ABSTRACT

MALON, AL-FATAH M. 2023. Side stand detector for manual transmission

motorcycle development and evaluation. BSEcE Thesis. College of
Engineering and Information Technology, University of Southern
Mindanao, Kabacan, Cotabato.

Adviser: Engr. Geraldo P. Ulep

The device is developed using readily available and affordable

materials including a limit switch, buzzer, jumper wire, and LED. This cost-

effective and straightforward combination of components proves to be highly

effective in preventing accidents caused by riders forgetting to retract the side

stand while riding a motorcycle. By utilizing the limit switch to detect the

position of the side stand, the device triggers the buzzer and LED to alert the

rider, ensuring they are aware of the potential danger. The simplicity and

practicality of this device make it an ideal solution for enhancing motorcycle

safety while remaining easy to develop and implement.

Keywords: side stand detector, motorcycle safety, manual transmission,

limit switch, buzzer, LED, accident prevention, rider awareness.

INTRODUCTION

The Philippines is well-known for its poor traffic and frequent

roadblocks. When time is of the essence, individuals prefer riding motorbikes

to other modes of public transit in order to arrive at their destinations on time.

Motorcycles may help you get around traffic by zigzagging around gridlocked

vehicle and, perhaps more importantly, make your commute to work simpler.

Nowadays, the two-wheeler has become an essential mode of transportation.

Although two-wheelers are simple to use, they can also cause an accident

(Reyes, E. 2021).

One of the most common issues experienced when using the side stand

is irresponsibility or carelessness in kicking back the side stand. The

irresponsibility may be due to absence of mind, urgency, divergence in

concentration, and a few other rears position released position." Failing to kick

back the side stand for any of the mentioned reasons above may hit result to

an accident of the vehicle and motorists involved in the accident, sometimes

fatal. To ensure safety of the rider, during absence of mind, negligence,

urgency or Carelessness (Joy, C. 2014).

To avoid this problem, the researcher came up with the study and

create a motorcycle side stand detector for manual transmission.

The general objective of this study is to design and develop a side stand

detector for Motorcycle with manual transmission specifically, the study aims to
2

develop a device that detects if side stand of a motorcycle is lifted up or not ,

incorporate an alarm feature to the device that will give warning when the user

starts the motorcycle engine while the side stand is not lifted up properly and

to evaluate its functionality.

The device was designed and developed at Poblacion, Matalam,

Cotabato, from April 2023 to May 2021. The study was evaluated at Poblacion,

Matalam, Cotabato.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presents the related literature and studies after the

thorough experimentation and in-depth search done by the researchers as well

as the conclusionary statement. The chapter highlights the motorcycle side

stand detector, functionality and studies.

History of Side Stand

The side stand, also known as a kickstand, is an essential component

of motorcycles that provides stability and convenience when parking or

stopping the vehicle. The concept of the side stand dates back to the early

days of motorcycles, evolving alongside the development of two-wheeled

transportation.

According to Winiecki (1980), the earliest motorcycles in the late 19th

century did not have a dedicated side stand. Instead, riders relied on various

makeshift supports or simply leaned their motorcycles against a wall or other

objects. However, as motorcycles became more popular and advanced, the

need for a reliable and integrated side stand became apparent.

The introduction of the side stand as a standard feature on motorcycles

is attributed to various manufacturers throughout history. For instance,

Kopernik (2015) mentions that Indian Motorcycle Company, one of the oldest

motorcycle manufacturers, incorporated a side stand into their models as early

6

as the 1910s. Other manufacturers, such as Harley-Davidson, Triumph, and

BMW, followed suit and began equipping their motorcycles with side stands.

The use of side stands in motorcycles is a common method for

supporting parked bikes. However, accidents can occur when riders forget to

retract the side stand before riding (Kopernik, 2015; Reyes, 2021). This

negligence can lead to injuries or even fatalities, emphasizing the need for

improved safety measures (Nurhanif et al., 2020). Unretracted side stands

have been identified as a major cause of accidents (Gulhane et al., 2017),

highlighting the importance of addressing this issue.

Research in recent years has focused on addressing human error-

related accidents caused by unlifted side stands on motorcycles (Jamian &

Sahat, 2020). One approach to mitigating this problem is the use of an

automatic side stand retraction system. This system employs various

mechanisms to ensure that the side stand is automatically retracted when the

motorcycle is in motion, reducing the risk of accidents (Dhameliya et al., 2019).

Technological advancements have also been explored in addressing

the side stand issue. For instance, the integration of a radar system and a side

stand retracting assembly can provide visual feedback to the rider,

compensating for the loss of peripheral vision and enhancing safety

(Rammohan, 2018). Additionally, the development of retractable side stands

can prevent accidents caused by unretracted stands (Dey et al., 2020).

Various design approaches have been proposed to improve the side

stand mechanism. These include the use of trigger mechanisms, gear

7

mechanisms, clutch mechanisms, and slider assemblies to automate the side

stand operation (Kumar & Reddy, 2016; Jichkar et al., 2020; Brahmankar et

al., 2022). These innovative designs aim to enhance convenience and safety

for motorcycle riders.

Furthermore, research has focused on the implementation of poka-

yoke mechanisms, which are error-proofing techniques, to reduce incidents of

unlifted side stands (Jamian & Sahat, 2020). These mechanisms introduce

foolproof features that make it difficult for riders to start the motorcycle without

retracting the side stand.

The importance of addressing the side stand issue is evident in the

global context, as motorcycles are widely used in many countries (Singh et al.,

2018). Accidents resulting from the failure to retract side stands have been

reported in various regions, necessitating the development of safety measures

(Natrayan et al., 2016; Singh et al., 2019).

In conclusion, the use of motorcycle side stands presents a potential

safety hazard when riders fail to retract them before riding. To address this

issue, researchers have explored various approaches, including automatic

retraction systems, technological advancements, innovative designs, and

poka-yoke mechanisms. These efforts aim to enhance the safety and

convenience of motorcycle riders, reducing the risk of accidents associated

with unretracted side stands.

SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

In this study, a motorcycle side stand detector for manual transmission

motorcycles was designed and developed. The device incorporated a limit

switch to detect the position of the side stand, and an alarm system comprising

a buzzer and LED was implemented to provide a warning when the motorcycle

engine was started while the side stand was not properly lifted. The study

aimed to address the issue of accidents caused by riders forgetting to retract

the side stand.

Based on the development and evaluation of the motorcycle side stand

detector, the following conclusions were drawn: The device successfully

detected the position of the side stand, providing a reliable indication of

whether it was lifted or not, the alarm system effectively alerted the rider when

attempting to start the motorcycle engine with the side stand not properly lifted,

contributing to enhanced safety and accident prevention and the device's

design and implementation were cost-effective and practical, utilizing

commonly available materials and components.

Conduct Further Performance Testing: Future researchers should

conduct more extensive performance testing of the motorcycle side stand

detector under various real-world conditions. This can include testing the

device on different motorcycle models, evaluating its performance in different

weather conditions, and assessing its durability and reliability over an

extended period of use. This will provide more comprehensive data on the
17

device's effectiveness and help identify any potential limitations or areas for

improvement.
