A DETAILED
LESSON PLAN IN
MATHEMATICS
(Rational Algebraic Expression)
I. OBJECTIVES
At end of the session, the students should be able to;

a) define rational expression,

b) illustrate rational algebraic expression, and

c) develop the value of appreciating the nature.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

Topic: Rational Algebraic Expression

References: Mathematics 8- Module 1 Quarter 1 (Lesson 1)

Materials: Laptop, Powerpoint Presentation and Chalkboard pictures.

III. PROCEDURE

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. Preliminary Activities

1. Prayer

“Before we start our class, let us

all put ourselves in the holy Prayer
presence of our Lord.”

“Please, lead the prayer.”

2. Greetings

“Good morning, class!” Good morning, Ma’am

3. Checking of Attendance

” Is there any absent in the class?” None, Ma’am

4. Recalling of the
Classroom Rules
“Before we begin, let us recall
what to do in our classroom”

Classroom Rules: The 5 P’s

1. Be prepared

2. Be positive
3. Be productive

4. Be resPectful

5. Be participative
B. Developmental Activities

1. Review

“Before we start to our new lesson,

let us have first a review regarding
our previous lesson about
Polynomials.”

“What is a polynomials?”
A polynomial can have constants, variables and
exponents.

“How to find a Greatest

The greatest common factor is the greatest factor
Common Factor (GCF)?”
that divides both numbers. To find the greatest
common factor, first list the prime factors of each
number.

“Very Good!”

“What are the difference Monomial consisting of only one term, meanwhile
between monomial, binomial, binomial consisting of two terms, and trinomial
and trinomial?” consist of 3 terms

“Very good! It seems that you

understand our previous lesson
about polynomials.”

C. Motivations

“Let’s have an activity. I’ll show

you a jumbled words and then tell
what word will be formed”
“Do you understand?” Yes ma’am

“Okay, Let’s start!”

D. Presentation

“Let us use those words for our

lesson for today.”

“Are you ready?”

Yes ma’am

E. Discussion

“Our lesson today is all about

rational algebraic expressions”

Rational algebraic expression

is a quotient of two other
algebraic expressions. Thus if P
and Q are algebraic expressions
and Q ≠ 0 then the expression
P
is called a rational algebraic
Q
expression. Also, Rational
expressions look like fractions
that have variables in their
denominators

“We say that a rational algebraic

expression is meaningless for
those values of the variable for
which the denominator Q is
zero.”

Each of the following is an

example of a rational expresion:
2 c +d

3 c+5 c−d
7x

2y
 5 ax−2
3a

x− y
3 y+5

y+ 1

“Let’s have an examples”

Name whether each of the following is a

rational algebraic expressions or not.
1. 3 x+ y
1. Not
2. √ x3
y−2 2. Not
3.
y +2

7 3. Yes
4. 2
x

5. −9 x
2 4. Yes

5. Not

“Do you understand what rational Yes ma’am

algebraic expression is?”

“Now, what name is given to an Rational expression

expression which can be written as the
quotient of two polynomials?

“Is every polynomial a rational Yes ma’am

expression?”

“Is every rational expression a all rational expressions need not be a polynomial
polynomial?”

“How will you describe a polynomial?” Have constant, variable, and exponent

“Do you have any questions regarding

on our topic today?” None ma’am

“Very good, since you have no

questions, let us proceed to our
activity.”

F. Application

“I’ll give you seatwork and you

can answer it 5 minutes only.”

“So, here’s the directions”

Tell whether or not each of the

following is a rational expression.
8 1. Yes
1.
2x
−1
2. Yes
2. (2 a+3 b)
3. 3 x+ 5 y 3. No
6 4. Yes
4.
x
5. Yes
3+ x
5.
3−x
Yes ma’am

“Are you done?”

“Exchange your paper to your

seatmates.”

“Let us check your answers.”

None Ma’am

“Do you have any questions?”

Rational expressions look like fractions that have

G. Generalization
variables in their denominators and often
“What is a rational expression?” numerators too.

It is a quotient of two other algebraic expressions.

Thus if P and Q are algebraic expressions and
Q ≠ 0 then the expression P/Q is called a rational
algebraic expression.
It is used in economics to find out the revenue,
cost, etc. In different fields of mathematics, for
“How are rational expressions instance, trigonometry, geometry, etc. algebraic
important in solving real life expressions are required to solve the unknown
problems?” angles and values.

“Also, it can be used to solve a

variety of problems that involve
rates, times, and work.”
Yes ma’am

“Do you understand class?”

IV. Evaluation
Identify whether each of the following is a rational algebraic expressions or not.

1. 5 x+ 3 y Not
2. √ x 2+ y Not
x−5
3. Yes
x+5
7
4. 2 Yes
x
5. −16 x 4 Not

V. Assignment
Which of the following are rational expressions?
1. x− y Not
2. √ x + y
7
Not
x−5
3. Yes
x+5
−2
4. Yes
x2
5. −6 x 9 Not
