Butyl alcohol 18 000 lb/hr and 170°F is cooled at 140°F with cooling Orthoxylene heated from 100°F at 150°F

in a shell and tube heat exchanger. Available for this duty is a shelland-tube exchanger having 196 tubes in a
21.25-in ID shell. There are two passes on the shell side and two passes on the tube side. The baffles are 20%
cut segmental type and are spaced at 5.5-in intervals. Take the specific heats of alcohol is 0.7 Btu/(lb-°F) and
orthoxylene is 0.43 Btu/(lb-°F). The exchanger has 14 ft steel tubes with 1in O.D. with BWG 15. The tubes are
on a 1.15 in triangular pitch. The thermal conductivity of stainless steel is 25.9 Btu/(ft-hr-°F). The alcohol will
flow though the tube. Estimate:

Evidence 1
a) The heat load for the heat exchanger
b) The ΔTLMTD and correction factor
c) Area of the heat exchanger

Evidence 2
d) The overall heat transfer coefficient required
e) The overall heat transfer coefficient clean
f) The overall heat transfer coefficient fouling
g) Will the exchanger be thermally suitable for this service?
