INTRODUCTION
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is one of the technological trends which are relevant to be developed for
any purpose (Fitria, 2023). Artificial Intelligence is a technology that is undergoing rapid development
(AI). Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) is a field of computer science devoted to solving cognitive problems
that are generally related to human intelligence, such as learning, problem-solving, and pattern
recognition (Fitria, 2021). A.I. technology is not only used for serious things but also for fun and helps
our daily life. Job automation, algorithm bias, and technological developments are the first thoughts
that come to our minds when we think of Artificial Intelligence. But at the same time, A.I. can be used
in many fun and exciting ways. As the name implies, artificial intelligence is artificial intelligence that
is created thanks to technological sophistication. A.I. can help humans do various things, which is
why it is often nicknamed 'adopting human intelligence'.
Fitria (2021b) states that the technology was developed to facilitate human activities and
productivity. Artificial Intelligence or artificial intelligence is a technology that can make computer
systems, software, and even robots work and 'think' like humans. Apart from having a positive impact,
the presence of A.I. can also have a negative impact, especially on the work done by humans. A.I. is
a human intelligence simulation based on computers and designed to function as human beings (Fitria,
2021). Some answer using humans and utilize machines to automatically respond to questions
presented by humans (Maitri, 2019). The popularity of Artificial Intelligence continues to increase
across numerous industrial platforms, with Chatbot technology becoming essential (Luo et al., 2019;
Wei et al., 2018). It is a software application that uses natural language processing (NLP) and deep
learning techniques to conduct text-based online chat conversations (Dharani et al., 2020).
Communication between a human and a computer has been of interest to numerous researchers for
decades (Thorat & Jadhav, 2020).
The significance of chatbots that can engage with humans using natural language has increased.
This is owing to the availability of computational means for natural language interaction between
computers and humans that are becoming increasingly similar to human interaction (Bozic et al.,
2019). Consequently, there are an increasing number of chatbots designed to assist people with
organizing work or making decisions. There are various methods for performing human-computer
communication. In the era of conversational services, Chatbots are the next big thing in the modern
era of technology. (Lalwani et al., 2018) Chatbots are intelligent systems being developed using
artificial intelligence (A.I.) and natural language processing (NLP) algorithms.
Chatbots have gained popularity as a means to conduct such conversations. A chatbot is a computer
application that facilitates and enhances this conversation. Chatterbot (also known as chatbot or bots)
is a computer program designed to balance intellectuals with one or more humans, both audio and
text (Falah & Syamsidar, 2021; Haristiani, 2019). Chatbots, or artificially intelligent conversational
tools, are the newest tools meant to facilitate communication between humans and computers (Nghi
et al., 2019). Chatbots are text-based conversational agents in simulating conversations with users
(Ashfaq et al., 2020). Besides, Chatbot provides numerous school, university, or college-related and
student-specific pieces of information (Patel et al., 2019).
The rapid development of A.I. technology has increased the accessibility, scalability, and
efficacy of text generation tools such as GPT-3 and ChatGP (Zhou et al., 2022). ChatGPT is the idea
of the San Francisco, California-based AI company OpenAI (Stokel-Walker, 2022). The business
released GPT-3 in 2020, a sort of artificial intelligence known as a big language model that generates
text by sifting through billions of words of training data and understanding the relationships between
words and phrases. GPT-3 is at the forefront of an A.I. revolution, provoking philosophical debates
about its boundaries and a multitude of potential uses, such as summarizing legal texts and assisting
computer programmers. ChatGPT is derived from an enhanced version of GPT-3 and is optimized
for user interaction.
ChatGPT, the most recent version of a natural-language system was published on 30 November
2022 (Castelvecchi, 2022). The platform was released by OpenAI. OpenAI is a non-profit research
company engaged in the development and direction of artificial intelligence (A.I.). OpenAI was
founded by two techpreneurs, Sam Altman and Elon Musk. The two company founders and other
investors, started the company in 2015 in San Francisco, California, with a $1 billion endowment.
OpenAI is a non-profit research company engaged in the development and direction of artificial
intelligence (A.I.). Thus, artificial intelligence technology can benefit humanity as a whole, launches
Tech Target. OpenAI itself is a company engaged in the development of artificial intelligence. It is
well-known products are DALL-E and GPT. DALL-E is an A.I. that can produce an image or

