From The Code of Ethics - Inspirational Message To Teachers
Yesterday, I was asked by a relative of mine. She said, “Ate, lisud ng magteacher?” And I was hesitant
to answer her. Simply because, I haven’t figure out what to say to her. Lisud ba? Kamo kuno be… I
don’t want to answer her “lisud” because she is dreamy… di ko gustog mapawong ijang pangandoy.
But I also would not want to answer her “sayon” kay lisud man jud bitaw sa tinuod lang. And ladies
and gentlemen, my silly answer was, “Ang among trabaho dae kay dili init. Landong ra.” But she was
not satisfied. I can see the looks on her face. And so I added, “Indae, walay trabaho nga sayon.” And I
gained her sweet smile as she understands nga lisud jud deay.
Being a teacher is tough and challenging you know that. I’m not referring to teaching itself or paper
works, kamao nata ana…and it’s not lisud anymore… What makes our job extra difficult is that our
ethical standards are higher than any other human being. The world is expecting us to look dignified,
to appear intelligent, to be enthusiastic, to be perfect in short. These are difficult. Especially the times
when you feel an outburst and simply need to be human, to be evil. But we can’t because we are
teachers.
Our core as teachers, is tested every single day. For instance, a political ad on social media tempted us
to comment. But we can’t, simply because we are teachers, so long with many other situations where
we are suppressed. Freedom is limited, in thoughts, in words and actions, because we are TEACHERS.
A friend of ours from Thailand, Mam Bashie, told us that teachers are the second in rank respected
and holy next to the monks. That is why this morning, my dear teachers, let me take you back to our
core values as professionals and I believe that nothing could be more significant than the Code of
ethics for Professional Teachers.
Accordingly, teachers are professionals who possess dignity and reputation with high moral values and
professional competence in the practice of their noble profession.
We teachers, shall possess and actualize a full commitment and devotion to duty.
We shall not engage in the promotion of any political, religious, or other partisan interest nor use our
position or influence to coerce other person to follow any political course of action.
We shall render the best service by providing an environment conducive to such learning and growth.
We shall behave with honor and dignity at all times and refrain for such activities as gambling,
smoking, drunkenness, much less illicit relations.
We are intellectual leaders in the community, and we shall welcome the opportunity to provide such
leadership, to extend counseling services, and to be involved in matters affecting the welfare of the
people.
We shall maintain harmonious and pleasant relations with other professionals and with the people.
We shall actively insure that teaching is the noblest profession, and shall manifest genuine enthusiasm
and pride in teaching as a noble calling.
We shall uphold the highest standards of quality education, and shall be at our best at all times in the
practice of our profession.
THOUGHT OF THE WEEK…11-22-2021
We shall be imbued with the spirit of professional loyalty, mutual confidence, and faith in one another,
self-sacrifice for the common good, and full cooperation with colleagues and shall support one
another.
We shall recognize that the interest and welfare of learners are of our first and foremost concerns.
We shall establish and maintain cordial relations with parents, and shall conduct ourselves to merit
their confidence and respect. We shall hear parent’s complaints with sympathy and understanding,
and shall discourage unfair criticism.
We shall maintain a good reputation with respect to the financial matters such as in the settlement of
our debts and loans in our private financial affairs.
A teacher is, above all, a human being endowed with life for which it is the highest obligation to live
with dignity at all times whether in school, at home, or elsewhere.
We shall place self-discipline as the primary principles of personal behavior in all relationships with
others and in all situations.
We shall maintain a dignified personality which could serve as a model worthy of emulation by
learners and peers.
A teacher shall always recognize the Almighty God as guide of his own destiny and of the destinies of
men and nations.
My dear colleagues, I’m not giving this today to discourage you or add more yokes on our shoulders.
I’m sharing this to remind us that we have the luckiest job in the world. The noblest job of all. We
eradicate ignorance, we inspire, we help someone reach their dreams, and we are trustees of nation
building.
Despite all of these hardships, financial struggle, criticisms, and many other downgrading comments
about us, we must go back to our core. We must remind ourselves that we matter. We have the
world’s noblest profession, after all, we have the greatest role model of all times, Jesus Christ. He is
the greatest teacher of all. And it’s not by chance that we become teachers ourselves, it is the will of
God.
Upholding to this ethical standards, my dear teachers, we must stand tall, be proud, and confidently
say to ourselves these four valuable words- I AM A TEACHER. Say, “I AM A TEACHER.”
