Arts Appreciation
Nature and Assumptions of Arts
At the end of the session students will be
able to:

1.Define art and an aesthetic

experience
2.Differentiate what is art and
not
3.Characterize universality of art
( art as expression and
communication, art as a
creation, art as source of
experience,)
4. Articulate arts appreciation
Let’s have a review

Where can you

find art?
Why is art found
in Human
society?
Is nature Art?
What is art?
Let us explore our
answers and
understanding..
We appreciate your
opinion but there are
appropriate answers..
Where can you find art?
Everywhere.
NATURE? HUMAN?
Everywhere?
The typical or common
answer..
Some maybe , CULTURE?
some are not..

MMA? Gestures/ Tools?

Cooking?
Actions?

Carpentry? Artwork? Transport? Structures?

We have to determine our answers.

Art is NOT EVERYWHERE
This is just an exaggeration…
But somewhere Somehow
specific produced by
human

In a form of It can be visual,

directly auditory or
functional art performing
and indirectly arts/combined
functional art arts
Why is art
found in Human
society?

• Because. We are the ones who can discern what

is art and not;
• the most intelligent creature in the world who
can fashion a tool out of a stone..
• We are the creature that can create and find
meaning in our activity.
• We create symbols/images/sound/movement/
shot and narratives/ language
Is Nature Art?

Yes or NO

Nature has no
human
intervention…
Jun Cayas ( Lubi) a sculpture by
Jong Tangiday and seascape photo by
noi narciso
Is Nature Art?

Dwarfing or bonsai is
an attempt in
manipulating the
growth;
the craftmanship or
skill entails art.

No, Why?
A Bonsai (Ficus) by Boy Buenaventura
For example: a Typical Beach resort is no longer natural
because we converted it into a landscape favorable to us.

We took away sea grasses, corals, stones and

are re-arrange it…it is called now landscaping…
Nature is not Art
Because what you see or
what you felt are aesthetic
experience you had with
nature.
Beauty in nature and in
art , are felt through the
senses.
The wonderful feeling you
had with nature.

Such as Sunrise. Sunset. Waterfalls. Flowing river.

Scent of a morning dew. Majestic Mountain.
Beachline. Trees and flowers..Moon..a puppy..
Nature is not Art.
Though, Sometimes people even associate
Life as Art..
• If you are stabbed in real life, what
will be your reaction?
• Hence, when you are stabbed in
theatre you don’t end up lying and
dying. But you stand and look at
the audience.., position self in a
good spot in stage, then you sung,
“wala ng buhay , wala ng bukas
hindi ko na makita abng bukang
liwayway,” then the actor dance.

Art are
representations
When we are
watching a
movie we feel
fear, we
scream,
frightened, but
we are still
eating popcorn

So, What is
art?
perspective

Middle ground
Is human expression art? It is but
not entirely an art.. Art are foreground

representations.
Subject
• Natural environment can be
trimmed down into planes..
• Yet, concepts of elements and
principles of design are found in
nature;
• We can see line, color, texture in
nature..
• We can see balance, proportion,..
Try to close you eyes for a moment.. Listen to…our
human environment or nature. It has its own
manifestation of rhythm… breeze, rustling leaves,
human voice, birds chirping..

So, both nature and human environment contributes

to images, sound, metaphor..
So, What is Art?
- Art comes from the Latin term “ars”- which means skill or
ability or Greek term “techne” which means craftmanship
- Koreans it is Yesul, Sine for Indonesia, Sining for Filipinos;
Alampat in Kabisayaan;

Art in an artworld
refers to
object/artifact/
conceptual art/ all
forms of art, visual,
auditory, and
performing arts.

It can be heard, seen, felt,

taste, touch, imagine..
Teatro humanidades ANI 2015 ADDU Davao.
Art attempts to
provide an
image of the self

environment

and
the world.

Art Perception and

Appropriation. Erestain et.al
1975.
What is the
nature of
art?
As a form of
communication
To express..
release..influence…
educate…
transform..escape
Indirectly Functional that transmitted through senses

Directly Functional
- it undergoes process/
Artists undergoes stages
of experiences;
Art is a form/a
creation/
it is a planned
1. subject – the activity
artists want to
explore
What is your
2. act of process in
exploration- the artmaking?
artists meets
medium/
manipulation

3. when the work is

done/exhibition
Art is a result of medium
manipulation or
transformation

Clay + sand + heat

plus water +
sculpting + fire
= terra cotta

Art is dependent in nature ( Material)

We fashion tools/things from nature
Thus, Art is a manifestation of beauty
It is so hard to measure beauty in a person..
Because of multi-cultural perspective..

But artform manifests order, ratio, balance,

proportion, harmony…rhythm and movement..
• Its purpose attracts , influences ,inspires and
transforms

Yet, if art is seen in this
perspective , we will
look at art objectively
:

The concept of beauty

vary between culture

The concept of beauty

changes as time passes

The artists concept of

beauty changes as he/she
grows older.
Aristocrat dares

• The concept of

Art works

Artworks should be
evaluated not just
by elements and
by principles of
design but also
narratives,
function,relevance
etc.

While, a functional tool is evaluated on “ functionality” or

purpose.. “ form follows function”.
On the otherhand, then. The nature
of art can also be described as
Assumptions of art
1. Art is universal
2. Art is not nature
3. Art involves
experience

Rapanui, Venus

Bulul , A fertility
sculpture
Assumptions of Art
1. Art is universal
Art is ageless, timeless and Boundless

Last Supper as subject

Popularity is one determinant that the work has a wide range
of scope
Such as Freddie Aguilars' Anak- more than 20 languages
translation.
The Lord’s Prayer, happy birthday, Reggae, etc.

Portrait

Still now, portrait still a

loved subject
• Art is ageless because we still
celebrate mass, festivities with the
same old song , prayer and ritual.
Songs still echoes within the new wall
for the new civilization.
• We still love to listen classical music.
• We still see clothes design
approximated from old
• We still see [patterns in between
rhythm of Indian raga into
contemporary Music
• Spanish, Korean Teleserye themes
have the same emotional impact to us
• African-American beats influences our
rap
• Hip-hop cultures.. graffiti..

“What Nature
cannot finish,
art can”
Albert Camus
Art involves
experience

Art demands involvement

The only way to experience art is to
engage oneself. You have no right to
disregard one artwork not unless you’ve
seen it, read it, tasted
The Contribution of the
senses to learning
Sight = 75
Hearing – 13
Touch – 6
Taste 3
Smell 3

“ The Humans are intensely visual animals. The eyes contain nearly 70
percent of the body’s receptors and send millions of signals along the optic
nerves to the visual processing centers of the brain… We take information
visually then through any of other sense. ( Wolfe, 2011)”
Pg 53 Philip T . Torres, Learning Excellence, Training Sytem Associates, inc. 1994 p 9)
So,
Art is good
because it is
popular ? or
art is good
because it is
universal?
