CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

The researchers believe that Oregano and lemongrass is one of the plants that is
used the most frequently around the world, as we all know. It can also be used as an
insecticide and food flavors. Oregano and other parts of the plant have been utilized for
medical purposes since the dawn of time. Certain substances found in oregano have
strong antimicrobial effects. Antioxidants, volatile oils, and other plant compounds
which are substances that aid in preventing the body's damaging free radicals from
doing harm, are abundant in oregano. The fragrant oil that keeps mosquitoes away is
made from lemongrass (also known as Cymbopogon). Despite research supporting
lemongrass oil's effectiveness as an insect repellent, it does need to be reapplied
frequently. Reapply lotions and sprays every 30 to 60 minutes to keep mosquitoes away
as effectively as possible.

Students, Parents, and even Health professionals are still struggling on how we
can prevent dengue specially in this time of pandemic. Oregano and Lemongrass has a
number of active chemicals that have been shown to be quite effective at keeping
mosquitoes away, therefore some studies claim that it works well as an insect repellent
and antiseptic. According to J Arthropod Borne (2018) oregano is 40% more effective
at repelling insects than other insect repellents that we typically purchase from stores.
Mosquitoes are primarily to blame for a number of safety risks due to their itchy bites,
and they also pose a health risk. These are to blame for the spread of dangerous illnesses
including malaria, dengue, yellow fever, chikungunya, etc. This different problem that
we are dealing with has been reported to several levels and nations. Science and
technology studies show that (2019) there are currently more than 100 countries that
are infecting 3,500 million people with mosquito-borne illnesses, and these infections
are responsible for many deaths globally. Everywhere it infests, the mosquito has an
impact on people of all social classes. This study will focus and circulate on the
researchers itself on how Oregano and Lemongrass can be effective as their alternative
natural mosquito spray repellent.

4
The purpose of the study is to determine how effective oregano and lemongrass
are as a natural mosquito spray repellant.. This study will focus and circulate on the
researchers it self. Another reason why the researchers decided to conduct this study is
because there are some people who cannot afford to purchased those common products
that many people are using and mostly can be bought in supermarkets. As a result, many
people will be able to use this research or study as a backup option if they ever find
themselves in a situation where they desperately needed it.

The researchers' problem had arisen in some circumstances, the only practicable
method for controlling biting insects is personal protection, which involves applying
repellent substances to human skin. According to the study of J Arthropod Borne (2018)
said that the N, N-diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET), developed in 1954, is the most
popular synthetic insect repellent used on blood-sucking arthropods. But, DEET is
being investigated since there have been reports of allergic reactions and harmful
effects, especially on youngsters and pregnant people. On that account, finding a safer
repellent compound for use on the human body surface is necessary. Using an oregano-
based insect repellent is an efficient approach to manage biting insects, especially
mosquitoes. These products can be applied to various items, like furniture, to lessen the
number of mosquitoes in our houses.

5
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Philippines has logged 51,622 dengue cases from January 1 to June 18, 2022,
the Department of Health (DOH) said Monday. In a Viber message to reporters, the
DOH noted the figure is 58 percent higher compared to the 32,610 reported cases during
the same period last year. Dengue is transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito,
common in all parts of the Philippines. The rainy season, typically June to February, is
the peak period for dengue as water collects in blocked gutters and street drains, turning
them into breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

As a researcher and a student affected by this deadly disease we always have to

consider our safety to avoid dengue. Putting up screens on your windows and doors to
prevent mosquitoes from entering your home. Purchase insecticides that's effective
against mosquitoes and are safe to use inside your home or better yet if you don't have
enough money to purchase one in the market just make from natural ingredients that
can be found in your home. Also the use of mosquito coils may help but use with caution
and keep away from the reach of children. Dispose of waste properly, use insect
repellent, wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants, and control mosquitoes inside and
outside your home.

