FADE IN:
The majestic bird blinks and looks away. Its large wings open
and it flies away.
The sun fades over an African male, JOHN COWAYA and a female,
SABLE, both in their twenties, barely clothed and bound by
heavy chains. They appear to be runaways. Both of them stare
out at a large Native American assembly.
The spokesman of the chiefs and the one we saw in the swamps,
chief WILDCAT steps forward.
WILDCAT
(Mikisuki language)
To prevent anymore bloodshed, I and
the other elders have agreed to
return the runaways.
WILDCAT (CONT'D)
It is for the good of the land.
ORENDA (V.O.)
The land cries out against you
Wildcat!
2.
The crowd gaze at the skies -- the great horned owl descends
to the center of everyone. Before its feet touches the ground
it transforms into a Native American female, ORENDA, 24,
she's beautiful and heroic.
Some from the crowd ooh and ahh. Some even whisper the owl-
monster's name...
CROWD
STIKINI! STIKINI!
WILDCAT
Orenda?!
She stands before all with a owl feather head dress. She
wears a flannel garment, accented with feathers.
ORENDA
The great spirit has declared all
creatures are free. The runaways
are safe here.
(pause)
You will unleash a curse if you
send them back.
Wildcat places one hand on his chest proudly and points back
to the others.
WILDCAT
WE have convened on this matter.
ORENDA
It is not the will of the PEOPLE,
you know our customs! Greed has
blinded your vision.
(pause)
These people will bring war upon
us.
CLICK!
JACKSON
Enough with your Indian curses.
Good money has been paid for them
niggers.
(pause)
I got business to settle with them
slaves, ESPECIALLY that little
thief.
SABLE
(African accent)
It is you who are the thief!
ORENDA
(Mikisuki language)
A deal with the devil never turns
out the way you think.
JACKSON
Careful who you call devil. I'm not
the one using sorcery.
(pause)
I'm only here for my property.
ORENDA
THEY ARE FREE!
JACKSON
It's high time for someone to teach
you how to stay in a woman's place.
BANG!
ORENDA
You have committed a grave
injustice!
ORENDA (V.O.)
Cursed be upon you and your seed...
FOREVER!
The bird flies toward the swamps and the coyotes trail behind
her. The smaller coyote glances back at the amulet.
The battle between the tribe and the soldiers rages on.
DISSOLVE TO:
A muscular built white male whose arms are all sleeved up,
MOOSE, 23 stands in front of the door. On the steps, behind
him is another white male, pale and thin, LEVI CONNER, 18.
MOOSE
Quit being a pussy!
LEVI
Dude, my mom is going to pissed!
5.
MOOSE
BRO, you can't be serious right
now.
LEVI
She says they're of the devil.
MOOSE
Screw it, let's go!
LEVI
OK, OK. I'LL DO IT.
(points at Moose)
But just a small one.
Moose grins and wraps his arm around Levi's neck; ushering
him into the building.
Sable sees them come in. Yes, it's the same African woman
from the field, but she hasn't aged a bit. However, a
different energy surrounds her; mysterious and magical.
SABLE
(African accent)
GENTLEMEN, how may I be of
assistance..?
MOOSE
My homie here is getting his first
tatt.
SABLE
Have any idea what you want?
SABLE (CONT'D)
There is nothing we can't do. If
you can conjure it, we can make it
happen.
MOOSE
For god sake, just pick something!
MOOSE (CONT'D)
WHOA, who is that?
SABLE
The one and only Orenda Hok'ee. She
will be the one performing the
artwork.
ORENDA
Who am I doing tonight?
MOOSE
Ooh baby, do me, PLEASE!
Orenda steps to Moose. She grabs one of his massive arms and
shakes her head.
ORENDA
Messy... Amateurish.
(pause)
Looks like you're done.
SABLE
That's the one. It's his first
time. He hasn't chosen anything.
Orenda eyes shift back to the frail canvas. She reaches out
and grabs Levi's hand.
ORENDA
Ah, a virgin, I like those. Come, I
know just what you need.
MOOSE
You lucky dog!
Orenda leads Levi to a used barber's chair and sits him down.
She walks over to a small shelf and picks up a pottery bowl.
It's partially full of green swirling ink.
LEVI
What, what's that?
ORENDA
Only the best for you.
LEVI
Is that safe?
ORENDA
It is said that the chameleon is
the most cunning of animals.
ORENDA (CONT'D)
(whispers)
Relax.
ORENDA (CONT'D)
(Mikisuki language)
Ancient spirit fill this vessel
with your presence.
ORENDA
(back turned)
It is complete.
LEVI
That's bad ass.
(pause)
How much do I owe you?
ORENDA
(back still turned)
The first one is on the house.
LEVI
No way! I gotta give you something.
Orenda wipes off her hands and glances over her shoulder.
ORENDA
You have given enough.
MOOSE
DUDE, she's done?!
LEVI
Check it out!
MOOSE
You're kidding right?
(pause)
Who gets a fuckin' LIZARD for their
first tattoo?
LEVI
Shows what you know, it's a
chameleon.
A gust of wind whips through the room, and the man wakes up.
He raises up, looks around, and notices the window is open.
A VOICE mutters.
The man looks around but sees nothing. He rises to his feet.
10.
ORENDA (V.O.)
(Mikisuki language)
Imposter. You sre not a leader.
The Lizard-man slashes the man's neck with its razor sharp
claws!
The same guy from the pictures NAYATI OSCEOLA, 22, who's hair
is a bun and has a beautiful sleeved arm concentrates on a
BLACK DUDE who's getting a tatt on his shoulder. The tattoo
needle shorts out.
NAYATI
(taps gun)
Come on you piece of shit.
AHANU (TEXT)
Let's go Picasso!
NAYATI
(to black dude)
I gotta jet. Come by tomorrow and
I'll finish it up. Cool?
The black dude nods as he rises to his feet. They give each
other a soulful hand shake and the guy walks to the exit.
Nayati takes the tattoo gun and the rest of his supplies and
slides them into a SATCHEL on the bed.
11.
YAHOLO
Damn it, missed it again.
SANI
What..?
YAHOLO
The numbers, you didn't hear?
Sani scoffs.
SANI
You'll never win, it's rigged.
NAYATI
You can't rush greatness.
YAHOLO (O.S.)
Where you guys headed?
NAYATI
Expo center. Eternal Winds is
hosting their annual Got Ink
contest and --
12.
AHANU
AND my boy is 'bout to kick ass and
take names.
YAHOLO
Nayati it is not wise to fight with
people in these times. You never
know who may have a --
Ahanu laughs.
AHANU
Nah unc'. It's nothin' like that.
He's gonna win a tattoo contest.
YAHOLO
Oh I see. I would not expect
anything less considering --
SANI
Considering it only inflates his
ego! This generation knows nothing
of the panther clan traditions.
SANI (CONT'D)
(to Yaholo)
You see, THAT is what I am talking
about. No respect.
YAHOLO
SANI, leave them alone. It's a new
time. Let them have their fun.
Yaholo sighs.
YAHOLO (CONT'D)
I wonder where he gets his
stubbornness from.
