Greek Philosophers

Nancy: What a big book!


Peter: Yes, It’s about Greek philosophers.
Nancy: Is it difficult?
Peter: Well, a little bit… But I love philosophy!
Nancy: Who is your favourite philosopher?
Peter: Oh, that’s a difficult question. I love all the Gr eek philosophers, but I
think I prefer Plato.
Nancy: Plato?
Peter: Yes, Plato lived from 428 to 348 BC. Plato’s father descended from the
Kings of Athens. He studied philosophy with Socrates.
Nancy: Yes, I remember Socrates! I studied him at school!
Peter: Sure! And maybe you studied Plato, too!
Nancy: Yes, very probably. But I can’ t remember. I didn’t like philosophy very
much at school, I preferred science.

Task 1: Talk about these three Greek philosophers.

1. Socrates / live / Greece / 470 - 399 B.C.

2. Plato / study / philosophy / Socrates.

3. Plato / found / the Academy / Athens.

4. Aristotle / study / Plato.

5. Aristotle / live / 384 – 322 B.C.

Task 2: Ask your partner about his/her school days:

1. Did you study philosophy at school?

2. Did you enjoy it?

3. What school subjects did you like best?

4. Did you use your computer to do your homework?

5. Did you prefer maths to geography?

6. Did you copy everything from the board?

7. Did you work hard at school?

8. Did you visit any interesting place with your school?

Task 3: Report to the group. E.g.:

 Carina studied philosophy at school and she enjoyed it very much.

Task 1: Complete the pronunciation rule for regular verbs in the past tense.

 -ed: the letter “E” is usually ……………...

 Exception: when the infinitive form of the verb finishes in / / or / /. In

Task 2: Look at the list on page 76.

1) List all the verbs that duplicate their final consonant to form the past tense.

2) List all the verbs where the “ed” is pronounced /Id/.

3) List those verbs where the final “y” becomes “i”.

Task 3: What did you do last weekend? Use regular verbs in the affirmative or
negative forms.

Task 4: What did he do yesterday?

Mr Grey has a very rigid routine, and he never changes it! His life is just the same
every day.
