Sound Attenuators
Recent work has resulted in a unique energy saving design of dissipative attenuators with an enhanced
acoustic performance aiflow frequencies, packaged within a shorter length and smaller cross-sections than
conventional attenuators generally in use at the present time.
In addtion, the acoustic performance is more uniformly spread over the acoustic spectrum enabling the
design engineer to match attenuator requirements more closely at all frequencies without costly excess of
attenuation at middle frequencies. A conscious effort has been made towards energy saving, and this has
been achieved by an improved aerodynamic entry configuration resulting in a lower pressure loss across the
attenuator.
Key Features
- Energy Saving
- Shorter Length
- Smaller cross-section
- Increased Low Frequency Attenuation
- More Uniform Attenuation over the
Acoustic Spectrum
- Modular Design for Size Flexibility

Introduction
Introduction
The ATAI/SAL range of cylindrical attenuators
has long been established for both industrial and
air conditioning applications. They have been de-
veloped with special concern for both “on-fan”
and “in-duct” situations. The success of this range
has enabled new methods of manufacture to be
implemented, which in turn permits a wider range
to be offered without cost penalties. This bro-
chure details the new range of attenuators which
match both imperial and metric fan ranges.
CYLINDRICAL ATTENUATORS
The Range
The CA (imperial range) and MCA (metric range)
are simple “straight through” attenuators supplied
in the wide range of sizes and flanged for direct
attachment to most axial flow fans; they are equally
suitable for centrifugal fan inlet connections. The
complementary CPA (imperial) and MCPA (met-
ric) ranges with concentric pod give high attenua-
tion potential. Both have been optimized from the
vast quantity of site and laboratory information avail-
able for “on-fan” applications.
The accompanying tables and chart illustrate Performance figures are given for the most The attenuator performance data has

Continuous Line
In modern buildings louvres are usually taken
into consideration early on in the building en-
velope design. This quite often means that con-
tinuous line louvre facings are called for. The
Sound Attenuators range can cope with virtu-
ally any such situation and offers the architect
the advantage of a wide variety of colour
finishes (see page eight). To specify continu-
ous line louvers, use conventional code and add
suffix ‘C’ Maximum nominal width for con-
tinuous line louvre section is 1500mm each.

Construction
The outer frame and leaf frame are fabricated from 1.6mm
thick galvanized mild steel sheet formed into multi-cell
box sections to obtain rigidly with slenderness in order
that the frames do not appear obtrusive in a multi-sec-

depth is made up to 300mm by a separate cartridge con-
taining the louvre blades, the sides of which are tapered
at 19 deg to provide clearance for the arc of swing. The
