o Temporary Steel Platform Design

o Material Summary
 All structural steel section to be grade S275 or S450J0
 All weld to be 12mm fillet weld
 Compressive strength of grout to be 30MPa at 28 days
 Allowable bond stress between rock and grout is taken as 0.7Mpa for compression
 Allowable bond stress between steel and grout is taken as 320Mpa
 Soil material above the rockhead is considered as medium dense fill material or better, the
coefficient of horizontal subgrade reaction nh is taken as 4400kN/m3 for submerged condition,
refer to table 6.11 of ‘Foundation Design and Construction, GEO Publication No. 1/2006’

o Load
 Lifting plant with operating weight not more than 107 tons. Plan area of the plant is 360m 2.
Based on the catalog rom the plant manufacturer, the max. ground pressure is 109kPa
(considered as precise information). 3 nos. of plants are allowed to rest on the platform in the
design.
 Lifting operation is allowed on the temporary steel platform. Since the information provided by
the manufacturer is considered as precise information, 25% increase of static vertical loads from
the crane as stated in SUOS 2011 clause 13.7.3 is not required. Horizontal dynamic load of 10%
of vertical wheel loads is applied due to the travelling of cranes.
 Live Load: 20kPa for Construction Load
 No wind load is considered in the design

o Sway Check
 SUOS clause 6.3.2
 Steel platform is classified as sway frame and therefore second order effect is considered with
amplification factor as refer to SUOS clause 6.6.2 in the temporary steel platform main frame
design.

o Construction Sequence
o Installation of Steel Platform King Post
 Set out the location of king posts
 Setup the drilling rig and enclose the drilling rig with tarpaulin sheeting
 Adjust the drilling mast to vertical
 Temporary casing shall be 610mm dia. and be advanced together with drill bit or hammer head
during operation
 Check verticality by placing a spirit level against the casing in two perpendicular
directions for every 6m interval
 Extend the temporary casing by full strength butt weld

 Continue boring process until the temporary casing is descent to 0.3m below rockhead
 Continue pre-boring in rock by changing the drill bit to down-the-hole hammer until require toe
level is reach. The drillhole shall be min. 550mm dia with 5000mm rock socket length.
 Install 305x305x223 Universal Bearing Pile (UBP) into drillhole
 Carry out cement grouting by tremie method. The non-shrink cement grout shall have 30MPa in
compressive strength at 28 days after casing with W/C ratio of 0.45
 Extract temporary casing
 Backfill the void of pre-boring hole with soil or granular filling materials

o Installation of Steel Bracing

 cut off the king posts to the required top level
 Erect primary beam on top of the king post
 Erect secondary beam on top of the primary beam
 Fix the FSPIII sheet pile decking on top of the secondary beam
 Erect handrail/protective barrier at the edge of steel platform
 Excavate 500-1000mm below the 1st layer of bracing
 Install bracing during further excavation to the soil formation level

o All welding works shall be tested and inspected according to the Code of Practice for the Structural Use
of Steel 2011 table 14.3a. Frequency of inspection for weld joints during the installation temporary steel
platform & King Post shall follow the Code of Practice for the Structural Use of Steel 2011 clause
14.3.6.1.
o All piles shall not deviate by 75mm from specified position in plan measured at cut-off level
o Verticality of pile is to be in 1:75
