Can Philosophy be employed to emancipate human beings from the circumstances that enslaved
them?

As Epicurus said “vain is the word of the philosopher that doesn’t heal any suffering of man.”

("The Place of Philosophy in Human Life - Daily Times", 2022). Philosophy in its actual

meaning is love for wisdom, now this can be taken into account on various levels such as

understanding the complexities of life itself or the purpose of living in a certain manner.

Breaking all th boundaries that maybe religion, society, upbringing, moral values and restrictive

living has taught us, philosophy lets us dive into the world of what ifs and broader actualization

of human understandings and then we could say that it can help human beings emancipate

themselves from the circumstances that enslaved them in a certain perception they hold of

themselves and the world they live in.

It does to a greater extend teach human beings to question their beliefs, assumptions and

practical implications of the code of life they follow. There is human freedom in philosophy as m

quoted “Because to be free not to be comfortable and extravagant is to recognize the infinite

difficulties of existence and does not exist the ready prescriptions for behavior.” (Billington,

1997:301).

The intrinsic, fundamental, and unalienable right to human freedom exists within the confines of

the information that each person possesses. Freedom can be defined as a state in which

individuals act morally and logically as per their own preferences and judgments. Selection is a

deliberate action that takes place in the context of a person's knowledge. Making a decision

involves taking preferences into account, which calls for formal reasoning. Making a decision

while taking into account others is the selection process. This involves putting oneself below
3

another. It is the distinction between one's own and other people's sentiments. This is not just to

consider and do it. Regardless of how the action turns out to be resultantly. Freedom consists of

3 main points:

1) Having no restraint on making desired choices

2) The absence of physical restrictions in the environment that might otherwise prohibit

someone from reaching their desired goals.

3) Having the tools or abilities necessary to accomplish the goal of one's own free will.

Leibniz a German philosopher makes a compelling case against the moral acceptability

of chattel slavery. 3 of the domains were discussed here. The first is the violation of

natural rights by slavery. The second is that moral rules, such as the ethics of equity and

piety, forbid slavery or at the very least severely restrict how slaves may be treated. The

third and last layer is that a slave can only be justified as a slave if she is permanently

unable to behave properly. However, it is quite unlikely that any real humans fit that

criteria. However, Aristotle claims that “slavery is good for those who are born natural

slaves”.

One of the common themes in slavery is determinism. Being determined is distinct from

being predictable for a system. There is a chance that determinism is accurate and that no

one can foretell the future. It makes no difference if there are future truths implied by the

conjunction of the past and the rules if no human agent knows or is able to know them.

The relationship between the determinism thesis and future predictability, however, is

less strong. An entity with thorough knowledge of P and L and enough intellectual

capacity should be able to accurately forecast how the future will pan out if determinism

is true. However, since we human beings lack both the necessary knowledge and the
4

ability to define a plausible cause we need some sort of school of thought, reasoning and

help in this way thus some of the restrictions faced as a result of consequential living and

making life be livable. As Plato also quotes “Reality is created by our mind, we can

change our reality by changing our mind.”
