Stranger Paper

Test subject “Lydia” is a student at Irvine High School. On August 31, 2023, she was

reading a novel while walking into class. Lydia sits with her right leg crossed over her left and

makes eye contact with the teacher during lectures. I noticed that she does not physically display

emotion to an extent and refrains from extensively discussing with her group mates. She fidgets

with her pen and ring, and occasionally writes in a separate notebook in between the current

lecture notes. This individual is well put together and alludes to a sense of maturity and

tranquility.

Based on these observations, I hypothesize that Lydia is a well mannered and serene

person. Lydia may have an interest in reading because of her absorption in her novel and her

involvement in the AP Psychology course, which requires an substantial amount of reading. She

might be considered a more timid individual because of her lack of involvement with her peers.

However, this can not be confirmed without considering a variety of factors, including the

members of her group, her mood on that particular day, etc. Her posture and physical presence in

class leads me to believe that she is mindful of her appearance. Additionally, I think she is detail

oriented because of her neat and pristine hairstyles.

On September 5, 2023, I noticed Lydia reading a book while walking during the passing

period. Similarly to the prior day of observation, she maintained eye contact with the teacher and

displayed attentiveness throughout the class period. Her body was shifted towards the lecture
screen and she continued her composed behavior. Lydia’s hairstyle was nearly identical as on

August 31 and her clothing style stayed the same. During the class, she responded to a question

regarding a double-blind procedure. Her tone stayed relatively monotone and in a casual manner.

From these findings, I can classify Lydia as a bookworm or bibliophile. It is apparent that

she has an extensive interest in reading as she is constantly and actively reading in her free time.

Additionally, I assume that she is a rather passive person with an easygoing personality. Lydia is

not seemingly outgoing or bubbly because of her lack of interaction with others. She appears to

be more reserved and docile from her etiquette in the classroom. Based on the fact that her style

is consistent at school, I can assume that she is routine oriented. However, this might be due to

the fact that she wants to sustain a level of comfort when learning for hours on end. Naturally,

these observations can not constitute or describe Lydia’s true personality, but gives some insight

on the possibilities of her real self. The way she chooses to act towards acquaintances versus

close friends can not be determined in this particular naturalistic observation, since the study is

only being performed during class. Many varying factors can affect the way Lydia acts, therefore

this examination is not a true representation or testament of her.

This research method allows researchers to observe subjects in their natural environment

without disrupting their everyday lives. It allows for the most authentic recordings because the

subjects are undisturbed and unaware that they are being watched. Naturalistic observations

allow for the most authentic and unbiased observations. The way these findings can be

interpreted will ultimately lead to somewhat biased analyses, however it is sufficient for minor

research studies. Despite that, researchers are not able to determine the cause or motivations

behind these behaviors. We do not have the ability to assess any outside factors or influences that

can affect these observations. As a result, the conclusions that are drawn from this data are
mostly baseless assumptions. The reason why people act the way they do is mostly because of

internal rationale and motives. Researchers can not simply monitor an individual by their

physical attributes and same assumptions about them without taking into account other

influences.