Considering that not all of us have enough money to buy some insect repellent
at the supermarkets, that's why the researchers came up with an experiment that oregano
and lemon grass can be a natural and effective mosquito spray repellent. This research
will also talk about how household chores, temperature, and the weather affects the
high cases of dengue fever and how Oregano and lemongrass can be effective as their
mosquito repellent. And to help the parents and fellow people who also are having
difficulties when it comes to avoiding dengue, this research will share tips on how to
improve our healthy environment in our own homes to avoid dengue diseases.

organic insect repellent.

7
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The purpose of the study is to determine the efficacy of oregano and lemongrass
as a alternative natural mosquito repellent.

The following inquiries will be pursued by the researcher to address;

1. What is the perception of the respondents in using the oregano and lemongrass
as their mosquito repellent?
2. Do the respondents find the natural insect repellent to be effective after using
it?
3. What would the findings be from the survey conducted after the product was
used by the respondents?
4. Is there any significant difference between using oregano and lemongrass as a
natural mosquito repellent?

HYPOTHESIS

There is significant difference between using oregano and lemongrass as a

alternative natural mosquito repellent.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This research study aims to determine the effectiveness of oregano and lemon
grass as natural mosquito repellents. The researchers believe that the findings of the
study will benefit the following:

Students. This research will provide students with information on how to make a
cheap and simple to do at-home mosquito repellent.

Community. This study will help the community by giving them information on
how to make their own mosquito repellent without spending too much money.

8
Department of Health (DOH). The finding of this study will help the Department
of Health to lower the cases of dengue in the Philippines.

Government Officials. This study will help the government officials to encourage
the residents of their municipality or barangay to make natural mosquito repellants out
of oregano and lemongrass.

Future Researchers. Future researchers who intend to undertake the same study or
any research similar to this research paper can use the findings of this study as a
reference and a guide.

SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The efficacy of oregano and lemon grass as organic insect repellents is the main
topic of this study. Oregano oil is widely known for its ability to ward off mosquitoes,
with several five substances found in the plant lemongrass, including carvacrol, thymol,
and terpinene, have been demonstrated to be effective at deterring mosquitoes.

The effectiveness of this product will also be tested by the researchers with the
help of the respondents. The researchers its self will test this natural mosquito repellent,
they will experiment with oregano and lemongrass. The product will simply be sprayed
liberally over the mosquito breeding grounds.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

The following terms are defined optionally:

Effectiveness- This is the number one goal of this study and it refers to the level of
something's accomplishment in achieving the anticipated outcome; success.

Lemon Grass- A fragrant tropical grass that produces lemon-scented oil. It is

frequently added to medicines as a flavoring agent or as a scent to make a product
more enticing to use.

9
Mosquito- An aquatic insect with long, slender legs. Malaria, encephalitis, and
dengue are some of the deadly diseases that can be spread by the bite of the
bloodsucking female.

Oregano- The researchers will use this as the main substance in this study, and it
refers as a plant having leaves that are used fresh or dried in cooking that is aromatic
and can be used as herb and natural insect repellent.

Repellent- Something that prevents insects or other pests from landing or moving in
the house.

REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE

Oregano

The objective of the study was to ascertain the effectiveness of Tagetes erecta
L. leaf extract as a mosquito repellent. as well as Origanum vulgare L. in order to get
herbal mosquito repellent candles that are both secure and effective. It is less expensive
and environmentally hazardous to use essential oil and leaf extracts that are widely
available in the area. Thus, it may be inferred from this study that natural products made
of non-toxic ingredients could be employed as insect repellents.

This investigation looked at the larvicidal effects of Origanum vulgare

(Oregano) on third-instar Aedes sp. larvae. Different Oregano leaf extract
concentrations were utilized, including 100 mg/L, 50 mg/L, 30 mg/L, and 70 mg/L, as
well as control groups (commercial insecticide for positive results and rainwater for
negative results) to test for insecticidal qualities. The oregano was grown and also
purchased from a nearby market. The rainwater used as the adverse control was
gathered in a basin. After 24, 40, and 64 hours of exposure to the test solutions, 25 third-
instar larvae from the experimental and control groups were tested and observed. The
experiment's findings led the researchers to the conclusion that oregano leaf extract has
a stronger larvicidal effect on Aedes mosquitoes. Therefore, the researchers advise
against using commercial larvicides in place of this extract when controlling
mosquitoes.

