News and Announcements

A wonderful time was had by all of us that participated with harvesting eggplants at the Community Farm on Saturday. A huge thank you to Mrs. Tolosczko for organizing such a meaningful event for all of us. We plan on going back as a fourth grade group in the spring to help plant. We hope you will consider joining us. Thank you to everyone who ordered books on-line. We earned 9 new books for our classroom library as well as 5,000 bonus points to purchase books with. Keep reading!!! Literature Circles begin this week. During our language arts block, your child will be introduced to their literature circle book and assigned the required reading and think cards for the week. The books and think cards should come home every night and then return to school the next day. Your children will have time during the day to work on their reading but the majority of the work should be completed at home as part of nightly homework. For your child to participate in our literature circle discussions in a meaningful way, he/she needs to be prepared each week. I am looking forward to seeing many of you on September 27, 2011 for Curriculum Night at 6:300pm. We will meet in our classroom first (room 207) for 40 minutes. After that, Mr. Mabie will invite you down to the cafeteria for a brief talk. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns. The best way to contact me is by using my school e-mail address at stravers@shrewsbury.k12.ma.us. You should also feel free to send in a note to school. I am looking forward to a wonderful year! Warmly, Sandra Travers

Be sure to have your child explore the math links for unit 1 at the following site: http://sqworl.com/89t258 Read Aloud Although outwardly Mark appears to be a spoiled rich kid that just doesnt care, we are getting to know why Mark is the person he is. It will be interesting to see what happens as the children head out into the woods for their week long field trip at the State Park. Mr. Maxwell continues to try and reach out to Mark with no success at all. Social Studies There are many different types/tools of maps - globes, flat maps, puzzles, atlases. This week we will explore them and hopefully work with map scales. We will focus on map scales and directionality this week. Last week the children watched two videos you might want to check out with them: Longitude and latitude: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0c1idtn3e8 How to Read a Map: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QlJ n_iMeAg Science This last week, we learned about the Scientific Method and explored the properties of rocks. We will continue this week as we dissect our mock rocks to determine their ingredients.