painting from a sentence, while GPT is an A.I. that produces text. GPT allows A.I. to create texts
ranging from poetry, articles, and tutorials, to social media captions. Apart from that, this A.I.
intelligence can also make a general knowledge of a statement or prompt.
OpenAI is a non-profit research company engaged in the development and direction of artificial
intelligence (A.I.). This institution conducts research in the field of A.I. to promote and develop A.I.
that can be useful for humans. The background to the establishment of this company was due to the
founder's concern regarding the negative potential due to carelessness and misuse of A.I. The
company's long-term goals lie in fundamental advances and capabilities of A.I. itself. The positive
intention of establishing OpenAI is reflected in the product as well as the company's work system.
OpenAI collaborates freely with other research organizations and individuals. Not only working
together but research results and patents made by companies are also kept open to the public. Thus, it
can avoid its use which has a negative impact on safety.
ChatGPT is software in the form of a generative language that uses technology to predict the
next sentence or word in a conversation or a text command. Simply put, ChatGPT is a chatbot, a
computer program in the form of a virtual robot that can simulate human-like conversations. Even
though it is still a prototype, this dialogue-based A.I. chatbot is considered capable of responding to
natural human language and responding to it automatically. This platform is considered to be able to
replace Google because it can answer any problem. ChatGPT from OpenAI can answer difficult
questions with comprehensive answers. Therefore, ChatGPT has extraordinary intelligence compared
to other chatbots. ChatGPT OpenAI is a model of InstructGPT, which is trained to quickly follow
instructions and provide detailed responses. Interestingly, ChatGPT from OpenAI is designed to
remember questions that have been asked before and can correct themselves according to feedback.
There are several previous studies related to chatbots. There are currently numerous cloud-based
Chatbot services accessible (Rahman et al., 2017). Fadhil & Gabrielli (2017) states that Chatbots are
an innovative strategy that simplifies and facilitates long-term commitment to health promotion
programs. Benedictus et al. (2017) state that the Chatbot Helpdesk application can help users by
answering questions about the use of applications in the Sam Ratulangi University Integrated
Information System. Astuti & Fatchan (2019) and Hakim et al. (2020) state that chatbot applications
can handle questions, provide answers and act as customer services. It is supported by Chen et al.
(2021) state that the chatbot's usability had a good effect on the extrinsic values of customer
experience, while its responsiveness had a favorable effect on the intrinsic values of customer
experience. While Nugraha & Sebastian (2021) states that Chatbots can be used for companies or
institutions that do not have specific resources to handle this work to question and answer services.
Kadaton & Soekarta (2019) state that line chatbot service is a medium for delivering information on
tourist attractions that can be interactive. Then, Melindah (2020) states that the Mobile Spare Parts
Information Chatbot application is useful for facilitating communication between humans and
computers in terms of searching for information, so buyers can find out about cellphone spare parts
by asking questions to Chatbot. Stoilova (2021) states that chatbots give benefit businesses, employees,
and customers by providing rapid support and automating repetitive tasks. Based on the previous
studies above, it shows that Chatbot can be used in any various purposes, such as to promote program,
promote business. Besides, Chatbot as as helpdesk information, and customer service.
Netizens created various content created using the OpenAI GPT Chat. After being launched
last week, the artificial intelligence-driven ChatGPT platform has amassed over a million users in a
matter of days. Even so, ChatGPT also gave rise to various debates and controversies that sparked
online discussions about its benefits and potential harms. Discussions about the ChatGPT bot were
launched, and it immediately became popular and received a lot of attention. This is also the success
of OpenAI, as a service developer. One of OpenAI's artificial intelligence, ChatGPT, has become a
hot topic of discussion on social media Twitter. Twitter users are excited about ChatGPT's ability to
answer all questions flexibly. The point is, ChatGPT can understand the context of a conversation
and give answers according to context so that even though ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence, its
technology is not as rigid as a robot. One of the Twitter accounts that reviews ChatGPT through a
thread is @huedaya. In his thread @huedaya explained what ChatGPT is, he also did some trials.