The two guys emerge onto the sidewalk from a chain linked
fence. Nayati face is full of frowns; he's pissed.
13.
AHANU
Bruh, your uncle is cooler than a
bag of ice.
NAYATI
Yeah, wish my parents would've left
me with him.
AHANU
You see that hat? Classic! My man
is a O.S.P.!
AHANU CONT'D)
Old-school Seminole Playa!
NAYATI
(mumbles)
Don't look but L.J. and his crew
are clowning across the street.
JUST KEEP WALKING.
L.J. (O.S.)
Hey, Navajo tribe!
NAYATI
Don't look.
Nayati hears the group laugh. The two guys look like
professional speed walkers.
L.J.
You heard me lil punk ass Indian!
Ahanu peeks over and see the gang in pursuit; his eyes widen.
AHANU
OH SHIT, RUN!
Nayati runs but looks back. His satchel flip flops across his
back with each step.
The number seven bus opens its doors and people pour out.
AHANU (O.S.)
HOL' UP!
NAYATI
Ok go, GO!
L.J. watches the brake lights go off and the bus slowly
starts to pull away.
The door closes and Nayati's bag gets hung on the outside. He
jerks the strap but the bag falls on the street.
L.J.
Got yo' purse lil sissy!
NAYATI
I hate that guy!
AHANU
Don't even trip bruh, we'll get it
back.
NAYATI
All my gear was in there! And why
are you talking like that, BRUH?
(pause)
Newsflash, you're not black.
YAHOLO
Why are you so hard on the boy?
SANI
When we are gone, who will pass on
our traditions?
YAHOLO
You must make our culture more
attractive to him. Let them blend
the old with the new.
SANI
His father would've remembered
where he came from.
YAHOLO
You will lose him also if you don't
change.
16.
YAHOLO (CONT'D)
(pause)
Have you shown him Calligra?
SANI
He is not ready.
YAHOLO
Neither were you, but you learned
Sani. YOU LEARNED.
(pause)
Give him that same grace.
SANI
Huh, what do you know.
YAHOLO
What do I know..?
YAHOLO (CONT'D)
I may not have won the lottery, but
I beat you!
(pause)
Pay up brother.
AHANU (O.S.)
Bruh... BRUH...
A stubby hand slaps Nayati on the arm; snapping him out his
daze. He turns around and looks at Ahanu.
AHANU (CONT'D)
... Don't we have to find yo' spot?
NAYATI
Yeah, just a sec.
17.
AHANU
Damn! That's a big dude.
(pause)
How he holdin' that lil ass gun?
AHANU CONT'D)
Big boy got skills.
Nayati scoffs.
NAYATI
I would've went with a different
color scheme.
AHANU
(points)
What's wrong with --
NAYATI
-- C'mon I got to set-up.
AHANU
Bruh, you don't got no tools. You
can't compete.
AHANU CONT'D)
Wait, where you get that?
NAYATI
Where's there a will there's a way.
(pause)
Oh, the guy with the nose ring is
charging you by the hour.
AHANU
Wait, what?
18.
Orenda and Sable monitor the guys movements. She pulls Sable
in close.
ORENDA
That is him. No matter what, he
must join us.
Sable nods.
ERICA
What, I'm on?! --
(pause)
-- The talent level here doesn't
cease to amaze the public Carl.
However, one guy that has separated
himself from the tribe with his
crazy designs is...
ERICA (CONT'D)
... Nayadi.
Erica thrust the mic into Nayati's face. He leans back and
looks with scorn at the reporter.
ERICA (CONT'D)
Nayadi what do you think of your
chances of winning this year?
NAYATI
It's NA - YA - TI.
NAYATI (CONT'D)
This is easy work. The other guys
got struggle demons.
ERICA
Well there you have it Carl. I'm
Erica Always on it Andrews
reporting --
NAYATI
I bet you are, always on IT.
Erica's face turns red and she does the cut signal to the
camera.
The music rises again and we see tons of people walk through
the Expo. But the focus is on Sable, she weaves through the
crowd; observing Nayati's handiwork.
JUDGE
We have narrowed it down to the
finalist standing before you.
(pause)
The new kid from the westside...
JUDGE (CONT'D)
Matter of fact, give it up for the
queen, the lady with the gifted
hands, ORENDA HOK'EE!
JUDGE (CONT'D)
It was such a tight race, we're
gonna let the you all have the
final say --
(pause)
-- the new kid..?
The judge points to Nayati's work -- the lady with the double
flags looped around her arm. The lady spreads her arms.
JUDGE (CONT'D)
Or the protégée ...
JUDGE (CONT'D)
And the winner is... Cowaya!
NAYATI
Teacher's pet.
AHANU
Tell you one thing, I would be her
pet anytime.
AHANU CONT'D)
What? Bruh, you know she bad.
21.
JUDGE (O.S.)
Nayati!
JUDGE (CONT'D)
You forgot this.
NAYATI
(mumbles)
Great, first place loser's prize.
ERICA
Victory seemed to slip through your
hands today. Do you have any words
NA - YA - TI?
NAYATI
I thought I had it but --
ERICA
So you weren't on IT today. Awe too
bad, maybe next time.
ERICA (CONT'D)
Well there you have it Carl, a guy
that ALMOST made a name for
himself.
AHANU
Bruh, hol' up!
(pause)
You aight? Where you going?
NAYATI
All that cheating made me hungry.
22.
AHANU
I don't know, it went down pretty
fair to me.
NAYATI
Whose side you on?
AHANU
Bruh, really? You know who I'm
rolling with.
AHANU (CONT'D)
What you win?
NAYATI
Probably a gift card.
AHANU
OPEN IT, bruh.
NAYATI
Two-hundred dollars?!
(pause)
They been having this contest for
TEN years, and this all they can
afford?
NAYATI/AHANU
But it's still TWO-HUNDRED DOLLARS!
NAYATI
With two-hundred dollars?
AHANU
Well, we'll make it drizzle.
23.
NAYATI
Are you going to enter the comedy
hour?
AHANU
I'm still working on my lines bruh.
Nayati smirks.
NAYATI
That means you're scared.
AHANU
HEY! Yo' boy ain't scared of --
SABLE
(African accent)
GENTLEMEN ...
AHANU
Where the heck you come from?!
SABLE
Forgive me, I didn't mean to
frighten you.
AHANU
I'm aight. Just looking out for my
homie though.
AHANU CONT'D)
Hol' up, don't I know you?
SABLE
(to Nayati)
Congratulations, you done well
today.
NAYATI
(looks at Ahanu)
At least somebody was paying
attention.
AHANU
Yeah, I taught him everything he
knows.
24.
SABLE
You're an artist as well?
Nayati scoffs.
NAYATI
(mumbles)
Sandwich artist.
SABLE
I work for the best ink master in
Miami, some would even say the
world, Orenda --
AHANU
I knew you looked familiar! You
were in there with her.
SABLE
I am here to offer you an
apprenticeship. To sit under the
best.
AHANU
Oh snap! Bruh we made it!
NAYATI
Nah, I'm good.
(pause)
I don't do well with... SITTING.
Let's go Ahanu.
