LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

CROP PRODUCTION 8
LESSON: Secure and select good quality seeds.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, you should be able to:
1. Give the characteristics of good seeds;
2. Test the viability of seeds;
3. Determine the percentage germination of seeds; and
4. Value the importance of selecting good seeds in planting.

BACKGROUND FOR LEARNERS

Good seeds are essential in the success of growing legumes. It
must be remembered that a careful and efficient legume grower cannot
achieve success with poor quality seeds. Therefore, thorough and careful
selection of seeds should be observed to maximize yield.

The most careful and efficient grower cannot achieve success in

selecting good seeds even if he gives the closest attention to all other
factors of production. Good seeds have the following characteristics:
1. must be fresh and viable;
2. must be free from seed-borne diseases;
3. must be free from foreign materials and weed seeds;
4. must be fully mature; and
5. must be whole, not cracked.

In testing the viability or the ability of the seeds to germinate,

there are three methods to be used such as ragdoll method, seedbox
method and petri dish method. Testing the seeds is very important to be
implemented in order to determine whether the seed stock is of good
quality or not by way of computing the percentage germination of the
seed stock which must at least 80% and up. Percentage germination can
be computed using the formula:
Percentage germination = number of seeds germinated x 100
Number of seeds tested

Once seeds were tested and proven to be of good quality, they can
be planted using the following methods:
1. Row drill method – It specifies distances between rows with no
specific distances between plants.
2. Row hill method – It has definite distances between the hills and
between rows.
3. Broadcast method – Seeds are merely broadcast in the field.
ACTIVITY 1: GUESS WHAT I AM.
Directions: Below are jumbled letters, arrange and write them in a piece of paper. These are
the characteristics of a good seed that a legume grower must give attention to
achieve successful growing.

CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD
SEED

WORDS TO PONDER:
1. RADMUTE – The embryo must be fully developed, therefore, get seeds from ripe fruits.
2. BALIVE – Good seed must have the power to germinate and produce strong and healthy plants.
3. SEASIDE REEF – Good seed must be clear from infection.
4. SHERF – Good seed should be full of vigor, and not decayed.
5. AGAMED FERE – Good seed should be clear from injuries done by insects or mechanical
elements.
6. LACEN – Goods seed should be free from weed seeds and other foreign materials.
ACTIVITY 2: FOLLOW ME!
Directions: The following are steps in performing ragdoll, seedbox and petri dish
method of testing the viability of seeds. Choose one (1) method and
perform it by following the procedures given.

6. Water daily and unroll the cloth

PETRI-DISC METHOD
1. Place a number of randomly picked seeds from the bulk supply in a petri
dish or similar container.
2. Place enough water to moisten the seeds.
3. Cover the seeds with filter paper than can retain moisture for 5 days.
4. Determine the germination percentage after 5 days.

ACTIVITY 3: DETERMINE MY GERMINATION PERCENTAGE

Directions: Solve the following problems by computing the germination percentage
of the seeds. Show your solution.

1. Miss Sapphire tests the percentage germination of her seeds. After 5 days, she
found out that only 89 germinated from the 120 seeds planted. What is the
percentage germination of the seeds?

2. Mr Edgar plans to plant 130 seeds of cowpea in his backyard, however he is not
sure if the seeds stocks are of good quality. He then tested the seeds and found
out the only 93 seeds germinated. What is the percentage germination of the
seeds?
ACTIVITY 4: I NEED AN EXPLANATION!
Directions: Explain the following questions.

1. Why do we need to test the viability of the seeds?
