A few years ago, I was traveling on business. I arrived in the town where I was staying at midnight, and, finally, after
waiting for an hour, I found a taxi cab to take me to my hotel. T he man at the reception desk was very polite and spoke
a little English, so I was happy that I could communicate. T he receptionist asked me my name so many times, and, in
the end, I wrote it on a piece of paper. I was very tired and all I really wanted to do was sleep. And, after I checked in,
that is exactly what I did.
In the morning, I was thinking about the night before and something didn’t seem right. I went for breakfast and spoke
to the same man. “Can I ask you,” I said, “Is there a problem with my reservation? T his is the Hotel Astor, right?” All he
said was “No problem. Astor yes. No reservation, but no problem.” I went and had a delicious breakfast, and I had a
little time to prepare for my meeting, so I had coffee.
After an hour, I said, “Can you call for a taxi cab for me?” I was having a meeting in another hotel in town, called the
Pines Hotel. T hat was when I knew there was something very wrong. T he receptionist, after asking me to write down
the name of the hotel, just looked at me and said, “No. Sorry. No Pines Hotel here.”
It took a long time for me to understand what the problem was. I was in the wrong town! By an amazing coincidence,
there was a hotel with the same name as the one where I had a reservation. But my hotel and my meeting were 3 hours
away!

I’ve been in this job for two years. I was in my last job for one year. And the one before that was only for six months.
Each move has been a promotion, and I’ve gotten a raise. But have you noticed something? My rise up the corporate
ladder has slowed down. In the beginning, promotion comes quite quickly, but then you realize there are fewer jobs to
apply for.
For me, there was no question of applying for jobs in the same company. I’m too impatient and it would take years and
years for me to progress in one company. So, I’ve had to change companies several times and not exactly start at the
beginning but learn how different companies do business.
T hat teaches you a different set of skills, because you learn to be more flexible as you change the way you work. You
also get more knowledge of how different people work. T hat’s a great advantage, and it’s good to be curious about
different ways to run a business. As I have learned more, I have become more independent. Of course, the money and
all the benefits, like a company car and long vacations, keep me motivated.
But you lose things as well. I have moved to four different cities in five years. T hat means leaving friends behind and
finding a new place to live each time. I don’t know how long I will keep doing this. I imagine I will stop when I’m not
enjoying it any longer.