Sable shrugs and walks away. Ahanu stands baffled between the
two -- he sprints after his friend.
AHANU
Bruh!
AHANU CONT'D)
That's a chance of a lifetime!
NAYATI
I'm not the sitting type.
25.
AHANU
You could have at least let me get
them digits before you said no. Oh
girl SOUNDED GOOD....
Nayati scoffs.
Cowaya looks into the rear view mirror at Orenda and Sable
talk in the backseat.
SABLE
... He is a difficult one indeed. A
pompous asshole that will test your
patience.
ORENDA
He will come, his curiosity won't
let him stay away.
(to Cowaya)
Let us go. I must rest before I
visit chief Yaholo.
The license plate says: ETRNL SOL. Seconds later, the car
speeds away.
L.J. walks with his crew kidding around with the satchel.
L.J.
Who carries a purse with no money
it?
L.J. (CONT'D)
You need to watch where you're
going grandpah. Mess around and get
hurt in these streets.
The guy bends down and picks up his tickets. He stands up and
returns the stare.
L.J. (CONT'D)
Excuse ME, Mr. Officer. We just
passin' through. Have a good day
sir.
L.J. nods and his crew quickly turn the corner.
James who has been holding his stomach in the whole time,
finally exhales.
JAMES
Whew, I got to find a new line of
work.
YAHOLO
Toe-Toe! You hungry boy?
Yaholo scoops the dog up and walks to the dining room. From
the living room we see Yaholo grab a bowl, a bag, and pours
food into the bowl.
AHANU
Bruh, is that papa Sani in the
heat?
NAYATI
Yeah, he's praying for rain again.
Nayati picks up his pace and digs for his keys. Ahanu
continues to stare as they enter the gate.
AHANU
He couldn't find a spot in the
shade to his dance?
(pause)
He gonna mess 'round and pass out.
NAYATI
C'mon.
Ahanu grabs the remote off the coffee table, sits on the
couch with his feet propped, and channel surfs.
NAYATI (O.S.)
What you got a taste for?
AHANU
Got any Chipa?
28.
NAYATI
There's none in the fridge!
The back door swings open, and Sani enters drenched in sweat.
He doesn't say anything but goes toward the living room.
Ahanu sees Sani in the corner of his eye and quickly turns
down the T.V.
AHANU
What's happening papa Sani?
Sani doesn't say a word. He walks over to the radio and turns
it off.
AHANU CONT'D)
Nayati got second place in the
contest today.
AHANU
(whispers)
Dang bruh, that heat got him
tripping.
NAYATI
Oh now you understand what I'm
talking about.
SANI (O.S.)
Nayati take the plate on the
counter to Yaholo!
Nayati reaches and grabs the foiled covered plate and walks
toward the door.
Ahanu springs to his feet and cuts off his path -- he looks
at the Chipa in his hand.
29.
AHANU
(points)
Bruh, why you lie?
Nayati smirks.
NAYATI
Technically I didn't lie...
NAYATI (CONT'D)
I said there wasn't anymore in the
FRIDGE.
(pause)
This was on the counter.
Ahanu shakes his head.
AHANU
So what's up, you gonna take that
job or not?
NAYATI
I haven't changed my mind.
AHANU
That's messed up. You tell me I
don't have courage for comedy
night, but you won't jump on a
chance of a lifetime.
(pause)
You scared they gonna blow you away
at the Winds?
NAYATI
(to mailman)
I'll take it, thanks.
Nayati skims through the mail, but an envelope catches his
eye. He opens it and reads it.
NAYATI (CONT'D)
(whispers)
What the Hell?
AHANU
What's up?
NAYATI
We're about to lose the house.
30.
AHANU
Damn. What you gonna do?
NAYATI
Uncle Yaholo!
NAYATI (CONT'D)
What the hell!
NAYATI
So you guys were never going to
tell me about this?
31.
YAHOLO
Sani didn't think you were mature
enough.
NAYATI
What about you? Am I?
YAHOLO
Calligra is a sacred tradition
Nayati. It is not to be taken
lightly.
Yaholo sighs.
YAHOLO (CONT'D)
YES. You have much growing to do.
NAYATI
I expect this from Sani... But not
you uncle.
(pause)
Not you.
YAHOLO
WAIT.
(pause)
I'll teach you.
NAYATI
Really?
YAHOLO
But you must not tell Sani!
Nayati nods.
YAHOLO (CONT'D)
Be here in the morning.
YAHOLO (CONT'D)
(mumbles)
Sani is going to kill me.
Levi unlocks the front door. The setting sun partially blinds
his vision as he looks at Moose hang out the back window of a
car.
LEVI
If I start feeling better. I'll go.
MOOSE
Does the baby tummy hurt?!
(pause)
You gotta man up bro!
LEVI
Dude whatever, says the guy in the
backseat of an Uber.
LEVI
Hey can you wake me up in an hour?
She keeps busy in the kitchen; the music drowns him out.
Levi opens his mouth to speak again, but waves the thought
away. He goes upstairs to his room.
AHANU
Man these chicks are fire! I'm
having somebody's baby tonight!
NAYATI
What?!
33.
AHANU
Uh, I mean somebody's having my
baby tonight.
Nayati smiles and shakes his head -- He turns to his left and
is stunned when he beholds a Native American female with long
flowing hair, TENECA CUMPAH (19) seated at the bar. He goes
on the prowl.
AHANU (CONT'D)
Bruh, you better find you somebody
cause I'm feeling lucky tonight.
You feel me..?
Ahanu turns to see Nayati walking towards the bar.
AHANU (CONT'D)
(Arms open)
BRUH?!
NAYATI
It's not everyday a guy sees a real
life Pocahontas.
NAYATI (CONT'D)
Let me buy you a drink.
TENECA
I don't drink.
NAYATI
Let's dance.
TENECA
I'll pass.
NAYATI
Let me get this straight, you come
to a club looking smoking hot, not
drinking. OR dancing... I don't get
it.
34.
TENECA
That's not why I'm here.
NAYATI
Then why..?
Nayati and Teneca twist and turn all over each other while
kissing in the backseat of her car. He reaches under the back
of her shirt and un-snaps her bra; he's going for it all.
TENECA
(whispers)
No... stop.
TENECA (CONT'D)
I said, NO!
She pushes him away -- his head slams against the window.
NAYATI
Dang!
NAYATI (CONT'D)
(mumbles)
Freaking tease.
TENECA
What did you call me?!
TENECA (CONT'D)
That's what I thought, Machakw.
NAYATI
What did you call me?
TENECA
MACHAKW, it means HORNY, TOAD. Now
what?
TENECA (CONT'D)
When we're married the toad can get
as much as he wants.
TENECA (CONT'D)
How the contest go?
NAYATI
I got second.
He rubs it.
TENECA
No way! Get outta here! Why you
didn't tell me?
TENECA (CONT'D)
Nevermind. So what's next?
NAYATI
I got offered a spot at Eternal
Winds.
TENECA
Whoa, that's so exciting!
(pause)
But you don't look excited.
NAYATI
It's for an apprentice. They want
ME to be an apprentice.
(pause)
Baby I'm a VET.
