1. GENERAL INTRODUCTION
1.1. Description
The Motwane make Transformer Turns Ratio Meter (XTRM-3) is microcontroller based turns ratio meter with
automatic vector group detection. It measures turns ratio, excitation current & according to the configuration fed it
detects vector group. Unlike conventional ratio meters, it uses single phase supply to measure ratio of three phase
transformers. The XTRM-3 features a large; clear easy to read graphic LCD, displaying turns ratio, excitation current,
vector group & % deviation of ratio from actual.

1.2. Features
 Fully automatic, no manual balancing required.
 Testing single phase and three phase transformers.
 Automatic measurement of transformer ratio.
 Automatic calculation of % deviation error.
 Isolates test voltage automatically after testing.
 Test results are saved manually, enabling user to save desired test results.
 In built printer to print test results.
 Set parameters using manually & PC software also store the results on both manually as well as PC software.
 Storing results manually in instrument max. 500 reports. (250 each for single & three phase).

1.3. Applicable Standards

 Safety in accordance with EN 61010-1
 EMC in accordance with EN 61326-1
 CE Certified

4.2.2 CURRENT TRANSFORMER TESTING:

Current Transformers are, in effect, opposite wound voltage transformers.this basically means that the largest
number of windings are on the “X” low current side of the current transformer.
XTRM-3A applies a voltage (from 10 to 100VAC) from the “H” leads and measures back through the “X” leads. The X
leads always must have a lower voltage than the “H” leads or an error will be displayed . therefore, when testing
current transformers the “H” test leads are connected to the “X” terminal of the current transformer.
NOTE: For CT testing “H” leads are connected to the “X” terminal of the current trasformer
Connect the test leads as shown. During Current Transformer Testing XTRM-3A automatically selects 40volt or 10volt.
CT is selected for Current Transformers exclusively. This test set has a special Voltage /Current function built-in for
Current Transformers. If an error is still present repeat the test .

4.2.3 ON LOAD TAP CHANGER (OLTC):
Testing a Tapped Transformer using the External Tap Changer Control Switch

When testing large transformers with tap changers, it can be sometime difficult to place the instrument where
it can conveniently operated, at the same time as the tap changer system. Here we provide to supply an optional
control switch for tap changing, which connects to the instrument at the socket (OLTC) on the front panel.
After setting all test parameter, the test from selected tap is initiated in normal way after parameter
confirmation screen (Fig 20.) by pressing ‘Enter’ key from the front panel or by pressing the control switch. When the
test is live the lamp in the tap changer control switch will illuminate. After completing test the light will turn off and
the user can then go to the tap changer controls and set the next tap. After the tap is set the user can press the control
switch to perform the test. The lamp in the control switch will glow again while the test is live. Once the test is
finished, the lamp will turn off again. Repeat the same process till the last tap.
After pressing control switch, If the lamp does not illuminate then it indicates that the instrument is busy or there is a
fault/error.