To sum up, scientists looked at the larvicidal effects of Origanum vulgare

(oregano) on third-instar Aedes species. larvae. In order to control mosquitoes, the
researchers advise against substituting commercial larvicides for oregano leaf extract.
Using leaf and essential oil extracts that are commonly available in the region is less
expensive and riskier for the environment.

11
The primary way that arthropods like mosquitoes and ticks, which are often
infected with one or more pathogens, attack humans Entomology.animals is to spread
vector-borne diseases for humans and domesticated animals, a large portion of the
inhabited planet is plagued by arthroscopic diseases. The widespread yellow fever
mosquito, Aedes aegypti (L.), is recognised as a health hazard and nuisance biter
(Cimmino et al. 2015). By using repellents correctly, one can protect themselves from
tick and mosquito bites. N,N-dimethyl-3-methylbenzamide (DEET), as well as
permethrin for repellent items applied to clothing, have long been the standard among
repellents authorized for use on human skin (Demirci et al. 2013). (Bernier et al. 2015).
Research, development, and marketing of numerous plant-based repellents have been
stimulated by growing public interest in repellents that use non-synthetic compounds
derived from natural materials. (Tabanca et al. 2016). Most plants develop secondary
substances that not only protect them against some plant infections and herbivores but
also ward off a wide range of arthropods, including blood feeders that offer no damage
to plants. According to reports, the herb oregano, Origanum vulgare L., deters ticks.
Origanum americanum (Meng et al., 2016) and Origanum onites L. are two oregano
species. The Aedes-borne Zika virus has recently drawn significant attention as a
concern to human health in an increasing number of nations (Rasmussen et al. 2016).
The pathogen has also been connected to occurrences of microcephaly in children born
to Zika virus-infected women, in addition to the virus's clinical symptoms (Rasmussen
et al. 2016). Am's actions of host-seeking. Americanum and Ae They make excellent
test subjects for repellents due to their aegypti. As a potential arthropod repellent and
source of advantageous chemicals, we thus evaluated Origanum onites (Syn: O.
smyrneum L.) essential oil (EO) against these veterinary and medicinal pests.

According to Jacquiline Benaid (2019), Dengue and other illnesses brought on

by mosquitoes have been one of the main issues that the Department of Education and
DOH have been dealing with. Many plants, such as lemongrass and oregano, which
have potent fragrant aromas, are effective insect repellents in the Philippines. In order
to provide a natural alternative to synthetic chemical repellents, this study aims to
determine the degree of repellency of the aforementioned native plants against Aedes
aegypti.

12
To sum it up, by saying that arthroscopic diseases affect both domesticated animals
and humans on a significant section of the planet's surface. One can avoid getting bitten
by mosquitoes and ticks by using repellents properly. Most plants produce secondary
compounds that not only defend them from various plant diseases and herbivores but
also deter a wide variety of arthropods. Origanum vulgare L., a plant used as an herb,
reportedly repels ticks.

Lemongrass

Using lemongrass plant essential oil to keep insects away in a field. Regine Gries,
Gerhard Gries, Max Almond, Daniel AH Peach. The 2019 of Journal of Medical
Entomology It has been proposed that plant essential oils (EOs) can act as spatial
repellents and assist break the mosquitoes' cycle of disease transmission. Our goal was
to evaluate the spatial repellency effects of EOs on the Aedes aegypti (L.) mosquito,
which transmits tropical yellow fever (Diptera: Culicidae), and on local mosquito
populations in coastal British Columbia (Canada). Three of the single EOs examined
were shown to be repellant to Ae in laboratory tests conducted in accordance with
World Health Organization guidelines. aegypti: lemongrass, rosemary, and cinnamon
bark. Through synergistic interactions, binary combinations of particular EOs improved
the repellant impact of individual EOs. Because the most potent EO constituent(s) in
the blend were diluted, ternary EO often had less of a mosquito-repelling impact. In
field tests, the EO of lemongrass demonstrated spatial repellency toward the cool-
weather mosquito, Culiseta incidens (Thomson) (Diptera: Culicidae), even when it was
released from sources up to one meter away from a sentinel trap that released CO2 and
odorants that were attractive to vertebrate hosts. In small outdoor gatherings, the use of
EOs as spatial repellents may aid in preventing the transmission of diseases carried by
mosquitoes, especially when combined with other insect management techniques.