TENECA
You gotta start somewhere babe.
Plus we can start saving for the
wedding.
36.
TENECA (CONT'D)
(pause)
I'm so proud of you though.
NAYATI
Ok, you're gonna get Matchbox
started again.
Teneca laughs.
TENECA
Matchbox? It's Machakw. You need to
seriously learn your heritage babe.
ORENDA (V.O.)
(Mikisuki language)
Awake mighty one, awake.
ORENDA (V.O.)
I command you to awake.
Levi raises up and wipes his face. He reaches over and takes
a sip of a Slurpee next to the bed.
LEVI
I have to move out of this
hellhole.
ORENDA (V.O.)
(voice echoes)
Awake from your slumber oh great
one!
Levi skin scales over, he screams in agony and rolls onto the
floor.
37.
ORENDA (V.O.)
Mighty Tiyohali, you have another
task. Go... GO AND DO MY WILL!
Yaholo cuts his eye at the dog then back at the T.V.
YAHOLO
No, you've already been out. Sit
down.
YAHOLO (CONT'D)
Toe-Toe, what's gotten into you?
YAHOLO (CONT'D)
OK, OK. You win, come on.
Yaholo scoops the dog up and walks toward the door.
YAHOLO
Alright, do your business.
YAHOLO (CONT'D)
You brought papa out here for
nothing?
(pause)
Bad dog.
While Yaholo scolds the dog, a giant tail creeps out of the
tree behind him.
YAHOLO (CONT'D)
What?! Crazy dog. What do you want?
Yaholo bends down for the dog, but the tail snags him; and
coils around his throat -- it lifts him high in the branches.
Yaholo struggles for freedom! His eyes can only see green
leaves, but then -- the Lizard-man colors change; the camo
disappears.
ORENDA (V.O.)
You call yourself a guide to the
blind? You do not deserve to be a
leader.
JAMES
(whispers)
Damn!
39.
James lifts up the tape and walks over to the body. He bends
down and examines every inch of the old man.
JAMES
Who would want to kill an old man?
(pause)
This city is getting ridiculous.
FEMALE DETECTIVE
Crazier by the minute.
JAMES
Hello little fella.
JAMES (CONT'D)
Now isn't that rich.
JAMES (CONT'D)
Detective, where's the rope the he
was hung from?
FEMALE DETECTIVE
There wasn't one.
James takes out his phone and snaps a picture of the pattern.
He looks at the dog.
JAMES
Tell me boy, who had a problem with
your owner?
40.
James walks back to his car clutching the dog under his arm.
Nayati and Ahanu enter the shop and see a few people spread
out. Some sit and wait; while a couple are getting work done.
AHANU
Guess yo' boy is an apprentice too.
NAYATI
That's alright, I'll show him up,
next time around.
ORENDA (O.S.)
May I help you?
AHANU
Hot damn! I mean, HELLO.
NAYATI
Amateur, watch this...
NAYATI (CONT'D)
I'm Nay --
ORENDA
I know who you are. Mr. Second
place.
Ahanu bursts into laughter.
NAYATI
Oh you got jokes, huh. You came
looking for me.
(pause)
Ahanu, let's bounce.
ORENDA
You must learn to control your
emotions.
ORENDA (CONT'D)
Let me show you around. I think you
may like it here.
AHANU
I see ya playa.
Ahanu checks out the decorations and artwork in the shop. His
smile leaves quick when he spots Teneca approaching the
entrance. Ahanu scrambles to his friend!
NAYATI
The CHEYENNE SOL NOVA.
Orenda reaches from behind him and removes the tool from his
grip.
ORENDA
I can tell you know a good thing
when you see it.
AHANU CONT'D)
Right here.
(to Teneca)
Hi, Teneca.
Teneca eyeballs Ahanu, then she cuts her eye at Nayati, and
clears her throat.
42.
NAYATI
What about my girl..?
NAYATI (CONT'D)
TENECA, what... I thought... Did
you get off early?
TENECA
Looks like I got off just in time.
TENECA
(sarcastically)
Oh no she didn't.
AHANU
(whispers)
Let her make it sis.
ORENDA
Sable didn't think you would come,
but I knew you couldn't resist.
Teneca comes unglued, and marches toward them! She takes off
her ear rings in the process.
TENECA
Oh, I'll show her some resistance.
AHANU
NAYATI, don't you think we ought to
be heading to that thing...
43.
NAYATI
Huh?
AHANU
That, THING.
NAYATI
OH YEAH, that thing.
Nayati walks over to Teneca and nudges her toward the door.
He turns back to Orenda.
NAYATI (CONT'D)
Thanks for everything. I can start
tomorrow.
Teneca and Nayati sit in the front seat, while Ahanu sits in
the back.
Teneca grips the steering wheel tight. She cuts her eyes over
at Nayati.
TENECA
You're crazy if you think you're
working there.
NAYATI
What do you mean?!
TENECA
What do I mean? I know a hoe, when
I see a hoe.
AHANU
Technically we don't know if she's--
TENECA
Was I talking to you?
Ahanu sees her glare. He locks his mouth and throws away the
key.
TENECA (CONT'D)
You heard what I said.
NAYATI
C'mon babe, you can't be serious...
Teneca looks at him and rolls her eyes; she's dead serious.
NAYATI (CONT'D)
Why would I want a old played out
cougar, when I got a hot kitty at
home?
NAYATI (CONT'D)
This is a major career move babe.
I'll be the owner of that joint
before the year is done.
(pause)
After that, I'll fire the chick.
NAYATI (CONT'D)
C'mon babe, I need this.
(pause)
I'll do anything you want me to do.
TENECA
Anything..?
NAYATI
WHATEVER you want.
TENECA
Come to the Mistehoka.
NAYATI
English babe, English.
TENECA
The religious gathering tonight.
NAYATI
Uh... Babe, but what about that
THING I mentioned earlier.
TENECA
Don't start that crap again.
Nayati sighs.
NAYATI
Ok, ok. We'll be there.
AHANU
WE? I'm trying out my comedy
routine tonight.
AHANU CONT'D)
Nevermind, I guess WE'LL be there.
They lock eyes for a time and then the bird flies away.
JAMES
What in the world?
He reaches down under his desk and pats Toe-Toe on the head.
MALE VOICE
James London!
JAMES
(whispers)
Shit. Yes sir...?
ROBERT
What did you find out on the Yaholo
case?
JAMES
You're gonna call me crazy, but the
only thing that's connected to this
case are... lizards.
ROBERT
You been in the game this long, and
all you can come up with is a
lizard?
(pause)
C'mon man, you killin' me. Maybe it
is time for your ass to retire.
JAMES
Believe me, I didn't mean to stay
in it this long. Thought my numbers
would've hit by now.
(pause)
I do have a hot lead that I'm
working on. Give me a day or so.
ROBERT
James you better be right on this
one. Man, I got nursing homes
thinking somebody cutting into
their profits.
ROBERT (CONT'D)
Is that dog I smell?
JAMES
Uh yes, I'm trying this new
cologne. They say the ladies love
it. I may be able to finally snag a
date.
ROBERT
Not smelling like wet dog.
