Sources of Noise Pollution
Major Sources of Noise Pollution
 Traffic
 Biggest source of noise pollution
 Land traffic: vehicles, rails etc.
 Air traffic: airplanes
 Water traffic: ships
 Industries
 Machinery
 Domestic Noise
 Music
 Loud TVs and radios
 Animals
 Annoying people

Sources of Noise Pollution
Roadway Noise
 Level of noise i s a function of volume, type of vehicle, and speed
 In the city, the main sources of traffic noise are the motors and
exhaust system of autos, smaller trucks, buses, and motorcycles
 This type of noise can be amplified by narrow streets and tall
buildings in which traffic noise reverberates
 Types of pavements also affect noise pollution
 Solution
 Regulations
 Limit the amount of noise some vehicles can produce
 Some regulations require vehicles to be properly operated and
maintained

Mirpur Institute of Technology, MUST 32

Sources of Noise Pollution
Roadway Noise
 Solution
 Barriers
 Buffer zones
 Earth berms/wooden fences/concrete walls
 Vegetation (if dense enough)

Buffer Zone
Sources of Noise Pollution
Airport Noise
 Now-a-days low flying military aircraft and aircraft operations over
national parks, wilderness areas , and other areas previously
unaffected by aircraft noise has added a new dimension to
community annoyance

Construction Noise Pollution

 The noise from the construction of highways , city streets , and
buildings i s amajor contributor to the urban scene

 Construction noise sources include pneumatic hammers, air

compressors, bulldozers, loaders, dump trucks (and their back-
up signals), and pavement breakers

Mirpur Institute of Technology, MUST 8

Sources of Noise Pollution
Industry Noise
 Although industrial noise i s one of the less prevalent community
noise problems, neighbors of noisy manufacturing plants can be
disturbed by sources such as fans, motors, and compressors
mounted on the outside of buildings

 Interior noise can also be transmitted to the community through

open windows and doors, and eventhrough buildingwalls

 These interior noise sources have significant impacts on

industrial workers, among whom noise- induced hearing loss i s
unfortunately common

Mirpur Institute of Technology, MUST 9

Sources of Noise Pollution
Building Noise Pollution
 Apartment residents are often annoyed by noise in their homes,
internal building noise from plumbing, boilers, generators, air
conditioners, and fans

 Improperly insulated walls and ceilings can reveal amplified

music, voices, footfalls and noisy activities from neighboring units

 External noise from emergency vehicles, traffic, refuse collection,

and other city noises can be a problem for urban residents,
especially when windows are open

Mirpur Institute of Technology, MUST 10

Effects of Noise Pollution
 According to the USEPA, there are direct links between noise and
health

 Nois e pollution can damage phys iological and ps ychological

health

 S leep dis r uption (continuous nois e in excess of 30 dB dis turbs

sleep)

 Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL)

 Cardiovascular diseases

 Mental Health Disturbances

 Negative Social Behavior

Solutions to Noise
Pollution
 Planting bus hes and trees in and around s ound
generating sources is an effective solution for noise pollution

 Regular s ervicing and tuning of automobiles can effectively

reduce the noise pollution

 Buildings can be designed with s uitable nois e abs or bing

material for the walls, windows, and ceilings

 Workers should be provided with equipment such as ear plugs

and earmuffs for hearing protection

 S imilar to automobiles, lubr ication of the machinery and

servicing should be done to minimize noise generation.

 Soundpr oof door s and windows can be ins talled to block

unwanted noise from outside.
Mirpur Institute of Technology, MUST 12
Solutions to Noise
Pollution
 Regulations s hould be impos ed to restr ict the us age of play
loudspeakers in crowded areas and public places.

 Factor ies and indus tr ies s hould be located far fr om

the residential areas

 Community development or urban management should be

done with long-term planning, along with an aim to reduce
noise pollution

 Social awareness programs should be taken up to educate the

public about the causes and effects of noise pollution
