Task 1: First-aid arrangements

Keeping in view the scenario, the store manager needs to review all his first aid arrangements, the
following of some of the thing that need to be worked on:

 The store manager needs to create a team of a few trained workers in the store who can
provide immediate medical attention to injured worker.
 According to the scenario, the store manager needs to conduct a risk assessment to determine
what type of medical care workers need in the event of an accident in the store.
 Manager need to include a proper first aid box in their list of documents to know that we have
first aid arrangements in case of an emergency.
 First aid boxes should be located so that in case of emergency, immediate first aid can be
provided to the injured worker.
 According to the scenario, there is no description of any past accidents requiring the store
manager to review the stores past accident so that appropriate medical assistance measures
can be taken keeping them in mind.
 The store manager should post first aid notices at specific locations in the store so that staff
know where the first aid boxes are available in case of accident.
 The store should have adequate stock of first aid boxes containing all the equipment required
for first aid.
 The manager should account for the number of workers in the store so that he knows how
many boxes of first aid are required.
 The manager needs to ensure that qualified worker who is skilled in providing medical
assistance is present in the store at all time.
 The manager need to review past accidents in the store to see if the first aid arrangements he
has are adequate.
 The manager should provide first aid training to all workers in the store.

Task 2: Management failures and control measures


(A)
There were many arrangements in the store that failed to lead to the accident, some of which are
listed below which cause of accident:

 The current manager of the store has no interest in health and safety arrangements and is
mostly focused on the work that led to the accident.
 The health and safety documents that were created in the store did not mention how the
worker should lift heavy objects and what their lifting limits should be.
 It was not considered necessary by the management to inform the new temporary workers in
the store about the health and safety policies which made them focus more only on work.
 There was no restriction by management on workers not to wear open toed and heeled shoes
between jobs in the store, which caused the worker slip on the ladder and cause the accident.
 According to the scenario, no any risk assessment is conducted by management before hiring
new workers in the store.
 According to the scenario, no team was formed by the store manager to review the health and
safety policy at the store which led to the accident.
 In the event of a rush in the store, no strategy was adopted by the manager, which led to
confusion among the workers in the event of a rush.
 The store used no special way to access the stock room, only a ladder that was also damaged,
which was climbed up and down by more than one workers at a time.

According to the scenario, all these management failures led to accidents in the store.

(B)

 The manager should immediately hold a meeting with the workers and review all the
activities taking place there and control them so that future accidents can be reduced.
 According to the scenario, the manager should access the stores risk and document all the
failures that led to the accident and take action on them.
 The manager should prevent the worker from wearing high heeled and open toed shoes
during work so that the accident does not appear.
 The manager should have a competent worker in the store to check the risk assessment of
the store every week.
 The store manager should display a copy of all health and safety documents on the board
for all workers in the store to keep in mind.
 The manager should immediately make it a policy that incoming new workers should be
given immediate health and safety training.

 The employer should train all the workers in the store properly about the work so that they
know all the activities there.
 According to the scenario, manager should restrict the worker to carry minimum weight at a
time so that access to stock room is easy and no accidents occur.
 The manager should immediately review the risk assessment so that the error that are going
on can be corrected.
 A manager should include controls that change the way work is done, including policies and
other rules, and work practices such as standards and operating procedures, including
training, and maintenance of equipment, and personal safety procedures.
 According to the scenario, the communication system between workers should be better so
that there is no disruption in case of emergency.
 The manager should create a team to implement the health and safety policy.

Task 3: Reporting the accident

 It is the important for the store manager to report the accident to the competent authority to
help formulate health and safety policy and prevent future accidents.
 According to the scenario, it is important for the manager to report the accident to the
competent authority so that to detect and improve the errors in the store.
 So that the manager can find out which law is being violated in the store and take action
against it and further improve the polices
 Reporting is important so that the manager knows how much damage the store has
sustained during the accident.
 So that the manager can find out which equipment in the store needs to be replaced, for
example the ladder.

 Reviewing precious near misses help create a culture in the work place that identifies work
place hazards and help to prevent them.
 Reviewing the precious near misses to help the mistakes were detected in the current risk
assessment, which helped to prevent the reduction of accident
 Investigation old near misses saves time and money and facilities to investigation, which
helps prevent accidents.
 According to the scenario, after review the old near misses documents ensure that no
accidents occur in the future and that workers work safely.
 According to the scenario, Reviewing of near misses is not only legal requirements it is good
for safety management to report them internally.
 By reviewing the old risk assessment the manager found out what was wrong or caused the
accident.
 According to the scenario, by reviewing the precious near misses, the store manager knows
what action to take in case of an accident.
 A recent report also suggests that scaffolding is being signed off incorrectly. Additional
training and inspections may be scheduled.

Task 4: Role and responsibility of the manager

(A)

The current store manager is not serious about health and safety policies in the store, some
of which are listed below:

 The current manager did not carry out a risk assessment due to the arrival of new
workers due to climate change which led to the accident.
 Store manager are more focused on customers due to which workers do not pay much
attention to health and safety polices
 According to the scenario, the current store manager is not health and safety aware
due to which he does not pay attention to health and safety policy.
 No health and safety measures were taken by the manager in the store due to which
the workers first priority was work which led to the accident.
 According to the scenario, there is no policy enforced by the store manager as to what
strategy to adopt during rush hours.
 No medical assistance was arranged by the store manager in case of an accident in the
store.
 According to the scenario, the employer should supervise workers to detect and
control errors so that accidents can be reduced.
 Manager should provide safety shoes and protective equipment to the workers so that
accident can be reduced.
 Manager are required to train all workers in the store on the job and to educate them
on how to take care of their own and other workers health and safety.

 Brief the new worker coming into the store about the job before starting the job.
 The manager needs to train all workers in the store about the job and how to take

Task 5: Induction training

Workers at various locations need to be trained, some of which are as follows:

 The Manager needs to create a policy in the store that clearly status that new worker should
be trained on the job before they start working.
 The manager needs to provide adequate equipment to the workers in the stock room to access
the goods so that they feel secure.
 Manager should must assess the risk assessment before hiring new workers in the store so that
the risk of accident to reduced
 Manager should every morning before starting the work inspection the work place so that he
know any hazard about work related.
 The current risk assessment should be revised, as part of an overall review of any existing
policies and procedures.
 According to the scenario, the manager should inspect the controls implemented in the work
place and make changes as necessary.
 The manager should investigation the cause of the accidents and need to implement proper
controls on the work place.
 Workers should be restricted from wearing high heeled shoes during work so that they do not
have any accidents while using the ladders.
 The manager need to check the stairs because the condition of the stairs is very bad and it is
difficult for the workers to reach the stock room.

Task 6: Morality in managing health and safety

 The manager in the store was not interested in the health and safety of the work but was
more focused on the work due to which the workers were not playing attention to the health
and safety policies.
 The workers morals were not taken care of in the store and they were overloaded with work
due to which the workers were under severe pressure.
 And the workers were not given any kind of training before starting the work due to which
the workers were feeling unsafe.
 We have noticed that the current store manager is not aware of health and safety so they
are not serious about worker safety.
 According to the scenario, the store did not have first aid to administer to the injured
worker at the scene of the accident due to which the morale of the worker fell down.
 The worker was not informed about the near misses that was there because the workers
were casually approaching the stock room by the ladder.
 A worker working in a store was not being supervised due to which the worker lifted more
weight than he should and fell down.
 There was no health and safety policy being implemented by the manager in the store which
led to the workers preference and ignoring the policies.
 Due to no safety policy in the store, workers were lifting heavy weight to save time which led
to the accident.