(pause)
Next, you gonna tell me they making
a cologne for black folks that
smells like fried chicken.
JAMES
That was a close one. Let's go get
a bite to eat boy.
AHANU
What up homie, papa Sani throwing a
party?
NAYATI
Somethings up, he's not the
partying type.
AHANU
You straight? Want me to stay?
NAYATI
Nah, I'm good.
(pause)
Hey babe, I might not be there
tonight. I'll call you later.
NAYATI
What happen?
A Native American woman that looks wise past her years WINEMA
CUMPAH (40's) walks over to Nayati and grabs his hand.
NAYATI (CONT'D)
Winema? Teneca just left for church
tonight.
WINEMA
Nayati, I'm going to need you to
sit down...
Nayati shakes his head.
NAYATI
Nah, I'm good. What's wrong...?
WINEMA
Yaholo... Yaholo has been murdered.
WINEMA (CONT'D)
Nayati, Nayati..?
Orenda stands with her back toward us. She speaks with Sable
and Cowaya.
ORENDA
It is time to pay a visit to
Calian.
COWAYA
(African accent)
Let me take care of that old
bastard.
ORENDA
Do not underestimate him. Calian is
a formidable enemy. His lineage is
from warriors. I've prepared his
demise.
(pause)
Get the girl.
Orenda creeps out the shadows. Her face has wrinkles all over
it. She reaches out her shriveled hand, and places it over
the teens face.
ORENDA (CONT'D)
(Mikisuki language)
Life return unto me.
Orenda ages backwards and the teen grows older, till she
withers.
ORENDA (CONT'D)
After Calian is out of the way. I
will convince the boy to bring me
the amulet. His hormones are in
overdrive.
AHANU
Is this on?
AHANU CONT'D)
Hey everybody out there. Uh, I'm
gonna say a few jokes. Is that
cool..?
JAMES
Eat up boy, that's Miami's finest.
JAMES (CONT'D)
Well I be damn. Would you look at
that.
51.
BLACK WOMAN
Girl he done forgot to pay his
bill. I told him, if we got
together I'd handle all that.
(pause)
Girl yeah, you know them Indians
got money!
She sees the Lizard-man and his tail whip back and forth.
Then its colors camouflages with the house.
DISPATCHER (V.O.)
A tail ma'am? Are you sure it
wasn't a --
52.
DISPATCHER (V.O.)
Sorry ma'am, we will have someone
over there.
JAMES
Well boy, maybe I'm not going
crazy.
The un-marked car makes a U-turn and speeds down the street.
CALIAN
(Mikisuki language)
Die you evil beast!
The black woman opens the gate. She hears racket on the
inside of the house.
BLACK WOMAN
Calian you aight?! CALIAN....
53.
The Lizard-man steps in closer. The long tail whips back and
forth.
Calian tries a fake move and goes for the spear, but the
creature doesn't take the bait. The tail latches around the
old man's neck and reels him in closer.
James pulls up in front of the house and sees the black woman
inside the gate. He opens the glove box and pulls out his
gun.
CALIAN
(Mikisuki language)
FIRE!
JAMES
Ma'am are you the one who made the
call?
BLACK WOMAN
(points)
MY FRIEND NEEDS HELP IN THERE!
JAMES
Stay here, backup is on the way.
James kicks the door in with his gun drawn -- He sees Calian
and Levi on the floor.
CALIAN
(whisper)
Hok'ee is here...
JAMES
What? Hockey?
CALIAN
She is coming for us.
JAMES
Who? Who's coming?
James gets closer to the Calian, but the old man faints.
55.
BLACK WOMAN
Awe nah, Calian! Lord why you have
to take him!
POLICE OFFICER
Ma'am, just a few more questions...
The woman squints her eyes and curls her lips in anger at the
cop.
BLACK WOMAN
(hand on hip)
You think I'm crazy huh? I know
what I saw.
JAMES (O.S.)
Officer!
JAMES (CONT'D)
I'll take it from here --
(pause)
-- Ma'am do you mind..?
JAMES (CONT'D)
(whispers)
Listen, the lizard thing, I believe
you. But I'm gonna have to find out
more about what's going on.
BLACK WOMAN
Ok -- HEY, that Winema lady might
know something.
JAMES
Winema?
BLACK WOMAN
She's like their preacher or
something.
JAMES
Thanks, I'll check into it.
WINEMA
We bid farewell to a great man, a
chief, a sage of the community, we
were blessed by the Great Spirit
with presence, and we are eternally
grateful.
57.
SANI
I already miss you greatly dear
brother. May the ancestors guide
you to a winning hand for eternity.
Four large Native American men take the coffin and place it
into the swamp. They watch it float away.
NAYATI
You hungry?
SANI
I knew this day would come. We
could hide for only so long.
NAYATI
Huh? What are you talking about, so
you know who did this? We gotta
tell the cops.
SANI
I have much to show you. Maybe
there's still time.
SANI
Come, come.
NAYATI
(touches wall)
I miss them so much.
SANI (O.S.)
His spirit lives forever.
NAYATI
What good is that to me? He's gone,
mama is gone, and now Yaholo.
(pause)
Forever is an illusion.
Sani reaches for a hollow bone and bowl on the shelf. He dips
the bone in the bowl, then touches the picture on the wall.
The picture of his father begins to move.
NAYATI (CONT'D)
WHAT? HOW? Papa Denali?
NAYATI (CONT'D)
What is this?
59.
SANI
We can see them but they can't see
us. But they feel us. Forever is
real Nayati.
Nayati father wraps his arm around his mother and they blow
him a kiss.
NAYATI
I saw Yaholo doing this before he
died. He was going to teach me.
SANI
I will teach you now. It is my duty
to pass this on. We have much work
to do.
Nayati looks back at the wall and his parents wave and stop
moving. He rubs his hand across the wall.
SANI
First lesson of Calligra, you must
believe what you paint into
existence. If your heart is not
there, the Great Spirit will know.
SANI (CONT'D)
Whatever you touch or draw will
come to life. Except for people. We
do not possess the power to give
life. Only He does --
Sani points to the sky. He then taps a stick in the corner
with a snake drawn on it. The stick collapses to a snake on
the ground. It hisses and strikes.
SANI (CONT'D)
Grab it by the tail.
Sani smiles. He reaches down and grabs the snake by the tail.
The snake turns back into a stick.
60.
SANI (CONT'D)
The power is yours Nayati. It has
been granted to us.
(pause)
You must believe in ancient way. It
is a part of you.
Nayati peeks out the door at the truck. The truck revs its
engine a few times.
SANI
Who is that?
Nayati shrugs.
NAYATI
Somebody tripping. Stay here I'll
check.
AHANU
Who you thought I was, L.J.?!
NAYATI
It's too shorty --
(pause)
-- I'll be back Sani.
NAYATI
I bet you got a good deal on this.
AHANU
Yeah, it's pretty tight huh. Check
out the sound system.
Ahanu turns up the volume. The bass makes the truck rattle
and shake.
NAYATI
DUDE PLEASE!
NAYATI (CONT'D)
I thought your truck was gonna
break. Will this thing make it over
to Teneca's?
