BIOLOGY 2
GAS EXCHANGE IN
ANIMALS AND
PLANTS
STUDY THESE TERMS
 EXTERNAL RESPIRATION – exchange of
gases between the atmosphere and the
lung.
INTERNAL RESPIRATION- gas exchange
between the blood and the cells of the
body
RESPIRATORY SYSTEM – is the network of
organs and tissues that help you breathe
GAS EXCHANGE
Itis the process of
absorbing inhaled
atmospheric oxygen
molecules into the
bloodstream and offloading
carbon dioxide from the
bloodstream into the
atmosphere
BREATHING
 An involuntary process that occurs simultaneously
with the circulation of the blood.
 Process of inhaling and exhaling air
HUMAN RESPIRATORY
SYSTEM
 The respiratory system is the
network of organs and tissues
that help you breathe .
 Itis a biological system consisting
of specific organs and structures
used for gas exchange in animals.
 An involuntary process that
occurs simultaneously with the
circulation of the blood.
TYPES OF GAS EXCHANGE
EXTERNAL RESPIRATION
 Involves both bringing air into the lungs (inhalation) and
releasing air to the atmosphere (exhalation)
 External respiration involves the following organs:
❑ NOSE

❑ BRONCHI

❑ LUNGS

❑ PHARYNX

❑ LARYNX

❑ TRACHEA
EXTERNAL
RESPIRATION
NOSE
Body’s primary organ of
smell and also functions
as part of the body’s
respiratory system
-Contains the
passageways for food
and air.

Helps the respiratory

system by allowing air
to make its way to the
respiratory tract.
- A hollow tube
that connects the
throat to the rest
of the respiratory
system. It helps
you swallow safely
and contains the
vocals cords.
TRACHEA
It is about 10 cm long
and 2.5 cm wide and is
lined with mucous
membranes and cilia.
This cilia moves mucus
any material in it
toward the throat
where the mucus is
coughed out.
BRONCHI
Each bronchus is
attached to the lungs
The inner lining of the
bronchi is lined with
the cilia and mucus
that help filter air
▪ Spongy, elastic
sac-like structures
suspended from
each side of the
heart, inside the
chest cavity.
Inside the lungs,
the bronchus
divides into
smaller branches.
The bronchial
tubes.

GAS EXCHANGE
IN PLANTS
GAS EXCHANGE IN PLANTS
 The process whereby water
vapor and oxygen leave and
carbon dioxide enters plant
leaves
 The gases move into and out of
the plants through specialized
openings located along the
lower surface of the leaf.
STOMATA
 Openings in the leaves of the plants flanked
by a pair of sausage-shaped called guard
cells
 Serves as an entry and exit points of gases in
plants.
 Serves as passageways for the transpiration
of water through the leaves during hot and
windy days.
 Turgor pressure in guard cells is responsible
for the opening and closing of the stomata It
is the pressure that water exerts on the cell
membrane, which pushes it towards the cell
wall
PNEUMATOPHORES
Some plants that
lives in
marshlands have
pneumatophores
that aid in gas
exchange
