1. Please explain the eight (8) key soft skills that are part of graduate attributes at
BINUS University.
There are a variety of soft skills that are part of BINUS University graduate attributes.
Here is the list of them so far:
1) Digital and Technology Fluency:
The ability to operate technological tools, software and/or applications to create,
design, and develop various results, from virtual projects, blueprints, to real
products. In every single working environment where it needs technological tools
for the company to work, especially IT-based companies, it is required to be tech-
savvy and able to handle new devices and platforms.
2) Social Awareness:
The ability to gain awareness towards their surroundings such as their fellow
colleagues or workmates. Learning every single person background, personality
and their workstyle is needed. Social awareness also needs empathy, to recognize
and analyze other behaviors.
3) Initiative:
The will to start without relying on someone to trigger oneself for being
motivated or ordered to do something. The individual must have the desire to be
ambitious when achieving certain goals or choosing important decisions.
4) Adaptability:
The ability to adapt in any circumstances and working environments. For the
individual to be able to adapt easily in various situations, one must have the
willingness to learn and bear with the harsh conditions that are outside of their
comfort zone and learn unknown skills or knowledge they’re lacking.
5) Critical and Creative Thinking:
The ability to generate new unique ideas by analyzing and evaluating new
information. By having this ability, an individual can increase their creativity with
their ideas and apply critical mindset for jobs that require massive amounts of
brainstorming and idealize original concepts.
6) Growth Mindset:
The ability to cultivate skills to analyze strengths and weaknesses of oneself.
Enough self-reflection will develop self-control towards impulsive actions and
increase mental strength when faced with such problems, along with increasing
self-discipline for proper lifestyle.
7) Applied Management Skills:
The ability to manage effective communication and planning a structured and
systematic strategy in the working environment, both team planning and
individual planning. Applied management skills also apply to oneself through
time, budget, and workload management. Meanwhile management skills is the
key for teamwork, and correlates with leadership for managing their teammates.
8) Collaboration:
The process of working together with different individuals, divisions, or teams
either from the same company, third party companies or clients to achieve
sufficient goals and objectives. By collaborating with various people, it is
important to focus on the main objective while maintaining the rhythm of positive
synergy and communication for the whole party.
2. Among the eight (8) key soft skills, please choose and explain what key soft skills
that are needed to support you in completing your project /job/ business well!
Explanation should be supported by theory (theory can be obtained from
textbook references, journals, scienctific papers).
Based on my experience whilst doing the internship, there are a few of key soft skills
needed from graduate attributes that are mentioned above. Here are my top soft skills
that are crucial for completing my project:
1) Digital and Technology Fluency:
According to Niessen (2015), technological fluency means much more than the
ability to use technological tools; that would be equivalent to understanding a few
common phrases in a language. Meanwhile Niessen (2015) also stated that digital
fluency needs communication of both flowing aspects, which mostly articulates
on listening, writing, and speaking and understanding the language while
interpreting it. These attributes written from Niessen apply to my experience
when working in my company where I need to master certain applications such as
Adobe XD and Adobe Illustrator to work and finish my tasks due to my position
as an UI/UX Designer.
2) Adaptability:
Based on Kaplan (2023) statement, being an adaptable person in the workspace
will be able to keep up with moving priorities, clients, projects and other
important tasks in a workplace. Not only Kaplan, Yale (n.d) also disclose that
honing your skills into adaptability includes how fast can you respond to sudden
changes. Since I am working in an IT and outsourcing company where it deals
with various clients, adaptability skills are crucial for me to acclimate myself into
certain working environments, such as different workplace ethics and culture.
Without adaptability, I will have a hard time adjusting myself to meeting
environment and finishing up my tasks.
3) Initiative:
Initiative is an important ability, where you need to work and decide on your own
without often being told what to do, along with being resourceful to others
(Rawlings, 2022). “Initiative requires resilience and determination to take actions
when necessary.” (Rawlings, 2022). In other words, you need to have a main
drive trigger on your brain to achieve the goal (Rawlings, 2022). In my workplace
where I work, interns’ workload is a lot less than full-time employees, where in
some cases interns are subjected to be “a lot less helpful” due to lack of initiative.
I must have the ambition to ask my seniors or supervisor to give me tasks or ask
them if they need help on something. By taking the initiative, other workers will
change their perspective about interns and their attitude. In addition to increasing
my sole reputation in the workplace, being initiative includes bravery to ask for
help when I am struggling with certain tasks, also enabling myself to make my
own decision without waiting for my seniors or supervisor.