AHANU
Why you got to be hatin' on my
ride. Yeah it will make it over
there!
Nayati scoffs.
NAYATI
The Red Carpet? That's the best you
can come up with?
62.
JAMES
Calian's neighbor said you were
some kind of leader?
Winema enters the room holding an old silver tray with two
cups of tea on it. She puts it down on a table and hands a
cup to James.
WINEMA
I am a servant of the people; like
you.
JAMES
She also mentioned seeing something
unusual hanging around outside of
his house that night.
WINEMA
Mr. London, do you believe in the
supernatural?
JAMES
Call me old fashion, but I believe
in what I can see.
WINEMA
Something tells me that even if you
could see it, your heart has chosen
not to accept it.
JAMES
Come to think about it, I do
remember seeing something weird
that night.
(pause)
63.
JAMES (CONT'D)
There was a beautiful tattoo on the
assailant's arm, but as I got
closer for a better look, it just
vanished.
WINEMA
Could it be her?
JAMES
Who are you talking about, that
Hockey lady?
WINEMA
How do you know that name?
JAMES
The old man mentioned it just
before he blanked out. Did she have
something to do with this?
WINEMA
Hok'ee, it means the abandon.
Originally her name was Orenda
LaKota, which translate to friend.
But she has sworn a vow to kill the
chiefs that broke covenant with the
land.
JAMES
So she's angry for losing her land.
Now we're getting somewhere.
WINEMA
Some say that she never got revenge
on them, so her ghost would roam
the land looking for their
descendants.
JAMES
Wait a minute, did you say ghost?
You don't believe in GHOST do you?
64.
WINEMA
It's not what I believe Mr. London,
(pause)
My eyes are open to the truth.
Winema rises to her feet and puts James' cup on the tray.
WINEMA (CONT'D)
In our culture, a vow is sacred.
WINEMA (CONT'D)
Pahana, everything you don't see
with your eyes.
JAMES
Pahana?
WINEMA
It means lost white brother.
Sani steps out the door and looks at his small garden. He has
a basket in his hand.
To his far right is the Great Horned Owl. They lock eyes for
a second. Spreading its massive wings the bird flies off into
the distance.
James and Winema talk on the porch when they see the red
truck pulls up in front of the house bumping music.
TENECA
Yeah..?
NAYATI (V.O.)
Come check out my boys ride.
Winema watches the window slide down and Nayati sticks out
his arm.
WINEMA
Nayati, ISTONKO....
AHANU
Bruh, she said, HELLO.
NAYATI
Oh, what's up Winema! I'm come by
for --
TENECA
I'll be back mama!
(pause)
Love you!
WINEMA
Be careful!
66.
NAYATI
Who is that?
TENECA
Tell you in a sec.
(pause)
Ahanu I love it, let's make a few
blocks.
The car door is open and James has a leg hanging out of it.
He has the notepad in hand and a cell phone to his ear.
JAMES
Paula, run a check on a Orenda
HOK'EE would ya...
(pause)
Nothing? Ok, run a check on all the
tattoo shops in town....
NAYATI
Two dead guys in a matter of a
couple of days? Somethings up.
(pause)
We got to do something.
TENECA
That's the cops job babe. Let them
handle it.
TENECA (CONT'D)
You're coming to the Green Corn
festival to watch me dance tonight?
NAYATI
THAT'S TONIGHT? -- I'm just
kidding, We'll be there.
NAYATI (CONT'D)
I can't let this slide. Yaholo is
not going out like that.
(pause)
I'm going to work to show my face,
then we got to get my bag back from
L.J.
AHANU
(Dismissively)
Bruh you trippin', L.J.?
NAYATI
Trust me on this one. I got
something for him tonight.
WINEMA (V.O.)
I am at the festival getting
everything prepared. If you get
hungary there is Taal-Holeke on the
stove.
ORENDA
Nayati, come over here. I want to
give you your first lesson...
ORENDA (CONT'D)
See how I'm blending the colors?
NAYATI
Huh -- Oh, yeah. That's pretty
cool.
ORENDA
Get closer, I want you to catch all
of this.
Orenda finishes the tattoo. The woman snaps out of her sleep.
She pays Orenda and exits the building.
ORENDA
Did you enjoy your lesson?
NAYATI
Most definitely, you got crazy
skills.
ORENDA
I can teach you all kinds of things
if you let me.
ORENDA (CONT'D)
Would you like a private lesson?
NAYATI
Uh... My girl, my girl is
performing tonight.
Teneca turns around and the bird is gone. She walks over and
closes the window. When she turns back, Sable is staring at
her.
SABLE
BOO!
Sable enters the hallway wiping blood from her mouth. She
eyeballs Teneca and pimp slaps her!
SABLE
(Mikisuki language)
Bitch!
70.
JAMES
We'll play later.
James tosses a toy in the backseat; the dog takes the bait.
NAYATI
I can't.
NAYATI (CONT'D)
I love my girl.
ORENDA
This is how you return your
gratitude? So be it --
JAMES
Is Ms. Hok --
(pause)
-- Hey, you're the kid from
earlier. What are you --
NAYATI
Excuse me.
ORENDA (O.S.)
How may I help you?
WINEMA
NAYATI, is Teneca with you?! She is
performing next!
INTERCUT:
NAYATI
I thought she was with you.
WINEMA
This is not like her. I'm going to
call the police.
NAYATI
Ok, I'll call you if I hear
anything.
(pause)
Don't worry Winema, the great
Spirit has our back.
JAMES
Nice place. How long have you been
here?
ORENDA
Seems like an eternity. Listen, I
have an errand to run. You can be
the first on my list tomorrow.
JAMES
Oh no, I'm too old for one of
those. I'm investigating a
homicide, well actually two
homicides.
(pause)
They were Native American men.
72.
ORENDA
I see. Since I'm Native American,
you figured you'd start with me.
I'm sorry I won't be any help to
you.
James smirks.
JAMES
It's nothing like that. Sorry for
the inconvenience. If you hear
anything could you give me a call?
ORENDA
No problem. If you ever change your
mind, your tatt will be on the
house.
James opens the car door and gets inside. He watches Orenda
lock up. Toe-Toe barks non-stop.
JAMES
Yeah boy, she gives me the creeps
too.
Nayati sits on a bench with a phone to his ear. The red pick-
up pulls up in front of him.
Nayati jumps up and goes to the truck and opens the door --
NAYATI
We got to find Teneca bro! I have
to make a stop first.
Nayati slams the door and the truck pulls off in a cloud of
smoke.
The knob drops to the ground, and the door creeks open.
NAYATI (O.S.)
I'm home grandpa.
SANI
Come on up. I've been waiting on
you.
Nayati and Ahanu stare at a garage with the door let up. A
few late model cars with flashy rims are parked in front of a
building.
AHANU
You just gonna walk up in there ask
for the bag?
NAYATI
I got a few tricks up my sleeves.
AHANU
What?!
NAYATI
Just c'mon.
74.
AHANU
What you doing bruh?
NAYATI
Help me out.
AHANU
I don't get it. You bringing a
thousand sticks to a gun fight?
(pause)
Bruh, you know they packing.
