Biotechnological advancements in floriculture have revolutionized the way we cultivate and

enhance ornamental plants. These innovations encompass various techniques, such as tissue
culture, genetic engineering, and marker-assisted breeding. These methods have led to the
development of new flower varieties with improved traits, such as longer vase life, vibrant colors,
and enhanced fragrance. Additionally, biotechnology has enabled the production of disease-
resistant plants, reducing the need for chemical pesticides. These advancements not only contribute
to the aesthetic appeal of flowers but also promote sustainability and economic growth within the
floriculture industry ( by A Noman et al 2017 ).
In the realm of floriculture, biotechnological advancements have brought about transformative
changes. Tissue culture techniques, for instance, allow for the rapid propagation of plants from a
small piece of tissue, enabling mass production of uniform and disease-free plants. Genetic
engineering plays a pivotal role in developing flowers with novel traits, like altered colors or
modified petal shapes, catering to evolving consumer preferences. Biotechnology offers new
opportunities for breeders to the development of new ornamental varieties through gene transfer.
Genetic engineering can introduce traits not be generated by conventional breeding. Now a day’s
gene silencing techniques like RNAi, CRES-T, miRNA are being used to manipulate the
floricultural traits but, very small number of varieties has been developed for commercial use by
genetic transformation. Moon series of transgenic carnations and transgenic blue roses were
recently developed by genetic engineering and these are commercialized in North America,
Australia and Japan. In petunia senescence is delayed by incorporation of etr1-1 gene and ethylene
regulation. The biotechnological manipulation of floral scent can be achieved by isolation of scent
biosynthetic genes (by RK Bolagam 2022).
Marker-assisted breeding, a sophisticated approach, accelerates the traditional breeding process by
identifying desirable traits at the molecular level. This results in quicker development of flower
varieties that exhibit resistance to diseases, adaptability to different climates, and longer shelf life.
Moreover, genetic modification can confer traits like drought tolerance, which contributes to the
sustainability of floral cultivation (by RK Bolagam 2022).
Biotechnology not only optimizes the ornamental qualities of flowers but also addresses ecological
concerns. Reduced reliance on chemical pesticides due to disease-resistant cultivars enhances
environmental health. Additionally, the precision of biotechnological methods minimizes resource
wastage, making floriculture more resource-efficient.
In conclusion, the biotechnological strides in floriculture have ushered in an era of innovation and
sustainability, transforming the way we perceive, produce, and enjoy ornamental plants. These
advancements not only elevate the visual appeal of flowers but also forge a path toward a more
environmentally conscious and economically viable industry ( by Miri, S.M. and Roughani, A.
2018).
