    The Coventry Carol is a 16th century English Christmas carol that recounts the biblical story of the Massacre of the Innocents from the perspective of the mothers of the murdered infants. The summary consists of 3 lines: 1) The carol describes mothers lamenting how they can protect the "tiny child" from King Herod's decree to kill all newborn boys. 2) They mourn that Herod's men will slay their "children young" according to the King's commands. 3) The mothers sing a lullaby to comfort their infants but know they will never see them again because of Herod's deadly rage.