Since lemongrass is one of the most frequently used natural ingredients in the
formulation of mosquito repellent, the researcher discovered that it is both highly
effective and safe to use without the use of chemicals. Additionally, because citronella
has a potent aroma that hides other mosquito attractants, it makes it more difficult for
mosquitoes to locate you.

13
The goal of the study is to determine whether lemongrass oil contains any
substances that could damage skin. Since lemongrass is an edible herb that is used to
make the oil, it is non-toxic and safe for children to use without fear of accidental
ingestion. According to Mr. Jayson Sindayen (2016), we were successful in our efforts
to manufacture a pesticide using lemongrass because it is practical and simple to grow
in gardens. It also serves as a great alternative to insecticide for a lot of folks. According
to our findings, seconds differ between the two separate factors.

In the past few years, the Philippines has seen a lot of mosquito-borne illnesses
that have killed many people. Many people are looking for methods to either kill or
deter those mosquitoes. Thus, research is done to create a repellant that is both efficient
and affordable.

Effective and environmentally friendly plant-based repellents are of interest to

many. The study will make use of marigold, lemongrass, and garlic (Maia & Moore,
2011).

Lemongrass provides a fragrance that insects find repulsive, making it a natural

mosquito repellent. Sulfurs found in garlic are effective at repelling mosquitoes.
Marigolds have an odor that mosquitoes find repulsive. However, no research has been
done on using those three substances together as a patch. (ASEAN)

To sum up, using the essential oil of the lemongrass plant to keep insects out of
a field. The use of EOs as spatial repellents in small outdoor gatherings may help to
reduce the spread of diseases transmitted by mosquitoes. EOs can assist in lowering
mosquito populations when used in conjunction with other insect management
strategies. One of the most often used organic substances in the creation of insect
repellant is lemongrass. Without the use of chemicals, the study found that it is both
extremely effective and safe to use. It is harder for mosquitoes to find you since
citronella has a strong scent that masks other insect attractants.

14
According to the Weed Society of Pakistan (2019), the components of
lemongrass oil differ depending on where they are produced. Therefore, citral, geraniol,
myrcene, citronellal, and limonene are the main components of lemongrass oil.

Lemongrass has a significant amount of geraniol and citronellal, which are used
to ward off insects, according to homeguides.safegate.com.

Effectiveness of Natural Insect Repellent According to thehealthvermont.gov,

natural repellents are less dangerous than repellents that contain DEET. It is safer to
say that children who use natural insect repellents can play in the backyard and engage
in outdoor activities without worrying about getting bitten by insects because herbs that
contain these essential oils and other ingredients that the insects dislike are effective in
keeping the insects away. Examples of such herbs include catnip, citronella, and
lemongrass.

Insects shouldn't disrupt a pleasant evening on the deck or a fun day of playing
in the garden thanks to lemongrass, which is a rather efficient insect repellent when
used alone or in conjunction with other comparable chemicals.

Although it doesn't work as well as the potent, potentially dangerous ingredients

in commercial insecticides, lemongrass does serve as a mosquito repellent. The plant
also works well against ants and guards against ant-borne illnesses including E.
Salmonella and C. coli (Johnson, 2019)

The researchers selected this company because it specialized in producing high-

quality mosquito repellent that contains lemongrass and garlic to ensure that you are
safe wherever you are. You can also spray around your home. The researcher
discovered that mosquito repellent is very safe and effective without the use of
chemicals because lemongrass is the most widely used natural ingredient in mosquito
repellent formulations. Strong citronella aroma obscures other smells that mosquitoes
may find attractive, making it more difficult for them to discover you. then the flying
insects are repelled by the garlic.

