To provide a standard for the fabrication and installation of floor penetration covers at all MDC projects. If a worker falls down an open or inadequately protected floor penetration it can result in serious injury or fatality. Many MDC projects still have either no floor penetration protection or it is substandard and made of phenolic board or other inadequate materials.
EHS Requirements/ Initiative:
Floor penetration cover requirements; Floor penetrations are to be covered by steel checker plate or a fabricated steel frame at least 900mm high with netting & toe boards fitted. Steel checker plate covers shall be painted yellow with a black diagonal cross. All floor penetration covers shall be secured and fixed to prevent possible movement. Ensure the penetration cover is bigger than the floor opening with safe allowance of at least 50mm overhang on all sides. Strictly avoid the use phenolic board, barricade tape and any materials that are ineffective as floor penetration cover. Obtain Safety Protection Removal Permit prior for the removal of all floor penetration covers.