46
Tira Nur Fitria | ELT Forum 12(1) (2023)

Figure 1. A thread taken from @huedaya's post on Twitter

Based on @huedaya's post, the first try was carried out by giving several tricky questions to ask
to correct English grammar or grammar in a lift format complete with error reasons. He tested
ChatGPT to correct English grammar. Second try: He tried giving a sentence that had a grammatical
error and asked A.I. to decipher the error. ChatGPT seems to be able to find the correct statement
which is E. Interestingly, not only did the answer but also the A.I. gives reasons why each answer
could be right or wrong. ChatGPT also managed to find some mistakes in his writing completing with
error reasons. The researcher is interested to know about Chatbot, especially in education. Therefore,
the objective of this study is to describe the use of ChatBot in the English learning process.

METHODS
This research uses a descriptive qualitative method. Qualitative methods emphasize more on
observing phenomena and examining the substance of the meaning of these phenomena. The analysis
and acumen of qualitative research are greatly affected by the strength of the words and sentences
used. Qualitative research is typically not directed by a hypothesis (Privitera & Ahlgrim-Delzell, 2018),
thereby emphasizing the absence of the use of statistical tools in qualitative research. In this research,
the researcher describes the use of ChatGPT in the teaching and learning process.
This research uses documents and observation. A document is any recordable or retrievable
symbolic representation that may be analyzed (Altheide & Schneider, 2013). The type of document
used is taken from the Twitter post named @huedaya related to ChatGPT. Besides, the research also
uses observation. The researcher should visit the research site to observe how they (research elements)
behave (Memory, 2021). In this research, the researcher simulates the use of ChatGPT related to
English learning.
The method of analyzing data in this research is by using three steps of qualitative analysis as
proposed by Miles et al. (2018) including data reduction, data display, and conclusion. In the
reduction stage, the researcher removes unnecessary data so that the data can produce appropriate
information. At the display stage, the researcher presents data in the form of pictures or narrative text
to make it easy to understand. Next, the researcher looks for the meaning of the data collected by
looking for relationships, similarities, or differences to conclude answers to existing problems.

FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION

Findings
This platform ChatBot has gone viral on Twitter related to its ability to provide comprehensive written
information. One user who tried this artificial intelligence platform even said finding information on
ChatGPT was easier than Googling. On social media, many people share stories about using
ChatGPT to write code, draft blog posts, write academic essays, and compile work reports. The
researcher also tried to use ChatGPT to see how the experience provided by this artificial intelligence
platform. OpenAI stated that the ChatGPT model was trained using a machine learning technique
called Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF). The A.I. technology embedded in
this platform focuses on making it easier for users. The user interface is that of a simple instant
messaging application. We can simply type our question or command into the text box and ChatGPT

Discussion
Recent developments in Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) and machine learning have opened the path for
the expanding use of chatbots in language learning (Belda-Medina & Calvo-Ferrer, 2022). With the
development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the field of education to help process daily activities
including teaching and learning (Fitria, 2021a). Good English skills will certainly be a competitive
capital, both in the fields of education and work. Chatbot technology is a technology that can be used
as a solution to problems in the educational sphere. Several studies have proven the use of chatbots as
learning media, especially in learning English (Afrianto et al., 2019). Chatbot technology can be an
interactive learning media solution, one of which is as a medium for practicing English conversation
while through the two conversation modes provided, users can practice both spoken and written
conversations, and with the existing error correction features and self-evaluation features that can help
users improve their English conversation skills.
This artificial intelligence (A.I.) based conversation platform has attracted the admiration of
many netizens because of its ability to answer questions automatically, quickly, and in detail. A GPT
chatbot is a software application designed to emulate human-like conversations based on user
requests. Artificial intelligence technology in it can understand human natural language and produce
written text that is similar to human creation. The platform was just released at the end of last month.
However, in just a little over a week, the number of ChatGPT users has reached more than 1 million.
As we know, ChatGPT has suddenly become the talk of the social media world. In fact, on Twitter
itself, many people talk about how ChatGPT is capable of producing text in various formats—be it
formal, informal, or creative writing. Its ability to write is human-like in terms of content, coherence,
and style of language. Since the ChatGPT prototype became available for public testing in late
November, many people have been amazed by the program's ability to think and generate text.
ChatGPT is released by OpenAI, which is based in San Francisco. In simple terms, the
ChatGPT chatbot is an A.I. that can answer all user questions, with the most satisfying answers. This
52
Tira Nur Fitria | ELT Forum 12(1) (2023)