15
The study's goal is to demonstrate that because lemongrass oil is created by
natural processes, it does not include substances that could hurt the skin because it is
lemongrass, an edible herb, it is non-toxic and can be used by children, without any
worry of accidental intake.

In conclusion, lemongrass contains a sizable amount of the insect-repelling

compounds geraniol and citronellal. Additionally, the plant effectively repels ants and
protects against ant-borne diseases including E. C. salmonellae and coli (Johnson,
2019). The most popular natural component in mosquito repellent recipes is lemongrass

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

RESEARCH DESIGN

The purpose of this research was to determine the effectiveness of the Oregano and
Lemongrass as Alternative natural Mosquito Repellent.

Due to the fact that the product being studied is already on the market, this study is
experimental-developmental in nature. Experimental-developmental is a systematic
approach to produce new materials or products, and putting some new processes, or
significantly improving those already product that is existing. It draws on knowledge
that already amassed through research and practical experience.

In order to ascertain if the results demonstrate a positive or negative association, it is

decided that a quantitative study is appropriate for the research. Quantitative research
is the procedure of gathering and interpreting numerical data. It can be used to
formulate forecasts, examine hypothesis, and extrapolate findings to a population.

RESPONDENTS OF THE STUDY

This was a self-assessment study, so the study's respondents were the researchers
themselves. The total number of respondents was 5 (five). This means that five
respondents were used as sources of data gathered by the researchers.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

The respondents for the study, "Effectiveness of Oregano and Lemongrass as an

Alternative Natural Mosquito Repellent," will be the five researcher.

17
The researchers will use a research-completed instrument that will allow them to
collect the information they require for the study as well as gauge their own opinions
of the product.

The researchers will use a research-completed instrument that will allow them to
collect the information they require for the study as well as gauge their own opinions
of the product.

The study will address topics including how to employ oregano and lemongrass as
mosquito repellents and how daily activities, the environment, and temperature affect
the high incidence of dengue illness, among other things.
The questionnaires will be filled out by the researchers using the provided pen and
paper.

In their answers, the researchers will provide yes or no and will rate 1 to 5
responses to a likert scale of questions about how they keep tabs on the use of
oregano and lemon grass as all-natural mosquito repellents in each of their individual
residences.

DATA GATHERING

The researchers from the St. Therese Montessori School of San Pablo's science,
technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) strand prepared and created a self-
made survey questionnaire with closed-ended questions that could be answered with a
yes or no and a likert scale by rating the questionnaires 1 to 5, and distributed it to the
researchers themselves, who are the respondents of this study.

The questionnaires were distributed to the researchers by an online application,

which is the messenger. The respondents were given enough time to answer the given
questionnaires. Finally, after collecting the survey questionnaires, the researchers
recorded all the data gathered, analyzed, and interpreted.

SUMMARY, FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

SUMMARY
This study was conducted in the homes of the researchers. Where the 5 researchers
itself are the respondents of this study. Which are the Grade 12 Stem B- Almandrite.
This study used quantitative research and pen and paper surveys with questions of how
effective their product is.

The main purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of Oregano and
Lemongrass as a natural alternative mosquito repellent.

Specifically it sought to answer the following questions: What is the perception of the
respondents in using the oregano and lemongrass as their mosquito repellent? Do the
respondents find the natural insect repellent to be effective after using it? What would
the findings be from the survey conducted after the product was used by the
respondents? Is there any significant difference between using oregano and lemongrass
as a natural mosquito repellent? Mean and standard deviation was used to calculate the
results on how effective the product is for the researchers.

FINDINGS

Based on the gathered data from the respondents, the findings were the following:

For the first questions which are all about "How effective is the researchers mosquito
repellent in terms of the weather" got the 100 percent of "YES" which means that the
respondents agree that the researchers mosquito repellent is effective during day, night
time, rainy and sunny day.

For the questions on "The Effectiveness of Oregano and Lemongrass as Mosquito
