PERFORMANCE TASK 3

Science 9
Quarter 4

Title: Investigating Energy Usage and Efficiency

Task Description: In this performance task, you will investigate the energy usage and
efficiency of various appliances and devices commonly found in households. Your
objective is to analyze their energy consumption, identify energy-saving opportunities,
and propose strategies for improving energy efficiency.

Task Steps:

1. Selection of Appliances:
a. Choose a set of appliances or devices commonly found in your households,
such as refrigerators, air conditioners, televisions, computers, or lighting fixtures.
b. Ensure that you have access to relevant information, such as power ratings or
wattage, for each selected appliance.
2. Data Collection:
a. Collect the necessary data for each appliance, including power ratings, usage
hours, and energy consumption over a specific period.
b. Use energy bills, manufacturer specifications, or energy monitoring devices to
gather accurate information.
3. Energy Consumption Analysis:
a. Calculate the energy consumption of each appliance using the formula: Energy
Consumption = Power Rating (in watts) x Usage Hours x Number of Days.
b. Organize the data in a table or spreadsheet for easy comparison and analysis.

Assessment Criteria:

Your performance will be assessed based on the following criteria:

 60% - Accurate data collection and calculations of energy consumption.

 40% - Clear analysis of energy efficiency and identification of energy-saving
 20% - Neatness of work/output
___________
100%

Note: The above task is a sample and can be adjusted according to your teacher's
guidelines and the specific topics covered in your Science 9 curriculum
PERFORMANCE TASK 2
Science 9
Quarter 4

Title: Building a Water Turbine to Power a Flashlight Bulb

Objective: To design and construct a water turbine that can generate enough electricity to power
a flashlight bulb.

Materials:

1. Plastic or metal container (e.g., plastic bottle or aluminum can)

2. Plastic spoons or small wooden sticks
3. Small DC motor
4. Flashlight bulb
5. Wires with alligator clips
6. Glue or tape
7. Water source (e.g., faucet or water tank)
8. Multimeter (optional)
9. Pen and paper for recording data

Procedure:

1. Prepare the container: Take a plastic bottle or aluminum can and remove the bottom to
create an open-ended cylinder.
2. Attach the spoons or sticks: Attach the plastic spoons or small wooden sticks vertically
along the inner circumference of the container. These will act as the turbine blades.
Space them evenly around the container.
3. Mount the DC motor: Attach the small DC motor to the open end of the container using
glue or tape. Ensure that the motor is securely fixed and aligned with the turbine blades.
4. Connect the wires: Connect one wire from the DC motor to the positive terminal of the
flashlight bulb and another wire from the negative terminal of the bulb to the negative
terminal of the DC motor. Use alligator clips to make the connections.
5. Test the turbine: Place the water turbine in a water source, such as a basin or sink.
Ensure that the turbine blades are submerged in the flowing water. The water flow
should cause the turbine to spin, generating electricity.
6. Check the bulb: Observe if the flashlight bulb lights up when the turbine is spinning. If it
doesn't light up, check the connections and ensure the turbine is spinning freely.
7. Measure voltage (optional): If you have a multimeter, you can measure the voltage
generated by the water turbine. Connect the multimeter to the terminals of the DC motor
and record the voltage reading.
8. Record data: Measure the time it takes for the turbine to generate enough electricity to
light up the bulb. You can also note the voltage generated and any other observations or
data you find relevant.
9. Analyze and interpret the results: Examine the data collected and analyze the
effectiveness of the water turbine in powering the flashlight bulb. Consider factors such
as the speed of the water flow, the design of the turbine blades, and the voltage
generated.
10. Conclusion: Summarize your findings and draw conclusions about the efficiency and
effectiveness of the water turbine in generating electricity to power a flashlight bulb.
Discuss any limitations or improvements that could be made to the design.

Note: Exercise caution when working with electricity and water. Ensure safety measures are
followed, such as using low-voltage DC motors and keeping electrical connections away from
water sources. Adult supervision is recommended.
