ASSIGNMENT - CHAPTER 3 – CURRENT ELECTRICITY

Q.1 How does the drift velocity of electrons in a metallic conductor vary with increase in
temperature? (Ans. decreases)

Q.2 Two different wires X and Y of same diameter but of different materials are joined
in series and connected across a battery. If the number density of electrons in X is twice
that of Y, find the ratio of drift velocity of electrons in the two wires.
(Ans: V dx/Vdy = ny/nx = ½)
Q.3 Two wires of equal length one of copper and the other of manganin have the same
resistance. Which wire is thicker? ( Ans: Manganin)

Q.4 The V-I graph of two resistors in their series combination is shown. Which one of
these graphs shows the series combinations of the other two? Give reason for your
answer.

I (Ans: 1)
V

Q.5 Two wires of the same material having lengths in the ratio 1:2 and diameter 2:3 are
connected in series with an accumulator. Compute the ratio of p.d across the two wires
( Ans: VA/VB = 9/8)
Q.6 4 cells of identical emf E 1, internal resistance r are connected in series to a variable
resistor. The following graph shows the variation of terminal voltage of the combination
with the current output.
(i)What is the emf of each cell used?
(ii)For what current from the cells, does maximum power dissipation occur in the
circuit?
(iii)Calculate the internal resistance of each cell

Ans: (i) E = 1.4 V

(ii) For max power dissipation , I = 1A
(iii) Internal resistance, r= 0.7Ω

Q.7 Find the value of X and current drawn from the battery of emf 6V of negligible
internal resistance when no current flows through the 10 Ω resistor.
Ans: X = 6 Ω and I = 1A

Q.8 In a potentiometer circuit, a battery of negligible internal resistance is set up as shown

to develop a constant potential gradient along the wire AB. Two cells of emfs Ɛ 1 and Ɛ 2
are connected in series as shown in the combination (1) and (2). The balance points are
obtained respectively at 400cm and 240cm from the point A. Find (i) Ɛ 1/ Ɛ 2 and (ii)
balancing length for the cell Ɛ 1 only.

Ans : Ɛ 1/ Ɛ 2 = 4, l1 = 320cm

Q.9 A potentiometer wire of length 100cm having a resistance of 10Ω is connected in series
with a resistance and cell of emf 2V of negligible internal resistance. A source of emf of
10mV is balanced against a length of 40cm of potentiometer wire. What is the value of
the external resistance?
Ans: R = 790Ω

Q.10 In the potentiometer circuit shown, the balance point is at X.

State with reason where the balance point will be shifted when
(i)Resistance R is increased, keeping all parameters
unchanged.
(ii)Resistance S is increased keeping R constant.
(iii)Cell P is replaced by another cell whose emf is lower than that of that cell Q.
Ans: (i) X will shift towards B. (ii)No effect (iii) Balance point is not found.

Q.11 Two cells of emf 1.5V and 2 V and internal resistance 1 ohm and 2 ohm respectively
are connected in parallel so as to send current in the same direction through an external
resistance of 5 ohm. (i) Draw the circuit diagram (ii) Using Kirchoff’s laws, calculate (a)
current through each branch of the circui (b) p.d. across the 5 ohm resistance

Ans. Values of current in the different branches : 1/34 A, 9/34 A

and 10/34 A, p.d across 5 ohm = 25/17 V
