CHAPTER 1 - CREATE A NEW VIRTUAL MACHINE

This chapter outlines the system requirements and prerequisites necessary to run BackBox. It also provides
instructions for installing the system.

System Requirements
The following are the minimum hardware requirements:

• Intel CPU (dual core) At least 4 CPU Cores


• Disk space: 250GB (estimated for 6 months of backups)
• Memory: 4GB
• Network interface card (NIC)

Optional Parameters
• Static IP address
• DNS server IP address (and DNS suffix)
• IP address of SMTP server (and routing/SMTP access between the BackBox server and the SMTP server)
• Routes through firewalls to target devices and access service ports
• Browser: Chrome, Firefox or Edge.

VMWare Installation
This chapter provides instructions on how to install BackBox on a system running VMware.

1. Download the ISO file using the following link:


https://updates.backbox.com/V6/backbox-6.09.02.iso
2. Upload the file to the VMware repository
3. Open the VMware Web GUI.
4. Create / Register new VM

5. Select a name and guest OS


A. Enter the name of your choice for the virtual machine
B. Choose “Linux”
C. Choose “CentOS 6 (64 bit)”

6. On the Storage pane, select the data store that you want BackBox to reside.

7. Fill in the CPU, RAM and Hard disk fields. For more specific details, consult the BackBox Sizing document:

A. Choose number of CPU (Minimum is 4 Cores)
B. Choose Memory Size (Minimum is 4GB)
C. Enter Hard Disk size (Minimum is 100GB)

8. Custom Settings
A. CD/DVD Drive 1 - Choose “Datastore ISO file”
B. Click Browse and choose the ISO BackBox 6.09.02.ISO file

9. Click Finish and turn on the Virtual Machine

BackBox Installation Process
1. The Installation screen appears.

2. Press Enter. The Configure TCP/IP screen appears.

3. Specify the TCP/ IP settings and click OK. If you specify Manual configuration the following screen appears:

Note: If Dynamic configuration is selected then the VM will aquire an IP from the DHCP server, and the BackBox
Access screen appears.

4. After IP configuration completes, the BackBox Access screen appears:

CHAPTER 2 - RUNNING THE FIRST TIME WIZARD

To login to BackBox:
1. In your web browser, enter the IP address or host name assigned to the BackBox Server:

The Login screen is displayed:

2. Enter the default BackBox Username and Password.


Username: admin
Password: password

3. Once you agree to the EULA and click Next, choose the Installation Type:

4. This is where you choose between Management (main unit) or Agent (dependent unit). Agent units are only
able to accept commands from a Management unit, so be sure you already have a Management unit before
choosing Agent.

5. It is highly recommended to replace the default credentials
BackBox default Web GUI:
User: admin
Password: password
CentOS (Linux) default CLI:
User: root
Password: HayaldaB@gan1

6. Verify the BackBox IP matches to the IP address on the license file

Optional: Browse to your license file and import it. (A license can be imported at a later stage)

7. Set either a static date and time or configure your NTP server

8. Enter your SMTP information using an identifying email address such as backbox@companydomain.com

9. Configure your global retention or choose a retention policy. The default is 30 backups but can be modified
to fit the company policy.

10. Click Download to save the BackBox unique encryption key and store it in a safe place.

CHAPTER 3 - UPDATING BACKBOX TO THE LATEST BUILD

Post Installation Stage:


1. Download the BackBox latest build using the following link:
https://backbox.com/resources/product-downloads
** this is a compressed file but there is no need to extract it.
2. In the BackBox WebGUI, navigate to “Settings -> Administration -> Maintenance”
3. In the “Upgrade to new version”, click browse, locate the file that you downloaded from the BackBox website
4. Click “Upgrade”

5. Once the upgrade is complete, the BackBox service will restart and the login screeen will appear.