They drop the sticks inside the window; then Nayati shimmies
through the crack.
Ahanu watches him take a pouch and a bone out his pocket.
AHANU (CONT'D)
(whispers)
What in the Harry Potter sorcery
stone?!
NAYATI
Watch this...
NAYATI (CONT'D)
(whispers)
Do your thing!
GOON
Say homie, is that sissy boy in the
corner?
L.J.
Yeah right.
L.J. (CONT'D)
Ain't this is ah bitch. Sissy boy
gon' roll up in MY spot? Let's go
handle this nigga.
L.J. leads his pack to their prey.
L.J. (CONT'D)
I gotta give it to you sissy boy,
you got balls comin' up in here!
AHANU
Say bruh, whatever your plan is
betta make it fast, cause I'm bout
to be out!
SANI (V.O.)
(echoes)
You have to believe.
NAYATI
(Mikisuki language)
I command you to attack!
Nayati points to the gang and the snakes swerve around
towards L.J.
L.J. and his crew turn the corner unaware of the brood until
they hear -- the deafening sound of hissing! They look down
at the vipers moving toward them!
GOON
BRUH, this is some crazy VooDoo
shit!
NAYATI
Still wanna bail out?
AHANU
(points)
Is that the bag on the table?
The guys run over to the table and Nayati picks up the bag.
He opens it and pulls out an elaborate woven bracelet made by
his mother.
NAYATI
Now I have my parents spirit with
me.
AHANU
Let's go get yo' girl.
James opens the door and he covers his nose from the smell,
he flashes his light and sees a bunch of bones in the corner
of the closet.
James flips off the flashlight and hides in a corner. His gun
is cocked next to his side.
SABLE (O.S.)
We have no time to waste. Prepare
the sacrifice.
James peeks around the corner into the lobby. He sees Sable
with a phone in her hand and searching for something behind
the counter.
77.
SABLE (CONT'D)
I can not find my --
(pause)
-- I found it!
SABLE (CONT'D)
Soon the amulet will be mine again.
Eternal life awaits us.
JAMES
(whispers)
Eternal life? What the Hell?
ORENDA
(Nayati's voice)
Grandpa I can't see you.
SANI (O.S.)
I've never been GRANDPA.
(pause)
You can't use old tricks on me, you
old witch.
She pushes back with all her strength, but the old man's
advantage of gravity and weight gets him close to his goal.
SANI
DIE YOU EVIL WITCH!
ORENDA (O.S.)
Got you!
ORENDA (CONT'D)
Old tricks always work.
ORENDA (CONT'D)
This does not belong to you.
NAYATI
Don't say nothing to Sani I don't
want him to --
Nayati stares up at the window and sees the giant horned owl
escape out the window clasping the amulet.
NAYATI (CONT'D)
Sani!
Nayati enters the room and sees his grandfather on the floor
covered in blood.
NAYATI
NO! Sani, NO!
SANI
Believe in the power --
SANI (CONT'D)
Believe in the power that you
possess.
(pause)
The panther clan is the mightiest
of all clans.
Nayati nods.
SANI (CONT'D)
When the time comes, the Great
Spirit will be your guide.
NAYATI
She will pay for this Sani, I
promise you and the ancestors.
AHANU (O.S.)
The cops on they way bruh.
AHANU
... My granny used to tell me
stories of the sacrifices. She said
it had to be a full moon and it was
always in the same spot...
(pause)
Manitou lake, it was the place of --
NAYATI
Supernatural force.
AHANU
How you know that bruh?
NAYATI
I - I don't know. I just knew it.
Sable glances into the side mirror. She observes the white
Crown Victoria tailing her.
TENECA
Somebody help!
COWAYA
Scream all you want, no one is
coming for you.
COWAYA (CONT'D)
Your purpose is almost complete.
Sable parks the bike and takes off her helmet. She glances
out across the parking lot and sees the white car in the
distance. She strolls into the mouth of the woods.
JAMES
Great, I get to walk INTO a trap.
(pause)
Retirement is not coming fast
enough.
The red pickup creeps into a parking spot. The doors slowly
open.
AHANU
We ain't got much time bruh.
COWAYA
Enchantress may you live forever.
ORENDA
I feel the sweet nectar of eternity
brewing in the air.
82.
COWAYA
Sable will be here soon.
ORENDA
It is good you have saved yourself
for such a time as this. Your
sacrifice will not be in vain.
The guys search the woods with wide eyes and their heads on
swivels.
Nayati touches the tree and pulls out a bow and arrow that
glows.
AHANU CONT'D)
What tha hell?
TENECA (O.S.)
Somebody help!
NAYATI
You hear that?
AHANU
(points)
Yeah, it came from over there.
NAYATI
Come on let's go!
SABLE (O.S.)
(whisper)
Pahana!
JAMES
I am not lost.
SABLE
Good you know what it means. Lets
see if you really know the way.
JAMES
What tha heck?
JAMES
(whispers)
ToeToe? -- Come here boy!
JAMES (CONT'D)
Put your hands --
Sable does a spinning kick and knocks the gun into some
shrubs. She then delivers a wicked kick combination to James'
body and head!
James falls to the ground and shakes his head; she dazed him
good. He sees his gun about five feet away.
SABLE
You shouldn't have come here
Pahana.
James stands to his feet and wipes blood from his mouth.
JAMES
That's one thing we can agree on.
Where's the girl?
JAMES (CONT'D)
Alright, I see talking isn't
working. I was taught to never hit
a woman, but in this case I'm going
to make an exception.
SABLE
The Pahana is a little rusty I see.
JAMES
Now I see what Tyson's opponents
felt like.
85.
SABLE
This is where we part ways Pahana.
ARF! ARF!
Toe-Toe comes into frame running full speed and leaps onto
Sable's back. The demon-woman spins and reaches for the small
dog but Toe-Toe has a firm grip on the back of her neck.
SABLE
PAHANA.
James still points the pistol till it's empty. His eyes are
focused on her as smoke swirls from the nozzle.
SABLE
(soft echoe)
Thank you Pahana!
James nods.
James walks over and picks up the chain. He then looks over
at his poor pet and runs to assist him.
86.
JAMES
(holds dog)
If it wasn't for you, I'd be a
goner. I'll never forget you boy.
JAMES (CONT'D)
TOE-TOE..?
(pause)
Thank God you're alive! Don't scare
me like that boy.
TENECA (O.S.)
Nayati... HELP!
Orenda looks up at the full moon. She casts off the cloak.
ORENDA
It is time...
Orenda takes the knife. She lifts it high into the air over
Teneca.
ORENDA (CONT'D)
(Mikisuki language)
There are no limits to time and
space. Seasons stand still there's
no night or day.
(pause)
Life eternal takes all precedence,
because it's granted as my
inheritance.
Tears stream down Teneca's face. She knows her time is up.
Teneca eyes pop open and she sees Nayati holding a bow in the
distance.
87.
TENECA
Nayati... HELP!
NAYATI
Save your little poems for someone
else.
ORENDA
They must not hinder the process.
Stop them.
COWAYA
With pleasure!
AHANU
Oh snap, this some African Twilight
shit!