software application is designed to emulate human-like conversations based on requests from users.
ChatGPT is trained using a machine learning technique called Reinforcement Learning from Human
Feedback (RLHF). This learning technique allows ChatGPT to simulate dialogue, answer questions
in context, admit mistakes, challenge wrong premises, and reject inappropriate requests. In early
development, A.I. was even trained directly by human A.I. trainers, by testing the two sides of the
chatbot as both a user and an A.I. assistant. In short, this machine can respond to questions with in-
depth answers just like human-written text in a conversational format. Previous A.I. technology could
only literally answer questions without considering the context of the conversation that was going on.
ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence (A.I.) language model developed by OpenAI, a company
engaged in the development of A.I. technology. ChatGPT is a chatbot based on GPT-3.5, a natural
language model that uses deep learning processes. Natural here means the style of text produced by
OpenAI's chat robot, which is similar to a natural human writing style, not rigid like a machine or bot.
Like chatbots in general, ChatGPT made by OpenAI allows users to send questions or instructions
which ChatGPT will respond to later. Currently, ChatGPT also supports Indonesian, so that users
can submit and receive responses in Indonesian. Interestingly, ChatGPT from OpenAI is designed to
remember questions that have been asked before and can correct themselves according to the feedback
provided by the user. However, the questions asked should not be over the line. This is because
ChatGPT is also trained to reduce inappropriate questions from users. So far, OpenAI has only opened
the bot for beta testing and evaluation. Meanwhile, new API access will be available next year.
ChatGPT is the latest model chatbot from GPT (Generative Pre-Trained Transformer) which
is included in the OpenAI text-generating artificial intelligence platform. ChatGPT has a working
system like DALL-E that uses machine learning and algorithms to make users feel like they are
messaging real people. By leveraging ChatGPT, we can ask countless questions and will often get
helpful answers. The chatbot is currently in "research preview" status, which means that the public is
allowed to use the platform for free while the company gathers information about user experience.
There are several features in ChatGPT Open A.I. They are question answers, solving math equations,
writing text (basic academic articles, literary texts, film scripts, etc.), debugging and fixing (for
example, detecting and fixing errors in any code block), translation between languages, summarize
text and detect keywords in the text, classification, and make recommendations.
ChatGPT engine can simulate dialogue, answer follow-up questions, admit mistakes, challenge
faulty premises, and reject inappropriate requests. Early development involved a human A.I. trainer
providing a conversational model with development from both sides - the user and the A.I. assistant.
The version of the bot available for public testing attempts to understand questions asked by users and
responds with in-depth answers that resemble human-written text in a conversational format. Tools
like ChatGPT can be used in real-world applications such as digital marketing, online content
creation, answering customer service questions, or as some users have found, even to help debug code.
Even though the chatbot service uses English, users can also write questions in Indonesian. The
answers given are also following grammar that is easy to understand.
Several users who have accessed this platform state that ChatGPT is an alternative to the
Google search engine. The platform is even capable of providing descriptions, answers, and solutions
to complex questions. ChatGPT can help users create content for websites, answer customer
questions, provide recommendations, and create automated chatbots. As if that was not enough, the
app allows writing lines of code, short essays, and even pieces of music. OpenAI admits that ChatGPT
can give completely wrong answers, and even present wrong information as fact. They stated that this
problem was also still difficult to fix. On the other hand, there is speculation that ChatbotGPT will
make jobs related to content production, from writers, journalists, and academics, to programmers,
irrelevant. That can happen because of the application's ability to produce written text that is similar
to the results of human writing (and thoughts). However, at least until now, these chatbots have
limitations in that they lack an understanding of the context, critical thinking skills, and the ability to
make ethical decisions. On the other hand, A.I. technology as a whole runs the risk of perpetuating
societal biases such as race, gender, and culture. Tech giants like Alphabet Inc. parent of Google and
Amazon.com (AMZN.O), have previously acknowledged some of their projects experimenting with
A.I. are "ethically uncertain" and have limitations. In some companies, humans have to step in and
fix A.I. havoc. Despite these concerns, A.I. research remains exciting.
In using ChatGPT, users just have to access the official OpenAI website. From there, all they
have to do is select the 'Try ChatGPT' option, then log in to start asking questions. So, users don't
need to install applications from Google Play or the App Store. 1. Open the site

