English as the Only Global Language

Good day judges, teachers and my fellow friends, I’m Jaskeerrat Kaur, I’m 14 years old and
I’m studying in Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Dato’ Bijaya Setia. I’m here to talk about an
interesting topic that is English as the only global language. What does it mean by global
language? Simply means ,a language that makes it possible for members of different
language communities to communicate. So what I need my audience to understand that, it
is often said that “losing a language means losing a culture”. I strongly disagree with this
statement….Why? As you can tell, isn’t it exciting to learn a new language….days and days
pass and the more and more you learn about it.. the easier for you it gets to speak like a
native? Isn’t it true?
So as we know in this era the English language is getting more and more popular it’s
because people now days watch many English movies especially like those superheroes like
of course, Spiderman, superman, batman, avengers, etc. This is truly one of the reasons
people will start to learn English as they engage with the movie the characters playing their
role and they speak English. That does makes sense right. Another exciting thing is people
gradually learn English by hearing this now day’s pop, hip hop, rock English music. As you
know famous singers like Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez and many more creates good English
music. No joke, this literally can be one of the reason why people learn the English language
today.
Furthermore, the growth of English has effect on trading that will increase between
countries. In order to prove this right, these days, have you seen a business trading using
the language Spanish, Arabic, German? Honestly no right…? The fact that English is widely
spoken in other countries,And different countries have different native languages has been
documented in numerous studies as reducing international trade. This paper investigates
the possibility that trade partners with no common native language will overcome the
language barrier by communicating in a non-native language. Also, speaking the same
language as your business partner will have a positive effect on the negotiations.
Besides, People will be brought closer if English as the only global language. Now you're
pretty unsure what does it means? Speaking English will help you communicate with
people from countries all over the world, not just English-speaking ones, that applies
whether you're traveling, doing business, or communicating with others on social media.
Having a good understanding of communicating in English makes it easier to travel around
the globe. Because it is the main international common language for foreigners, knowing
English makes it easy to get assistance and help in many parts of the world. This creates a
good bonding between people.
Moreover, it will have a beneficial effect on communication between people from different
countries. Although English is not one of the most spoken language in the world, it is the
official language in 53 countries and is spoken as a first language by around 400 million
people worldwide. But that’s not all, it is also the most common second language in the
world. According to the British Council, by 2020 about two billion people in the world will be
studying English. Therefore, it is highly a great chance that if you meet someone from
another country, you will both be able to speak English. It gives you an open door to the
world and helps you communicate with global citizens. Woww..wonderful
In addition, language plays a crucial role in causing and resolving conflicts. The manipulation
of language in communication can often strengthen group solidarity. As highlighted English
is widely spoken in many countries, political conflict can be avoided too because they have
the same spoken language as each other when making a decision to maintain their country
for peace and harmony.
Last but not least, English have a great impact on Science and technology. Lately, they have
been used to help people in various areas of life. Accordingly, English has held firm role in
technology and science. Therefore, it could be widely used as language of these two in many
aspects and related icons. Throughout the world, it is clear that almost all universities use
English as the main language of their academic process particularly in the field of sciences,
medicine, and engineering, because most of their materials or resources are only available
in English and all academic institutions have regarded it as the medium language of science.
To sum up, English as The language of Social Media. As we all know, there are many other
types of social media outlets extremely present in the current times in which English has
played a great role. Twitter is one of the obvious examples of them that operates almost the
same way as Facebook in getting people interact, which began to commence in 2006.
Twitter is utilized for a quicker reading and writing tweets, letting limited character space.
Thus, a huge number of twitter users tend to use English as the main language of the
Twitter, because tweeting in English is more convenient than any other language to the
default rules of twitter and they can make a tweet that give a complete idea. I personally
one of the active users of twitter that I always write tweets in English rather than my mother
language and it is the same for all my friends from different cities. This is a very good
example of introducing English as the only global language.
Languages and cultures have always undergone changes, this is natural and cannot be
stopped. In a globalized world, we have to be open-minded and accept these changes. They
can also be seen as positive influences on our native culture and attitudes. Rather a gain
than a loss. New words enrich our language, do not replace native words, but offer more
choices. Thank you very much.