The giant beast savors its prey. We even see a smile peek
past the animals fangs. It lunges in the guys direction --
NAYATI
(while running)
I got a plan!
(pause)
Let's split up!
AHANU
You sure!
NAYATI
Just do it!
They split into different directions but the wild beast goes
after the weaker target -- Ahanu.
Ahanu dashes through the trees and sees the animal trailing
behind.
88.
AHANU
That's just great!
(to Nayati)
HURRY BRUH! FRIGHT NIGHT ON MY
TAIL!
ORENDA
Now where were we..?
JAMES
Your friend Sable sends her
regards.
JAMES (CONT'D)
I knew it was something weird about
her!
The giant coyote creeps through the woods sniffing the air
above; saliva drips from its mouth.
AHANU
(whispers)
Great Spirit ya boy could use a
little help down here...
AHANU CONT'D)
C'mon doggy, you don't want to eat
me. I'll make your tummy hurt.
ROAR!
AHANU
(whispers)
WHOA... Nayati!
The two fearless animals circle each other; sizing each other
up, waiting for the perfect moment to strike.
The coyote springs out first but is met with the back paw of
the panther sending it crashing into one of cypress trees.
James unties the last of the ropes and helps Teneca from the
stone table.
JAMES
C'mon let's get out of here!
They run towards the trees but we see the giant owl-woman
swoop down and grab James by the collar. It carries him a
little ways and drops him to the ground.
TENECA
Come on you got to get up!
James grunts.
JAMES
I think my legs broken. Where's my
gun? You're gonna have to get ready
for when she comes back.
Teneca sees the pistol some distance away. She sprints over
to it. Suddenly, Orenda snatches her up and flies away.
TENECA
Please help me!
The Coyote whips back around and bites into the panthers
front paw crushing its bones. In obvious pain the panther
limps from trying to put pressure on the paw.
COWAYA (V.O.)
You're good but not good enough.
(pause)
After I'm finished with you and
your friend. We will drink the
sweet nectar of the sacrifice.
The coyote charges the panther and leaps into the sky -- the
panther accepts the challenge and leaps too!
Nayati fakes like he's going to swat with the good paw and
swats the Cowaya with the bad paw.
91.
The coyote hits the ground first. The panther lands with
agile grace and a slight limp.
NAYATI (V.O.)
Come on, we got to save Teneca!
Teneca screams but the light sucks the life from her
unwilling body.
ORENDA (V.O.)
It will be over soon my darling.
ROAR!
AHANU
Teneca, c'mon we gotta get you
outta here.
The panther lunges to attack again but the giant bird knocks
him away with one of its strong wings! The cat tumbles like a
black ball of yarn across the ground.
Before the cat has stop rolling the giant birds swoops in,
scoops him up, and flies high above the trees -- The panther
is dropped to its demise but a tree break its fall.
NAYATI
(grunts)
Bro get her out of here.
AHANU
C'mon we gotta go.
The sound of a screech echoes the skies, but we don't see the
creature.
NAYATI
Great Spirit be my guide.
Nayati stumbles back and the bird reaches out for the kill--
BANG!
ORENDA (V.O.)
(Echoes)
NO!
Nayati gazes into the sky. Teneca comes over to help him
walk. She is restored to a young woman again. They embrace
each other.
AHANU
We appreciate it and if you need
ANYTHING, don't be afraid to hit us
back up.
Ahanu observes the arm and is in awe, but not at the size of
the arm.
AHANU
Who gets a puppy for their first
tatt?
Nayati backs away from the arm to get a better look. He looks
up at James.
NAYATI
What do you think...?
JAMES
Whoa! You're good.
(to Toe-Toe)
Look boy, it's you.
JAMES (CONT'D)
Wait a second, it's not gonna jump
off my arm and start barking is it?
Nayati smiles.
NAYATI
Nah, you're good. Maybe when you
come back, I can do an entire
sleeve to put towards the loan you
gave me.
JAMES
NO THANK YOU. One is good enough
for me. Besides, I'll be set for
the next few decades.
(pause)
I figured me and my friend can ride
off into the sunset.
AHANU
Hol' up James. I've heard of white
people being close to their pets,
but really?
JAMES
Not Toe-Toe, Winema.
AHANU
Oh snap! So you done tied the knot.
That's what's up.
Ahanu walks over and gives James some dap. He looks at his
watch, then looks at Nayati.
AHANU (CONT'D)
Speaking of tieing the knot... Bruh
you better get a move on.
NAYATI (CONT'D)
Lock up for me will ya!
James and Winema hold hands on the front row of the assembly.
Nayati and Teneca stand at a distance from the man, and they
are on separate sides from each other in the back; waiting.
The man with the flute joins in with the drum beat and the
couple begin their walk to the altar. The Native American
crowd observes them in great respect.
LIWANU
We are gathered here today to join
these two in eternal covenant and
honor our long heritage...
LIWANU (CONT'D)
This heirloom has been passed down
for generations. The two spouts
represent two lives. The bridge at
the top of it signifies their lives
as one...
LIWANU (CONT'D)
It was said that if the couple
could drink from the vase at the
same time a good understanding and
cooperation would dwell in their
mist forever.
(pause)
Please drink as a pledge to your
bond today...
The couple tilt the vase back and lean down together and the
liquid fills their mouths; not one drop falls.
LIWANU (CONT'D)
Above are the stars of heaven and
below are the stones of earth. May
your love be forever bright and
unbreakably solid.
(pause)
Trouble will come but as long as
the Great Spirit guides you, there
is nothing to fear. The eternal
bond of peace covers your union...
Liwanu grabs a beautifully woven blanket and covers them
both.
LIWANU (CONT'D)
You two entered here on separate
paths, but this is a symbol that
they have both met as one.
Nayati and Teneca lean in for a sweet kiss. When their lips
meet a drop of rain plops on their faces. They look up and
several drops begin to follow.
97.
The small crowd welcomes the rain with smiles but take cover
to the church building.
Nayati runs into the building and sees the wedding cake on
the table and the decorated Seminole colors. He observes the
walls pictures of Native American chiefs that have progressed
through the years. One particular picture holds deeper value;
Sani and Yaholo make his eyes a little misty.
AHANU (O.S.)
Bruh! You finally done it!
AHANU (CONT'D)
The real O.G.'s.
AHANU (CONT'D)
Say bruh, come see me perform
tonight.
NAYATI
You think you're ready?
AHANU
Come and see.
OWNER
What's up party people! It's that
time of the night where we touch
your special spot, your funny bone!
OWNER (CONT'D)
We have a local that wants to give
it another try. Show him some love
as he comes! Give it up for Ahanu
Minowah!
NAYATI (O.S.)
You got this, BRUH!
Ahanu smiles.
AHANU
Have ya'll heard the one 'bout
walking eagle?
(pause)
When Biden made an appearance
before the Chiefs, they called him
Geh-ton-A-mish. Oh dude smiled and
asked the translator what that
mean?
(pause)
Translator said, it means you're a
walking eagle. Biden said, but
eagles can fly?
(pause)
Translator said, but you're full of
shit, so you can't.
THE END