53
Tira Nur Fitria | ELT Forum 12(1) (2023)

https://chat.openai.com on a P.C./laptop or smartphone. 2. Next, log in before using ChatGPT. 3.

If you don't have an account, you can register using email or directly use a Google account 4. After
success, please enter a question or statement in the existing conversation column 5. Finally, send it
and within 1 to 2 seconds, ChatGPT will send a response. With its very high popularity, it is reported
that since the first day ChatGPT was launched, more than one million users have tried to use the A.I.
service.
At first glance, the use of ChatGPT is not much different from the Google search engine
because users can type or ask anything on ChatGPT. However, before using it, you need an account
first which can be registered on the chat.openai.com page. If we don't want to register an account with
ChatGPT OpenAI, we can also log in using the Google or Microsoft account that you already have.
After that, you are asked to enter a phone number to register with OpenAI as well as get a confirmation
number. Then, you will be informed of several rules, from how OpenAI collects data, to how users
send feedback. 1. Visit the page https://chat.openai.com/ 2. We will be asked to log in if you already
have an account or sign up if you don't (you need to verify your cellphone number to register). 3. If
we have just registered, you will be redirected to the https://beta.openai.com/overview page. Return
to page https://chat.openai.com/ 4. We only need to type a command on the main page to give
ChatGPT a write command, for example, "Write about Indonesia." 5. ChatGPT will immediately
provide information according to the command given. If ChatGPT has no information regarding the
given command or question, then the system will provide the most relevant information.
The development of artificial intelligence (A.I.) has indeed been very rapid in recent years. The
implementation is also very broad, including making a bot that is ready to be chatted with. One of
them is a dialogue-based A.I. called ChatGPT which was recently released. This bot was developed
by OpenAI which of the course focuses its research on artificial intelligence. What makes ChatGPT
special is the use of GPT-3.5 natural language generation technology. This technology allows later
users to have friendly conversations with the A.I. OpenAI has developed this new generation of A.I.
with strong restrictions on the possibility of abusive or hurtful conversations. The good news, users
can try this ChatGPT for free now.
GPT allows A.I. to create any text. Apart from that, this A.I. intelligence can also make a
general knowledge of a statement or prompt. Using ChatGPT, we click on URL and the register for
an OpenAI account using an active email address and register or log in to our OpenAI account. At
the bottom of the screen, we can see a type box in the ChatGPT interface. Type whatever we want to
know to start chatting with ChatGPT. ChatGPT is software in the form of a generative language that
uses technology to predict the next sentence or word in a conversation or a text command. ChatGPT
from OpenAI can answer difficult questions with comprehensive answers. Therefore, ChatGPT has
extraordinary intelligence compared to other chatbots.
The dialogue format allows ChatGPT to answer follow-up questions, admit mistakes, challenge
wrong premises, and reject inappropriate requests. Users can simply visit the ChatGPT website and
log in using their OpenAI account. After that, users can directly chat with the bot, or rather give orders
or questions. ChatGPT has a structured conversation system so that users can ask the A.I. to write
poetry, correct coding errors with detailed examples, write new code, make orders for AI-based
artwork, and various other algorithms. It should be understood that ChatGPT is made more like a
digital library or an intelligent answering machine. ChatGPT cannot answer questions that are
evaluative or subjective. ChatGPT will also refuse to answer questions that lead to negative topics.
Thus, users will not be able to ask or instruct ChatGPT to talk about hate speech, violent content, etc.
There are several advantages provided by ChatGPT to a variety of users (Haque et al., 2022).
However, because it is a new technology, understanding early adopters' feelings is crucial for several
reasons. First off, early adopters are frequently the most enthusiastic and influential consumers of a
product, and their views and feelings can influence how the general public perceives new technology.
This data can offer crucial insights into the product's likelihood of success or failure. The OpenAI
ChatGPT chatbot can respond to a query with prose that appears astonishingly smart (Frye, 2022).
Perlman & Open A.I.’s Assistant (2022) explain that ChatGPT emphasizes the potential of artificial
intelligence, particularly it's capacity to change our lives in a variety of ways, from the subtle to the
profound. Many individuals may afraid that A.I. text generators like ChatGPT will pose a significant
difficulty for educators, as it will soon be hard for them to distinguish between student and AI-
generated texts.
Currently, technology has become a threat to the world of education, where theft of ideas and
plagiarism is increasingly easy to do. Perhaps the threat is ChatGPT, a program created by the

