2023-2024 Consumer Math Syllabus
Welcome back to TCCS for the 2023-2024 school year! I am looking forward to a year of fun and learning.
Parents/Guardians are encouraged to contact me regarding any concerns or questions regarding your child in my
class. You can reach me by email. I will do my best to respond as quickly as possible.
Course Description:
This Consumer Math course prepares students for making financial decisions with instruction about buying
a car, credit card charges, taxes, interest on loans and savings, personal banking, and costs of transportation, food,
clothing, utilities, insurance, filling out income tax forms, planning vacations, starting a small business, and more.
This course is recommended for all high school students. It can be taken after Algebra 2 for students who need a
fourth math credit. It can also be taken along with another math course as this course is not heavy in math problem
homework
Required Supplies:
Grading Policy:
TCCS has a percentage grading system for grades 2-12. Per the student handbook, the grading system for
the students at TCCS is as follows:
93 to 100 A 65 to 74 D
85 to 92 B 0 to 64 F
75 to 84 C Incomplete I
Quizzes/Tests:
Students will be given 10-20 minute quizzes after the completion of each section. Tests will be given after learning
3-4 sections, and will be announced at least one week before. Quizzes and tests will cover the concepts and skills
that are covered during class. To be successful, you should complete all assigned homework, participate in class, and
review these topics prior to the quizzes/tests. If you miss class when a quiz or test is announced, you will still be
responsible for taking the quiz/test with the class. Any quizzes/tests that students miss must be made up or it will
count as a zero. Please take my advice: the longer you wait to make quizzes and tests, the less you remember the
material. Please do not wait to make up for missing quizzes/tests.
Authentic Assessments:
There will be at least 1 authentic assessment during the school year (i.e. Project)
Class Work:
Whether it is individual work or group work, you are expected to actively work on these assignments. No late class
work will be accepted. Students will be awarded up to 3 participation points daily. Points will be deducted for
disruptive behavior, phone usage, or lack of participation/readiness. In the event that a student is absent, they can
receive their daily points by watching the lecture posted on the Google Classroom and submitting any in-class work
done that day.
Homework:
Homework will be assigned every day and will be due at the beginning of the next class. Homework is for you to
practice concepts and skills that you learned. A partially completed assignment will not receive full credit. If you
just show the answers to the problems, you will not receive any credit. Make sure you show all work. If your
homework is 1-day late, you will get 80%. If your homework is late more than 1-day but no later than 1 week, you
will get 50%.
Make up Policy:
It is your responsibility to make up all notes, assignments, tests and quizzes when you are absent. If you were absent
on a due date, all work is due the day you return; deadline for assignments given on the day you were absent will be
discussed. Missed assignments and handouts will be placed in the make-up folder. Missed quizzes and texts are to be
made up on your own time: during lunch or after school. Please see me to make the arrangements.
Other Policies:
Hall Pass/Bathroom:
Students should sign out and back in when leaving the classroom. If the student is abusing the privilege to use the
hall pass, the privilege will be lost.
Electronics:
School rules apply for electronic devices. When entering the classroom, phones are to be turned off and placed out
of sight. If students are to violate this policy, I will confiscate the phone and have it taken to the office. If it
continues to be an issue, I will collect ALL student’s phones when they enter the room. There will be zero tolerance
when it comes to use of electronic devices during class, except in the case of an emergency (the student must meet
with me to discuss the situation).
Calculators:
Calculators have been preassigned to each student. On the first day of class, they will receive a calculator contract.
In order to receive their calculator, they must return their form signed by a parent/guardian. I will be performing
quarterly calculator checks. In order to receive credit, the student MUST have their assigned calculator. These will
be worth 25 pts. each.
Extra help:
I will be available daily to answer any questions you may have. Please email me to schedule virtual office hours.
