1. Aircraft Stations
A. General
(1) This section defines and identifies station locations and lines used in locating reference
points of the major components of the aircraft.
(1) Horizontal Planes/Lines are references used for vertical fuselage dimensioning. The
basic horizontal plane may be located arbitarily in the center, below the fuselage or at any
selected plane dictated by the design. This plane and parallel planes above and below
are called Water Lines. Water lines are designated in decimal inches and are further
identified by plus and minus, depending on whether these lines are above or below the
basic horizontal plane. The basic horizontal plane runs thru the center of the constant
section and is defined as W.L. 100.00.
(2) Vertical Planes/Lines are references used for lateral or side-to-side dimensioning in the
fuselage. A vertical centerline is used as the basic vertical plane. Planes outboard and
parallel to this plane are called Buttock Lines which are dimensioned left or right in
decimal inches.
(3) Fuselage Stations are references used for fore and aft dimensioning in the fuselage. The
zero station may be arbitrarily located but is usually at or forward of the nose of the
airplane. Stations are dimensioned from the zero (0) station in decimal inches.
(1) Jig Reference Plane is used as a reference for all vertical dimensions above and below
it, on a wing having a varying angle of incidence (twist). It intersects the vertical centerline
plane of the fuselage at a specified distance above or below the horizontal
centerline of the fuselage and usually forms an angle known as the "dihedral angle" of
the wing. The line of intersection, of the jig reference plane with the vertical centerline
plane of the fuselage, is parallel to the horizontal centerline plane of the fuselage.
(2) Wing Station Plane "0" is used as reference for all span wise dimensions and is usually
located at the intersection of the wing reference plane and the vertical centerline plane
of the fuselage. All stations outboard of Station "0" are identified by a number which is
equal to the number of inches the station is distant from Station "0".

(1) Engine Horizontal Centerline Plane is positionally similar to the horizontal plane of the
fuselage and is usually referred to as a Nacelle W.L. This could be parallel to a fuselage
W.L. or at an angle to the fuselage W.L. From this, like the fuselage, lines above are plus
water lines – lines below, minus water lines.
(2) Engine Vertical Centerline Plane is positionally similar to the vertical centerline plane of
the fuselage and is usually located parallel to this vertical centerline (fuselage B.L.).
(3) Station Plane "0" is usually located at or forward of the leading edge of the Nacelle and
is used as a reference for all fore and aft dimensions. All stations aft of station "0" are
identified by a number which is equal to the number of inches the station is distant from
station "0".
(1) Chord Plane is a plane formed by the common chord lines of all airfoil sections of the
surface and is sometimes called Centerline Plane of the surface. For instance:
(a) In Rudder and Fin, a chord plane is used as reference for all lateral dimensions. It
coincides with the vertical centerline plane of the fuselage except in the case of an
offset fin.
(b) In Elevator and Stabilizer, the chord plane is used as reference for all vertical
dimensions. It may be inclined at an angle to the horizontal plane (dihedral angle),
and may be inclined fore and aft (angle of incidence).