Microsoft-backed company OpenAI that can shape arguments and write convincing English essays.
Technology has raised widespread concerns that students will use software to cheat on written
assignments. What is needed right now is a better way to evaluate students in the future. Lecturers
and universities recommend that students handwrite or use typewriters to avoid cheating. This further
strengthens the argument that artificial intelligence technology, in the hands of the wrong people, will
make students lazy to ‘think’ and write based on their ability. With this application, maybe plagiarism
will continue to exist and develop unless we as educators instill the values of integrity and respect.
More than that, understand that technology is not made to commit fraud, but to make life easier.
There are many other interesting innovations driven by A.I., but not without a doubt.
ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence technology that leverages language and is trained using millions
of data points, including text and books. This technology produces convincing and coherent writing
for questions by predicting the next plausible word in a word sequence, but often the answers are less
than accurate and require fact-checking. OpenAI acknowledges the tendency for tools to respond with
answers that sound reasonable but are wrong, a problem that has been deemed difficult to fix. Despite
the many concerns originating from A.I., the ChatGPT chatbot has been successful in attracting the
public's attention. Like many AI-driven innovations, ChatGPT is may not perfect. Unfortunately, this
ChatGPT still has many limitations. OpenAI admits that sometimes answers from machines sound
reasonable when they are wrong. It still needs constant improvement. A.I. technology also has the
potential to be 'insensitive' or biased in sensitive matters in society such as race, gender, and culture.
Because the A.I. technology itself has only been trained since 2021, there are also many gaps in this
A.I., including explaining a topic inaccurately. But ChatGPT has a very long future. Likewise, the
potential of its ability is said to be useful for various fields in the future. OpenAI acknowledges that
the app has a tendency to come up with answers that "sound reasonable, but are incorrect or illogical".
The problem is a challenge that must be resolved. In addition, artificial intelligence technology can
also continue social biases, for example, biases in race, gender, and culture.

CONCLUSION
Using ChatBot is easy. We can access ChatGPT on https://openai.com/ or
https://chat.openai.com/ on the browser. We will be asked to log in before using ChatGPT. If we do
not have an account, we can register via email or a Google or Microsoft account. After successfully
logging in, enter a question or statement in the conversation column provided. Next, send it and
ChatGPT will respond and the answer appears quickly in a split second. The user says "Can you help
me in doing my English assignment?", ChatBot replies "Of course! I'd be happy to help you with your
English assignment. What do you need help with? Do you have a specific question or task that you're
working on, or is there a broader topic that you'd like help with? It would be helpful to have some
more information so that I can better understand how I can assist you". Based on several tries,
ChatGPT can answer all user questions on various topics such as English essays including “descriptive
text about Solo, My Family, personal experience, an unforgettable moment during the trip, resolution
on 2023 to be an English teacher, and future career to be a good English translator”.
One of the famous products from OpenAI is GPT Chat. This chatbot uses advanced AI
technology to understand questions and provide accurate answers. These chatbots can be used to help
find information, answer questions, or even just chat with friends. One of the famous products from
