THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
The rationale of the study
Education is one of the many sectors in the world that has been
impacted by the outbreak of Covid-19. due to the pandemic, the learning
process must take place at home, and the first face-to-face instruction has
been replaced by online education (Mahitsa & Mahardini, 2020; Mishra et
al.,2020). according to the UNESCO organization, numerous problems occur
when online learning is conducted; this issue arises since the majority of
students prefer face-to-face instruction. This rapid and hasty transition of
teaching and learning from open classrooms to closed houses, along with the
protracted closure and home confinement throughout the pandemic, also has
an effect on students’ study habits. While students with greater
socioeconomic possibilities have access to technology tools and an internet
infrastructure, not all students fine home-based and technology-supported
practices appealing. Some students must continue their education with fewer
opportunities.
Maria Angelica Salcedo-Relucio, (2019) has examined the factors that
strongly affect the study habits of Grade 11 students in Pangasinan,
Philippines, amid the new normal education. She has begun a study on the
study habits of Pangasinan students in response to a call for multidisciplinary
research on the probable consequences of a coronavirus pandemic. Relucio

(2019) concluded that the factors that affect the study habits of the students
during new normal education include home environment, peer pressure and
social media addiction, work and financial instability, and family stress.
The consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic on current distant
learning universities have gotten less attention, despite a growing corpus of
research on how students interpreted its effects. 555 undergraduate students
at The Open University, UK, participated in an online survey that collected
data on demographics, study-related information, Covid-19 personal
circumstances, and changes in study habits. Of the study population, an
average of 36% reported negative impacts on their study activities and 15%
positive impacts. It was shown by logistic regression analysis (n=269) that
there are general adverse effects on study habits were associated with
difficulties in managing workload and limited interaction with other students.
Other factors, such as socioeconomic background, study level, limited
interaction with tutors, age, personal health, employment issues, and
childcare and caring responsibilities, relate to particular study habits. Findings
have implications for how universities with new and existing distance learning
practices address these factors and better support ongoing learning activity
during Covid-19 and other similar disruptions.
The purpose of this study is to determine the level of study habits of
GAS students at home and school and the factors that affect these study
habits and practices with the new normal education. Specifically, it determined
the profile of GAS students at the Liceo de Davao - Tagum branch in terms of
age, gender, general average, and monthly family income; it determined the
level of the study of habits and practices of GAS students in the new
education; determine the level of the factors that affect the study habits and
practices of GAS students in the new normal education; as well as the
implications of this study to the teachers, students, parents, and the society.
As such, this study sought to fill in the gap in undergraduate students’ study
habits during the Covid-19 pandemic. The reserchers examined the level and
the factors affecting the study habits of GAS students in Liceo de Davao -
Tagum.
Statement of the Problem
The purpose of this study was to determine the factors affecting the
study habits of GAS students amid new normal education in Liceo de Davao -
Tagum. Specifically, it would seek to answer the following questions:
1. What is the level of the current study habits of GAS students?
2. What is the level of influence of following factors in relation to
student’s study habits in terms of:
2.1 Family stress?
2.2 Wok and Financial Instability?
2.3 Peer Pressure?
2.4 Home Environment?
3. Is there significant relationship between level of influence of the
factors affecting study habits and GAS Student’s Study Habits in terms
of:
3.1 Family stress?

3.2 Wok and Financial Instability?
3.3 Peer Pressure?
3.4 Home Environment?
Research Hypothesis
From the problem stated above, the following hypothesis were
formulated:
H01. There is no significant relationship between family stress, financial
instability, peer pressure, and home environment to the study of the GAS
students amid new normal education.
Definitions of Terms
To provide clarity in the study’s major words, operational definitions are
given below.
New Normal Education. As used in this study, it refers to a previously
unfamiliar or a typical situation in education that has become standard, usual,
or expected in the present.
Study Habits. As used in the study refers to the regular tendencies
and practices that one depicts during the process of gaining information
through learning.
