED
To learn about the locals' complaints regarding their living conditions in the
barangay, we went from house to house and spoke with the residents and interviewed
them individually. This was administered to know more about the existing problems of
their barangay. We asked the issues and problems that the local citizens had
encountered or observed.
According to the residents of Brgy. Sto. Niño, Mabini, Batanagas some of their
problems are narrow roads, lack of Day Care Centers, slippery roads due to lack of
drainage system, insufficient street-lights and shortage of water supply. The
majority of the residents we have interviewed stated that the problem of lack of
streetlights and shortage of water supply are really their primary concerns. That is why
we agreed to focus on these issues given that water and electricity are one of the basic
needs a person should have.
In line with this, we came up with a way to design and build a Multi-purpose
Seawater Treatment Plant in the community of Brgy. Sto. Nino, Mabini Batangas. Since
this place is in need of potable water, this project is an opportunity to develop this
certain kind of plant. As an innovation, we agreed with an idea on putting a fuel cell that
generates electricity and digestate to utilize waste by converting it into fertilizers. In
terms of this we can also cater to the issue of electricity or lack of streetlights.
Here is Mr. Jayjay Gutierrez to tackle more about our innovation project.
Kyndra :
-For the innovation of the project, multi-purpose seawater treatment is a facility that
filters seawater by removing salts and pollutants, converting it to drinking water,
irrigation, and industrial usage.
-this project is also capable of producing biogas energy and digestate which can help
the barangay of Sto.Nino to have alternative sources of electricity and source of fertilizer
to improve their crops.
-To give you an overview about the structure of our project, the design is illustrated in
the slide.
-In the figure you can see that there is a water pump located near the seashore, it will
serve as the starting line of the procedure of this project. It gathers specific amount of
seawater then this collected seawater will undergo to the preliminary treatment, which
the first stage of filtration process,
Jj :
-Next will be the coagulation and flocculation process that will separate and remove the
suspended solids in the seawater. After separating and removing these solids, the
filtered water will go to the sedimentation basin which will enhance the filtration process
by removing unnecessary particulates. The collected particles will go to anaerobic
digestion and certain processes to produce biogas and digestate. And will be stored in
their respective cells.
-While the filtered water will go through to its final stage of filtration by passing through
filters with different pore sizes and different materials. Then, with the use of chlorine and
other chemicals that can kill parasites, viruses and bacteria the filtered water
will go to the process of desalination and disinfection . After that all distilled water will
be stored in the water storage tower which is connected to the houses of the residents
of Brgy. Sto.Nino.
Jobi:
- Based from the expected outcome of the project, we came up with the following
assessment:
- For the FUND, the Installation of a multi-purpose seawater treatment plant can be
costly, especially as it requires advanced technologies and infrastructure to effectively
treat and process seawater.
- For the LOCATION, the ideal location for the installation of a multi-purpose seawater
treatment plant would be in front of the Barangay Hall of Barangay Sto. Niño in Mabini,
Batangas.
For the future researchers who will have the same study as ours, we suggests the
following:
How will you distribute the collected biogas energy? In what way?how?
- By Localized Energy Distribution, it refers to the distribution of energy resources,
such as electricity or gas, within a specific local area or community. Instead of
relying solely on a centralized power grid or utility company for energy supply,
localized energy distribution focuses on decentralizing energy generation and
distribution to meet the energy needs of a smaller area. The biogas energy can
be provided locally near the seawater treatment plant. This could entail
developing a small-scale distribution network that delivers renewable energy to
residential, commercial, or industrial facilities.
-
How sure are you that this project will answer the problem of your chosen
community?
- As indicated in the statement of need, access to water is one of our primary
concerns, so offering potable water that comes from seawater will cater to the
needs of Barangay Sto Nino Mabini, Batangas.
What type of water treatment did you use in this SIP?
- Filtration, Coagulation and Flocculation, Sedimentation, Desalination and
Disinfection
What will be the source of energy to power up this plant/ to operate this plant?
- solar powered energy
Based on the data that you have collected, what is the relevance of this project
to the impact of technology in our society?
