Giraffe™ OmniBed™, Giraffe™ Carestation™ and
Incubator (Closed Bed) Installation Instructions

Description
The Giraffe/Panda™ Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) provides uninterrupted power source to the
Giraffe OmniBed, Incubator, OmniBed Carestation™, and Incubator Carestation devices. Refer to the tables
on page 12 for battery life determination.
Important:
• Install the UPS on GE devices according to the instructions in this addendum. It is acceptable for
some UPS vents to be blocked when the UPS is installed according to instructions.
• The battery replacement instructions in the Powervar Manual do apply to medical devices.
However:
– Powervar does not recommend replacing the battery when is it in use.
– Only qualified GE service personnel can replace the batteries on medical devices.

Installing the Shelf Kit on a Giraffe OmniBed and OmniBed Carestation

Note: Instructions for installing the UPS on the OmniBed continue in “Installing the UPS on a Giraffe
OmniBed or Incubator” on page 8.
1. Attach the shelf to the legs of the Giraffe OmniBed. Place the shelf on the legs so that it is approximately
one inch from the bottom shroud of the Giraffe pedestal. This will allow the appropriate room for the
power cord. See Figure 1.

FIGURE 1. Attaching Shelf to OmniBed Legs

2. Remove the M12 screw used to hold the canopy pedal from the Giraffe leg and discard it.
3. Unscrew the cover plate under the legs from the side where the canopy pedals are located.

FIGURE 10. Connecting OmniBed or Incubator to UPS and Wall Outlet

Important: GE Healthcare does not recommend connecting any other devices to the UPS.
— Connecting other devices to the AC outlets will reduce battery run time.
— The shields of the USB and RS-232 ports are not isolated. If medical devices are connected
to the USB and RS-232 ports, evaluate the electrical safety of the devices attached to
determine whether no hazard exists in normal and single-fault conditions.
8. Turn on the UPS and charge for a minimum of six hours. The installation is now complete.
For more details about the operation of the UPS or troubleshooting, refer to the Powervar Manual
(Security II Series Uninterruptible Power Manager).

2. Wrap the excess cord around the Giraffe cord wrap.
3. The Giraffe power inlet is located above the elevating column of the product. To ensure adequate slack
in the power cord between the UPS and the Giraffe product, fully lower and elevate the Giraffe after
installation of the UPS is completed in order to check that cord length is sufficient. A taut cord will
become damaged or unplugged as the elevating base is raised or lowered.

Battery Life
On average, there are 200 recharge cycles when the UPS is used under the conditions specified in the
preceding tables. Use of the UPS for periods of time longer than those stated in the tables may cause the
battery life to be lower than 200 recharge cycles.
Important:
• For optimal battery life, charge the batteries for 6 hours to achieve 80% capacity, 24 hours to
achieve a full charge.
• Frequent incomplete charge cycles may reduce battery life.

Operation Guidelines

Use Environment
The Giraffe™/Panda™ UPS is for intra-hospital (within the hospital) transport only.

The UPS is not intended for use outside of the hospital building or in an area where fluctuation in
temperature, exposure to water, or other hazards may occur.

Turning the System On and Off

Turn on the UPS when turning on the Giraffe or Panda product.

Turn off the UPS when:

• Turning off the Giraffe or Panda product
• Cleaning the Giraffe or Panda product

Cleaning
Refer to the microenvironment manual for the list of cleaning solutions, warnings, and cautions while
cleaning.
1. Apply the cleaning solutions with a clean cloth or sponge.
2. Dry the parts with a clean, damp, soft cloth to avoid scratches.

Restraints

Using the Patient Restraint (Part Number M1169540)

Perform the following steps when securing a patient before transport.

1. Lower the side wall of the bed, lower the other side wall of the bed, and pull out the x-ray tray if present
(Figure 19 on page 22).
Note: Activate the air curtain boost on the bed to help maintain patient thermal stability.
