Answer all questions.

1 (a) (i) An isolated charge Q = 5 × 10−6 C is placed in a region and it creates an


electric field around it. Calculate the work done to move a test charge
q =2.0 × 10−7 C from point S to point P which is located at 60 cm and
30 cm respectively from charge Q.
(ii) Given two point charges Q1 = +q and Q2 = +4q at a distance r.
Determine the potential at midway between both charges in terms of k,
q, and r.

respectively. If q =1.0 × 10−6 C, determine
(i) the electric field at the point D.
(ii) the potential energy of all charges when the point charge 2.0 × 10−6 C is
placed at A.

A coil of 50 turns and with a radius of 4.0 cm is placed perpendicular to a


magnetic field as shown in FIGURE 4. The magnetic field increases from 0 T
to 20 T in 2.0 s.

(i) If the resistance of the coil is 2.0 Ω, what is the magnitude of the
induced current?

(ii) Determine the direction of the induced current.

(b) A rectangular coil of 150 turns has a dimension of 15 cm × 20 cm. It rotates at


a constant angular velocity of 325 rpm in a uniform magnetic field of flux
density 6.0 T. Calculate the induced emf at the instant when the plane of the
coil makes an angle of 35° to the magnetic field.

(c) A solenoid of length, l = 7.0 cm has 500 turns. When the current in the
solenoid is increased from zero 0 to 3.0 A in 0.35 s, the magnitude of the
induced emf is 0.015 V. Calculate,
(i) the cross sectional area of the solenoid.
(iii) the final magnetic flux linkage through the solenoid.

5 An electric circuit consists of a 20  resistor, a 500 F capacitor and a 0.15 H inductor


are connected in series with AC source of frequency Hz. If the rms current in the

circuit is 0.2 A,
(a) calculate the rms voltage.

(b) Sketch a labelled phasor diagram for the circuit involving XC, XL, R, Z and  .

(c) Calculate the power dissipated in the circuit.

6 (a) An object is placed at 12 cm in front of a mirror, an upright image is twice the


size of the object is formed. Calculate the radius of curvature of the mirror.

(b) An object is placed at 15.0 cm from a thin biconcave lens with radius of
curvature 25.0 cm. The refractive index of the lens is 1.53. Determine the focal
length of the lens.

(c) An object is placed 7 cm from a glass rod with hemispherical tip as
shown in FIGURE 5. If the radius of curvature and refractive index of glass
rod is 15 cm and 1.52 respectively, calculate the image distance.

7 A single-slit diffraction pattern is obtained on a screen placed at a distance of 10 cm


from the slit of width 5 μm. The wavelength of the monochromatic light used is
5.9 × 10-7 m.
(a) Calculate the angular separation between the first and second minima.

8 An ultraviolet light of wavelength 280 nm is used in an experiment of photoelectric
effect on lithium. A lithium surface has a work function of 2.5 eV. Determine the

9 An electron has a wavelength of 0.5 nm when it is travel at a speed v in an experiment


of electron diffraction. Determine the value of v.

10 A prepared sample of radioactive isotope has an activity of 240 Bq. The activity of
sample become 80 Bq after 6 hours. Calculate

(a) the half-life of isotope.
