Climate Crisis

Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns caused primarily by human activities like burning fossil fuels since the 1800s. As a result, the Earth is now 1.1°C warmer than in the late 1800s. Climate change is the defining crisis of our time and is happening more quickly than feared. However, it is a race we can win by taking steps like saving energy at home, eating more plants and less meat, and wasting less food. Performing the ritual of hawan as prescribed in ancient Hindu texts can also help purify the environment without releasing carbon into the air. Future generations will judge the present one harshly if we fail to address climate change.

Climate crisis- a race we can win

By apoorva arya

Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns.

These shifts may be natural, such as through variations in the solar cycle. But
since the 1800s, human activities have been the main driver of climate change,
primarily due to burning fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas. Burning fossil fuels
generates greenhouse gas emissions that act like a blanket wrapped around the
Earth, trapping the sun’s heat and raising temperatures. As a result, the Earth is
now about 1.1°C warmer than it was in the late 1800s. The last decade (2011-
2020) was the warmest on record.

Climate change is the defining crisis of our time and it is happening even more
quickly than we feared. But we are far from powerless in the face of this global
threat. “the climate emergency is a race we are losing, but it is a race we can win.

These ways can help limit climate change. From the way we travel, to the
electricity we use and the food we eat, we can make a difference

1. save energy at home

Much of our electricity and heat are powered by coal, oil, and gas. Use less
energy by lowering your heating and cooling, switching to LED light bulbs and
energy-efficient electric appliances, washing your laundry with cold water, or
hanging things to dry instead of using a dryer.

2. Eat more vegetables

Eating more vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds, and less
meat and dairy, can significantly lower your environmental impact. Producing
plant-based foods generally results in fewer greenhouse gas emissions and
requires less energy, land, and water.

3. throw away less food

When you throw food away, you're also wasting the resources and energy that
were used to grow, produce, package, and transport it. And when food rots in a
landfill, it produces methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. So use what you buy
and compost any leftovers.
And finally the most efficacious way to overcome this drastic crisis is “hawan”. As
prescribed in vedas since the beginning of this heavenly world performing the
ritual of hawan has always pured the environment and most importantly if done
in specific manners as written in vedas , it does not release and carbon(carbon
monoxide and carbon dioxide) in the air.

We are the first generation to be able to end poverty, and the last generation that can take teps to
avoid the worst impacts of climate change. Future generations will judge us harshly if we fail to
upload our moral and historical responsibilities.
