FOR YOU TO ANSWER A PARTICULAR QUESTION, MAKE A REALISTIC

ASSUMPTION, MOTIVATE IT AND THEN ANSWER THE QUESTION.

QUESTION 1 RC AND RL CIRCUITS, PARALLEL AND SERIES PARALLEL

CIRCUITS

1.1 Match the following terminology in column A with the correct definition
in column B. Write the question number and corresponding answer, for
example 1.1.1 A if the correct answer is A for question 1.1.1. (5)
Terminology Definition
1.1.1 Impedance A. The angle between the source voltage and total
current in reactive circuits.
1.1.2 Admittance B. The range of frequencies that is considered to be
passed from the input to the output of the circuit.
1.1.3 Bandwidth C. The frequency at which the output voltage of the
filter is 70.7% of the maximum output voltage.
1.1.4 Cutoff frequency D. A measure of the ability of a reactive circuit to
permit current and it is the reciprocal of the
impedance measured in siemens.
1.1.5 Phase angle The total opposition of sinusoidal current expressed in
ohms.

1.2 State whether the following statements are true or false

1.2.1 Inductive reactance (XL) in RLC circuit causes the total current to lag
source voltage. (1)
1.2.2 Resonant frequency is the frequency at which the resonant condition
occurs in a series or parallel RLC circuit. (1)
1.2.3 For parallel resonance, the current is maximum and impedance is
minimum and ideally equal to zero. (1)

1.3 Figure 1 is a network of series-parallel resistors. If the voltage across

terminals AB is 12 V, calculate:

1.3.1 The circuit resistance (RT). (6)

3.1.2 Calculate the peak output voltage if the peak input voltage is 5 V. (2)

3.1.3 Calculate the average value of the output voltage of the rectifier if the

peak input voltage is 5 V. (2)
