1 Vasona Solution Overview
1.1 SmartAir™1000
The Vasona SmartAIR™1000 is an edge application controller, which monitors Radio Access Network
(RAN) performance at the cell level and takes immediate action during congestion to assure best
customer experiences. It alleviates the effects of congestion, reduces RAN latency, improves utilization,
and provides better browsing and streaming experiences without having to undertake expensive and
complex upgrades of raw capacity.
The SmartAIR analyses the traffic going over the RAN and builds a view of the RAN consisting of how
much bandwidth is being consumed per cell and per application-type in real-time. The SmartAIR
determines and maintains an accurate view of the cell condition, the UEs, and all the sessions in each
cell. If congestion is detected, it then performs Dynamic Rate Control with Feedback (DRCF) on a cell-by-
cell basis so that the aggregate bandwidth consumed by all application sessions utilizes capacity to its
fullest efficiency and best quality. DRCF Rules take into account factors such as the RAN state, the
number and type of sessions within the cell, the real-time requirements of the different applications
types, the complexity of content, the per-subscriber RAN Quality of Service (QoS) settings and more. In
this way, mobile network operators can maintain and / or improve the Quality of Experience (QoE) for
all sessions and maximize experiences for all users.
SmartAIR RAN modeling and DRCF actions result in more effective use of the available capacity by
allowing more application sessions to be setup over each cell without impacting, and in certain instances
improving, the QoE of each session. The benefit is to support increased demand while improving
subscribers’ QoE at the cell level.

1.1.1 SmartAIR Network Architecture

The SmartAIR is deployed between the RAN and the mobile network core enabling it to analyze the
control traffic, assess cell capacity, and enforce rules in real time. It is a transparent network element.
The RNC and the SGSN/GGSN are not aware of the presence of the SmartAIR. The following figure
shows the typical deployment of the SmartAIR between the RAN and the packet core in an HSPA
deployment.

Memoria Técnica Confidential 6

Figure 1: SmartAIR deploys between the RAN and the mobile network core

The SmartAIR supports the following RAN technologies:

 UMTS, HSPA+ and HSDPA

The SmartAIR supports the following 3GPP interfaces:

 IuPS, Iu-U

The SmartAIR is deployed with a built-in optical/copper bypass functionality. The bypass functionality is
integrated into the NICs on the SmartAIR. The bypass protects the network in case the SmartAIR
software fails, if there is a problem with the hardware or if there is a loss of power. In all cases, the
bypass function puts the SmartAIR in bypass and makes sure the RNC and the packet core (SGSN/GGSN)
can communicate with each other continually.
The SmartAIR can also work with an external bypass device.

2.4.2 CLI Privilege Levels

Each new user is assigned a privilege level by the administrator. The SmartAIR CLI supports three
privilege levels:

 Viewer: the basic privilege level that should be assigned to users who do not need to change or
provision any new parameters in the SmartAIR. It grants the user access to all ‘show’ commands.
 Operator: the intermediate level that grants access to both show and configuration commands,
with the exception of the ability to configure user data masking.
 Administrative: the advanced level that grants access to all show and configuration commands.
The administrative level also provides access to debugging (performed by Vasona).

Memoria Técnica Confidential 18

3 System Administration
The following sections describe CLI commands for basic system administration. For a complete list of CLI
commands, please refer to the SmartAIR User Guide.

3.1 Basic System Administration

3.1.1 Stopping Application
There is no need to stop the SmartAIR application. If there is a need to stop the SmartAIR from taking
action, it is best to put the system in bypass. The following CLI command is used to put the system into
bypass:
system bypass force-bypass

3.1.2 Starting Application

If the SmartAIR application is already running, check if the system is in bypass:
show system bypass status

If the system is in bypass, use the following CLI command to make it come out of bypass. Once it comes
out of bypass, the SmartAIR is inline for b
oth control and data plane.
system bypass release-bypass
To re-start the SmartAIR application use the following CLI command
system reload-vn-service

3.1.3 System rebooting

To restart the SmartAIR, including reboot of the machine, use the following CLI command.
system restart-machine

3.1.4 Backup system

Backup of the SmartAIR configuration is done automatically on the SmartVISION. Whenever the
configuration is saved on the SmartAIR with the following CLI command, a copy of the configuration is
immediately saved on the SmartVISION.
system running-config save

There is no other backup required. The SmartAIR OS and the application itself are not backed up. If a
SmartAIR ever needs to be restored from scratch, please install the Vasona OS image provided by

Memoria Técnica Confidential 19

Vasona. Once the OS image is installed, please install the SmartAIR RPM and restore the last saved
config file from the SmartVISION.

3.1.5 Maintenance routines

Besides monitoring via SmartVISION Element section, each SmartAIR appliance does not require any
specific software daily operations to be maintained. The following scripts run on SmartVISION and are
intended to provide a daily performance view of each SmartAIR and SmartVISION. Part of the daily
operations will be to log into the SmartVISION server and copy the results of the scripts to the
appropriate location in Telcel for an analyst to generate and distribute the correct reports (including
Vasona's SmartAIR) to a wider audience. In event of Telcel base station expansion or if any additional
Vasona license needs to be deployed, it is recommended that Telcel contact and coordinate directly with
Vasona Customer Support. Vasona Customer Support is available to assist Telcel for any software or
hardware troubleshooting incident, see section 4.1.

3.2 Performance Monitoring

The following CLI commands are used to check the performance of the system and for monitoring the
system.
show system performance cpu-usage
show system performance memory-usage
show system performance file-system-usage

In general, there is no need to log into the SmartAIR to monitor the system. The SmartVISION element
screen and the events list can be used to monitor each SmartAIR. Please refer to the SmartVISION User
Guide for more information.

3.3 System Monitoring

The following CLI commands are used to check the performance of the system and for monitoring the
system.

4.2 Licensing System

Licensing is administered from the SmartVISION. There is no specific configuration required for licenses
on the SmartAIR.
SmartVISION supports two types of perpetual (cell-specific) licenses. The licenses define the maximum
number of cells for which:
 Metrics are collected (Cell Metrics license)
 Dynamic Rate Control with Feedback (DRCF) is enabled (DRCF license)

4.2.1 Cell Metrics License

SmartAIR has the ability to gather a variety of metrics for cells, enabling operators to analyze the data
and reach conclusions.
The cells for which Cell Metrics are collected are determined either automatically – according to an
uploaded list of entitled cell prefixes - until the maximum quota is reached, or by uploading a list of
specific cell IDs to SmartVISION.
The Cell Metrics license also enables an administrator to designate specific cells so that data is collected
at fine resolution (every 5 seconds, instead of every 5 minutes). A maximum of 2000 cells may be
defined as high resolution cells in each SmartAIR. The total number of fine-resolution cells configured in
SmartVISION has an implication on the amount of required SmartVISION server storage.
Information on designating cells for fine resolution reporting is detailed further in the SmartVISION User
Guide.
Note: Fine resolution reporting is available for SmartAIRs running version 2.1 and up only.

Memoria Técnica Confidential 24

4.2.2 DRCF License
SmartAIR activates Dynamic Rate Control with Feedback (DRCF) to alleviate congestion in cells and
provide better QoE for subscribers. DRCF is active for a maximum number of cells, according to the
license purchased.

The cells for which DRCF is enabled are determined either automatically, until the maximum quota is
reached, or by uploading a list of cell IDs to SmartVISION, as described in the SmartVISION User Guide.
