Let Us Study

It’s evident that music is a powerful force in more ways than one, but how
has its influence changed the world of entertainment over the years? The Ancient
Greeks took their entertainment very seriously and used drama as a way of
investigating the world they lived in, and what it meant to be human.
A lot of performances we see today are mere products of the cultures that
have influenced the country through the years. In the Philippines, the musical play
is a more recent development than Broadway and West End, relying mostly on
adaptations from novels, literary works, or biographical sketches of famous artists.
Modern Western musical theatre came about in the 19th century. The structure of
a musical was established by Gilbert and Sullivan in Britain, Harrigan and Hart in
America.

MUSICAL PLAY

Musical play is a form of theatrical performance that combines songs,

spoken dialogue, acting, and dance. The story and emotions are portrayed through
music, words, movement, and technical aspects of the entertainment as an
integrated whole.
- It is entirely accompanied and sung-through
- Musicals also usually include more dancing as an essential part of the storytelling.

2
- Often use various genres of popular music or at least popular singing and musical
styles.
A plain play is a work of drama, usually consisting mostly of dialogue
between characters and intended for theatrical performance rather than just
reading. The writer of a play is a playwright. The companion term drama comes
from the Greek word dran, literally "to do" It is "something done." While musical
play has songs to help explain the story and move the ideas of the play along. They
are usually accompanied by dancing. Musicals can be very intricate in settings and
actor performances.
As the years progressed, Philippine theatre groups, have staged various
plays in both English and Filipino, be it written by a Western or nearby writer.
Spanish culture and customs to a great extent impact performing expressions in
the Philippines, however, the contemporary style is acquired from the Americans.
One Filipino artist who attained international status on both London’s West
End and Broadway is Lea Salonga. She is best known for her portrayal of Kim in
the musical Miss Saigon, a role for which she won the prestigious Tony Award for
theater in the USA and the Laurence Olivier Award in London. She also garnered
the Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for the same role in the USA.
Salonga is the first Filipina to have won various international awards for a single
role.
