Introduction – About ArcGIS

• This course is based on the use of ArcGIS software.

• ArcGIS is a product of ESRI (Environmental Systems

Research Institute), a US based company.

• The line of products is numerous depending on the

functionalities and applications you are interested in.
If you need all functionalities of the software, you
need the highest licesnse called “ArcInfo”. Two other
levels offered in ArcGIS are ArcView and ArcEditor

• But, all ArcGIS products share 3 common applications

interest for this training: ArcMap, ArcCatalog and
ArcToolbox.
• ArcMap is the primary display application, used to
edit, analyze and visualize data.

1
• ArcCatalog can be compare to the “Windows
Explorer” for spatial data management. It is used
to browse and preview geographic data, store
metadata and change the data structure.

• ArcGIS comes with its own data format, called

Geodatabase, but can work with many other data
formats.

• ArcToolbox: Geographic processing functions

– Data management, analysis, and conversion
– Tools vary between ArcGIS products

More Functionality

ArcGIS Desktop
• The ArcGIS Desktop includes a set of integrated
applications: ArcMap, ArcCatalog, and ArcToolbox
and Geoprocessor interfaces. Using these applications
together, you can perform any GIS task, simple to
advanced, including mapping, data management,
geographic analysis, data editing, and geoprocessing.

• In addition, ArcGIS allows you to tap into an

abundance of spatial data and resources available
through ArcIMS services on the Internet or stored in
an ArcSDE® database.

• The ArcGIS Desktop is a comprehensive, integrated,

scalable system designed to meet the needs of a wide
range of GIS users.

ArcGIS Desktop
• The ArcGIS Desktop can be
accessed using three software
products, each providing a higher
level of functionality.
• ArcView provides comprehensive
mapping and analysis tools along
with simple editing and
geoprocessing tools
• ArcEditor includes the full
functionality of ArcView, plus
advanced editing capabilities.
• ArcInfo extends the functionality
of both to include advanced
geoprocessing and also includes
the applications for ArcInfo
Workstation (Arc, ARCPLOT™,
ARCEDIT™, and so on).

ArcGIS Desktop

– Because the ArcGIS products all share a common

architecture, users working with any of these
clients can share their work with other users.
Maps, data, symbology, map layers, custom
tools and interfaces, reports, metadata, and so
on, can be accessed interchangeably in all three
products.

product line can be found at
