GENERAL ABILITIES
(30 Marks)

46. Which of the following ways is not a correct method of writing 95 +

95 + 95?
(A) 95 x 3 (B) (90 x 3) + (5 x 3)
(C) (100 x 3) - (5 x 3) (D) 90 + 5 x 3
SOLUTION
95 + 95 + 95 = 285. Choice A, B and C are written to also equal 285.
Choice D, however, does not equal 285. Following the order of
operations (Parentheses, exponents, multiplication + division, addition
+ subtraction), multiplication comes before addition when solving a
problem. 90 + 5 x 3 is really equal to 90 + 15, which equals 105. D is
not a correct method of writing 95 + 95 + 95.

47. What decimal of an hour is a second?

(A) 0.0025 (B) 0.0256
(C) 0.00027 (D) 0.000126
SOLUTION
1 1
Required decimal = = = 0.00027
60 X 60 3600

48. When 0.232323..... is converted into a fraction, then the result is:
(A) 1/5 (B) 2/9
(C) 23/100 (D) 23/99

49. 3889 + 12.952 - ? = 3854.002

(A) 47.095 (B) 47.752
(C) 47.932 (D) 47.950

SOLUTION
Let 3889 + 12.952 - x = 3854.002.
Then x = (3889 + 12.952) - 3854.002 = 3901.952 - 3854.002
= 47.950

50. A fruit seller had some apples. He sells 40% apples and still has
420 apples. Originally, he had:
(A) 588 apples (B) 600 apples
(C) 672 apples (D) 700 apples

SOLUTION
Suppose originally he had Y apples.
Then, (100 - 40)% of Y = 420
(60/100) x Y = 420
By cross multiplication:
Y = (420 x 100)/100 = 700

51. A student multiplied a number by 3/5 instead of 5/3. What is the

percentage error in the calculation?
(A) 54% (B) 64%
(C) 44% (D) 34%

SOLUTION
Let the number be Z
Then, error = (5/3)Z – (3/5)Z = (16/15)Z
Error% = [ (16/15Z) x (3/5Z) x 100 ]% = 64%

52. The L.C.M. of two numbers is 48. The numbers are in the ratio 2 : 3.
Then sum of the number is:
(A) 28 (B) 32
(C) 40 (D) 64
SOLUTION
Let the numbers be 2x and 3x
Then, their L.C.M. = 6x.
So, 6x = 48 or x = 8
The numbers are 16 and 24
Hence, required sum = (16 + 24) = 40

53. Find the highest common factor of 36 and 84.

(A) 4 (B) 6
(C) 12 (D) 18
SOLUTION
36 = 22 x 32
84 = 22 x 3 x 7
H.C.F. = 22 x 3 = 12

54. The average weight of A, B and C is 45 kg. If the average weight of

A and B be 40 kg and that of B and C be 43 kg, then the weight of B is:
(A) 17 KG (B) 20 KG
(C) 26 KG (D) 31 KG
SOLUTION
Let A, B, C represent their respective weights. Then, we have:
A + B + C = (45 x 3) = 135 .... (i)
A + B = (40 x 2) = 80 .... (ii)
B + C = (43 x 2) = 86 ....(iii)
Adding (ii) and (iii), we get: A + 2B + C = 166 .... (iv)
Subtracting (i) from (iv), we get : B = 31.
B's weight = 31 kg

55. The average age of husband, wife and their child 3 years ago was
27 years and that of wife and the child 5 years ago was 20 years. The
present age of the husband is:
(A) 40 (B) 35
(C) 50 (D) 45
SOLUTION
Sum of the present ages of husband, wife and child = [(27 x 3) + (3 x 3)]
years = 90 years.
Sum of the present ages of wife and child = [(20 x 2) + (5 x 2)] years =
50 years.
Husband's present age = (90 - 50) years = 40 years

be able to consume eggs if minimum allowed purchasing is 1 carton?
(A) 30 Days (B) 40 Days
(C) 50 Days (D) 60 Days
SOLUTION
No. of egg carton which can be purchased = Rs.2000 / Rs.350 = 5.71
cartons. Minimum allowed quantity is 1 carton, therefore, he can
purchase 5 cartons.
Hence number of days = 5 cartons x 10 = 50 days.

60. A sum of money at simple interest (SI) amounts to 815 in 3 years

and to 854 in 4 years. The principal amount is:
(A) 650 (B) 690
(C) 698 (D) 700
SOLUTION
SI for 1 year = (854 - 815) = 39.
SI for 3 years = (39 x 3) = 117.
Principal = (815 - 117) = 698

period, what was the rate of interest(%)?
(A) 3.6 (B) 6
(C) 18 (D) cannot be determined
SOLUTION
Let rate = R% and time = R years.
Then, (1200 x R x R)/100 = 432
12R² = 432,
R² = 36
R = 6%

marks. The marks obtained by them are:
(A) 39, 30 (B) 41, 32
(C) 42, 33 (D) 43, 34
SOLUTION
Let their marks be (x + 9) and x.
Then, x + 9 = 56/100(x + 9 + x)
25(x + 9) = 14(2x + 9)
3x = 99
x = 33
So, their marks are 42 and 33.
